CHAPTER 9 — THE BOY HE NEVER KNEW

The next morning, Daniel could not sleep.

All night, he kept thinking about one thing.

His son.

David.

A little boy he had never seen.

A little boy who was growing up without knowing his father.

Daniel picked up his phone and called Cynthia.

"Hello," Cynthia answered.

"I want to go with you to the village."

Cynthia became quiet.

"Why?"

"I want to see David."

"You are sure?"

"Yes."

Cynthia sighed.

"Okay."

The next morning, they left Lagos.

The journey was quiet.

Cynthia sat by the window.

Daniel sat beside her.

Neither of them talked much.

Daniel kept looking at Cynthia.

He wanted to say many things.

But he was afraid.

After some time, he finally spoke.

"Cynthia."

She did not look at him.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him for a few seconds.

"You have said that many times."

"I know."

"But I really mean it."

Cynthia looked out of the window again.

"I don't know if I can trust you again,

Daniel."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

After many hours, they finally reached the village.

Cynthia's mother was standing outside the compound.

When she saw Daniel, she became quiet.

Daniel greeted her.

"Good afternoon, Mama."

She looked at him for a long time.

Then she said,

"Where have you been all these years?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"I am sorry."

The woman shook her head.

"You should not be saying sorry to me."

She pointed toward the house.

"You should say it to your son."

Daniel's heart began to beat fast.

"Where is he?"

"He is inside."

Daniel took a deep breath.

Then he walked slowly into the house.

Cynthia followed behind him.

There he was.

David.

A little boy sitting on the floor and playing with a small toy car.

Daniel stopped.

He could not move.

His eyes filled with tears.

The little boy looked up.

He stared at Daniel.

Then he looked at his mother.

"Mummy, who is this man?"

Cynthia could not answer.

Daniel bent down slowly.

He was crying now.

"My name is Daniel."

David looked at him.

"Are you my mummy's friend?"

Daniel smiled through his tears.

"Yes."

David looked at him again.

Then he asked,

"Are you my daddy?"

The room became silent.

Cynthia covered her mouth.

Daniel could not hold back his tears.

"Yes, David."

"I am your daddy."

David stood up.

He looked at Daniel for a few seconds.

Then he walked closer.

Daniel opened his arms.

David ran into them.

Daniel held his son tightly.

He cried like a child.

"I'm sorry, my son."

"I'm sorry I was not there."

David did not understand why his father was crying.

He simply held him.

Cynthia stood nearby, crying too.

For the first time, she saw Daniel holding the child she had raised alone.

And even though her heart was still hurting...

A small part of her was happy.

Daniel finally knew his son.

Later that evening, Daniel sat outside with David.

David kept asking questions.

"Where do you live?"

"Do you have a car?"

"Can you come and play with me again?"

Daniel laughed.

"Yes, I will come."

Cynthia heard him.

She quickly looked at him.

"Don't promise him what you cannot do."

Daniel looked at her.

"I won't."

Then his phone started ringing.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face changed.

It was his wife.

He stood up and moved away.

"Hello?"

"Daniel, where are you?"

He became silent.

"I asked you where you are."

Daniel looked back at Cynthia and David.

"I'm away on business."

His wife became quiet.

Then she asked,

"Who is with you?"

Daniel did not answer.

"Daniel..."

"I'm coming back soon."

He ended the call.

But he did not know that his wife had already started asking questions.

And she was not going to stop until she found the truth.

That night, Cynthia watched Daniel sleeping on a chair beside David.

She looked at her son.

Then she looked at Daniel.

She whispered,

"Why did you have to come back now?"

She wiped a tear from her face.

Because she knew one thing.

Daniel coming back into their lives would not be easy.

There was still a wife in Lagos.

There was still a secret.

And there was now a little boy who had finally found his father.

But what would happen when Daniel's wife discovered that Cynthia and David were in his life?

CHAPTER 8 — THE SON HE NEVER KNEW

Cynthia walked out of the restaurant with tears in her eyes.

She did not look back.

Daniel remained inside.

He sat quietly, looking at the empty chair where Cynthia had been sitting.

Her words kept coming back to him.

"I never wanted to be a homewrecker."

Daniel covered his face with his hands.

He was in pain.

He had lost the woman he loved.

But this time, he knew he was the one who caused the pain.

