Nigeria as a Country in AFCON.
African Cup of Nations (AFCON), started in the year 1957 and it was hosted by Sudan.
Since that time, it has been hosted 34 times and Nigeria has only hosted it Twice. First in 1980, during which they won the cup and again in 2000 during which they co-hosted it with Ghana.
The country with the highest amount of winning in AFCON is Egypt with a total of 7 wins, while Mali as a country has been said to have never won the cup since its inception.
Nigeria has won the cup thrice.
👉1980 they won against Algeria.
Otto Glória was their Coach while Segun Odegbami was the Captain.
👉1994 they won against Tunisia.
Bora Milutinović was the Coach, while Stephen Keshi happened to be the Captain
👉2013 they won against South Africa.
Stephen Keshi coached the players while Joseph Yobo was the Captain of the team.
Nigeria will be playing with Morocco today being 14/1/2026 competing for AFCON in semi-final and if they happen to win they will play in the finals.
As a Nigerian I am rooting for them, I pray they come back with the cup.