Meanwhile, Cynthia got home and cried.

Amaka saw her and quickly ran to her.

"Cynthia, what happened?"

Cynthia could not speak.

She sat on the bed and cried.

After some time, she finally said,
"Amaka... he has a wife."

Amaka was shocked.

"I knew it," she said quietly.

"I knew there was something he was hiding."

Cynthia wiped her tears.

"I never knew."

"I loved him because I thought he was single."

"I waited for him."

"I gave birth to his child."

"And all this time, he had another family."

Amaka held her hand.

"Cynthia, you have to think about yourself now."

Cynthia nodded.

But deep inside her heart, she was still thinking about Daniel.

Not because she wanted to take him from his family.

But because she wanted him to know about his son.

The next morning, Cynthia went to work.

She tried to act normal.

But her eyes were still swollen from crying.

When she entered the company, she saw Daniel standing near his office.

Their eyes met.

Cynthia quickly looked away.

Daniel wanted to talk to her.

But he did not know what to say.

Later that afternoon, Daniel sent a message to her.

"Please, I need to see you."

Cynthia looked at the message for a long time.

She wanted to ignore him.

But something inside her told her to go.

They met outside the company.

Daniel stood quietly.

"Cynthia..."

She looked at him.

"What do you want?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

"I want to meet my son."

Cynthia's heart stopped.

"My son?"

"Our son," Daniel said softly.

Cynthia looked away.

"You don't even know him."

"I know."

"You don't know what he likes."

"I know."

"You don't know what makes him laugh."

Daniel's eyes became wet.

"I know."

"You don't even know his name."

Daniel swallowed hard.

"Tell me."

Cynthia looked at him.

"His name is David."

Daniel repeated the name slowly.

"David."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"My son is called David."

But Cynthia did not smile.

"Daniel, I don't want David to grow up confused."

"I don't want him to see you today and lose you tomorrow."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

"I want to be in his life."

Cynthia became quiet.

Daniel continued.

"I know I made many mistakes."

"I know I hurt you."

"But David did nothing wrong."

"He deserves to know his father."

Cynthia looked at him for a long time.

Then she said,

"You can meet him."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you."

"But there is one thing."

Daniel waited.

"You must not make promises you cannot keep."

Daniel nodded.

"I promise."

Cynthia looked at him.

"Don't promise me."

"Promise your son."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I promise."

That evening, Cynthia called her mother in the village.

"Mama..."

"Yes, my daughter?"

"Daniel wants to meet David."

There was silence on the phone.

Her mother sighed.

"Are you sure?"

"I don't know, Mama."

"But David deserves to know his father."

Her mother agreed.

"Bring him."

The next day, Daniel sat alone in his office.

He could not stop thinking about David.

His own son.

A child he had never held.

A child he had never watched grow.

A child who had been waiting for a father he did not even know.

Daniel looked at an old picture Cynthia had shown him.

The little boy was smiling.

Daniel touched the picture with his finger.

"I'm sorry, my son," he whispered.

"I should have known you."

"I should have been there."

But Daniel did not know that his biggest problem was not meeting David.

It was what would happen when his wife found out that Cynthia and David were still in his life.

And soon...

She was going to discover everything.

Chapter 7 — TRUTH HE HID

The restaurant was quiet.

Daniel and Cynthia sat across from each other.

Neither of them touched the drinks on the table.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Cynthia... before you say anything, please let me explain."

Cynthia looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"I'm listening."

Daniel lowered his head.

"The day I left Nnewi, I truly wanted to come back for you."

Cynthia looked at him.

"Then why didn't you?"
Daniel sighed.

"When I got to Lagos, everything changed."

"My wife and my little girl were waiting for me."

"I looked at my daughter..."

"And I could not walk away."

Cynthia's heart became heavy.

Daniel continued.

"I wanted to call you many times."

"I even picked up my phone many times."

"But I didn't know what to say."

"I was afraid."

"I knew I had already hurt you."

"So instead of telling you the truth..."

"I kept quiet."

His voice became weak.

"Then I changed my number."

"I thought if I stayed away from you..."

"You would forget me."

Tears rolled down Cynthia's face.

"You really thought I would forget you?"
Daniel looked down.

"I was wrong."

"You promised to come back."

"I believed every word you said."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

After a few seconds, he spoke again.

"There is another truth you don't know."

Cynthia wiped her tears.

"What truth?"

Daniel looked straight into her eyes.

"My marriage was arranged by my parents."

Cynthia frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I never dated my wife."

"I never chose her."

"My parents wanted us to marry."

"I respected them, so I agreed."

Cynthia stayed quiet.

Daniel continued.

"I tried to be a good husband."

"But I never truly loved her."

"Then she gave birth to my daughter."

"I could not leave my child."

"So I stayed."

His voice shook.

"Then I came to Nnewi."

"I met you."

"And for the first time..."

"I fell in love."

Cynthia slowly stood up.

Her hands were shaking.

"So... all this time..."

"You already had a wife."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"And a child."

Daniel nodded again.

Cynthia stepped back.

Tears filled her eyes.

"My God..."

She covered her mouth.

"I never knew."

Daniel stood up.

"Cynthia..."

She raised her hand.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I loved you with all my heart."

"I never wanted to take another woman's husband."

"I never wanted to become a homewrecker."

"If I had known the truth..."

"I would have walked away the very first day."

Daniel felt his heart break.

"I'm sorry."

Cynthia shook her head.

"You didn't just lie to me."

"You destroyed my life."

"You made me wait for years."

"You left me to raise our son alone."

"You let me believe I was your future."

Daniel could not speak.

Every word she said was true.

Cynthia picked up her bag.

"I don't hate you, Daniel."

"But I can't forgive what you did."

She turned and walked toward the door.

Daniel quickly called her.

"Cynthia... please."

She stopped for a second.

Without turning back, she said softly,

"Some wounds are too deep to heal."

Then she walked away.

Daniel stood there, watching the

woman he truly loved disappear.

For the first time, he understood that one lie had destroyed two families.

And he knew that no amount of apology could bring back the years Cynthia had lost.

My amazing Facebook family,

I sincerely want to apologize for disappearing without any explanation.
I know many of you have been wondering where I've been and when I'd return. I'm truly sorry for keeping you waiting.
The truth is that I've been having issues with my phone, and because of that, I haven't been able to come online consistently or create and share stories with you the way I normally would. It has been frustrating, especially because I know many of you have been looking forward to my updates.
I want you to know how much I appreciate your patience, your messages, and your continued support, even while I've been away. It means more to me than words can express.
The good news is that I'm back, and I'm ready to continue what we started together! I'll be continuing The Engineer I Fell in Love With because I really want to complete the story and share every remaining chapter with you. I can't wait for us to enjoy the journey together again.
Thank you for not giving up on me. I hope you'll forgive my absence and continue to support me as we pick up right where we left off.
With love and gratitude, ❤️ Thank you all for being the best fans anyone could ask for.

THE ENGINEER SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH

CHAPTER 6 — THE DAY THEY MET AGAIN

Cynthia finally got a job.

It was not a big job.

She was employed as a cleaner in a large engineering company in Lagos.

Even though the salary was small, she was happy.

At least she could send money home to her mother and little David.

Every morning, she woke up early and went to work.

One Monday morning, she was cleaning one of the hallways when she heard people talking.

"Good morning, sir."

"Good morning, Manager."

"Welcome, sir."

Everybody seemed nervous.

Cynthia looked up.

Then her heart stopped.

It was Daniel.

The mop fell from her hand.

Her eyes widened.

Daniel turned and saw her.

For a few seconds, both of them froze.

Daniel could not believe his eyes.

"Cynthia?"

He almost whispered her name.

Tears immediately filled Cynthia's eyes.

"Daniel!"

She ran toward him happily.

After all these years, she had finally found him.

She opened her arms, trying to hug him.

But Daniel quickly stepped back.

Cynthia stopped.

The smile on her face disappeared.

Several workers were standing nearby.

Everyone was watching.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"What are you doing?" he asked quietly.

Cynthia looked confused.

"Daniel... it's me."

"I know."

"What are you doing in Lagos?" Daniel asked.

Cynthia could not believe what she was hearing.

"What am I doing in Lagos?" she repeated.

Before she could say more, the office secretary hurried over.

"Sir, the board meeting is about to start."

Daniel looked relieved.

"Okay, I'm coming."

The secretary looked at Cynthia and then back at Daniel.

"Sir, everyone is waiting."

Daniel nodded.

Then he turned back to Cynthia.

"We'll talk later."

And just like that, he walked away.

Cynthia stood there with tears running down her face.

The workers looked at her curiously.

Nobody understood what had just happened.

The whole day, Cynthia could not focus on her work.

Questions kept running through her mind.

Why was Daniel acting like that?

Why did he step away from her?

Why did he look scared?

That evening, after work, Daniel called her.

"Cynthia."

She turned around.

They were standing in the company parking lot.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Cynthia finally broke the silence.

"Why?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"Cynthia..."

"No."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Why didn't you come back?"

Daniel remained silent.

"I waited for you."

Silence.

"I waited for months."

Silence.

"I waited for years."

Daniel could not look at her.

Cynthia's voice began to shake.

"I called your number."

Nothing.

"I cried."

Nothing.

"I gave birth to your son."

Daniel's head snapped up.

"What?"

"A son."

Daniel looked shocked."A son?" he whispered.

"Yes."

Cynthia wiped her tears.

"His name is David."

Daniel sat down slowly on a nearby bench.

His whole body felt weak.

"You have a son, Daniel."

For the first time, guilt hit him harder than ever before.

He remembered the promises he made.
He remembered the lies.

He remembered the day he left Nnewi.

"Cynthia..."

She interrupted him."No."

"You don't get to call my name like that."

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

"I am sorry."

Cynthia laughed bitterly.

"Sorry?"

"You disappeared."

"You left me alone."

"You left me to raise your child alone."

Daniel had no answer.

Not a single one.

Then Cynthia looked straight into his eyes.

"There is something I want to know."

Daniel swallowed hard.

"What is it?"

"The woman I saw with you."

Daniel became silent.

"The little girl."

More silence.

Cynthia's heart began to beat faster.

Then she asked the question that had haunted her for years.

"Daniel..."

"Who are they?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because he knew the truth could not stay hidden forever.

And for the first time in years...

He was about to tell Cynthia everything.

THE ENGINEER SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH

CHAPTER 5 — THE PROMISE THAT NEVER CAME

After Daniel left for Lagos, Cynthia waited for him every day.

Every morning, she would wake up and look at the road.

Every evening, she would sit under the mango tree where they used to talk.

She believed he would return.

"He promised me," she would always tell herself.

Days passed.

Weeks passed.

Months passed.

But Daniel never came back.

At first, he answered a few of her calls.

Then suddenly, his number stopped going through.

Whenever she called, she heard the same thing.

"The number you are trying to call is unavailable."

Cynthia kept trying.

Again.

And again.

And again.

But nothing worked.

One morning, Cynthia woke up feeling sick.

Her mother noticed it.

"Cynthia, are you okay?"

"I don't know, Mama."

A few weeks later, the truth came out.

Cynthia was pregnant.

The news hit her like thunder.

She sat alone in her room and cried.

She wished Daniel was there.

She wished he could hold her hand.

She wished he could explain why he had disappeared.

But Daniel was nowhere to be found.

Months later, Cynthia gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

She named him David.

The little boy looked so much like his father.

Whenever Cynthia looked at him, she remembered Daniel.

The man she loved.

The man who promised to come back.

The man who never returned.

Two years passed.

David grew into a cheerful little boy.

He loved running around the compound and calling for his mother.

But life was becoming harder.

Money was not enough.

Cynthia knew she had to do something.

One evening, she sat with her mother outside the house.

"Mama, I want to go to Lagos."

Her mother looked surprised.

"Lagos?"

"Yes."

"I need a better life for David."

Her mother was silent.

Then she nodded slowly.

"You are a strong woman, Cynthia."

Tears filled Cynthia's eyes.

"I'll leave David with you until I find my feet."

Her mother held her hand.

"Don't worry. I'll take care of him."

A few days later, Cynthia traveled to Lagos.

It was her first time in such a big city.

The roads were busy.

The buildings were tall.

Everything looked different.

Luckily, her childhood friend, Amaka, welcomed her.

"You can stay with me until you find a job," Amaka said.

Cynthia hugged her tightly.

"Thank you."

Days turned into weeks.

Every morning, Cynthia left the house looking for work.

Sometimes she returned tired.

Sometimes she returned disappointed.

But she never gave up.

Then one afternoon, something happened.

Something that made her heart stop.

Cynthia was standing near a shopping plaza when she saw a black SUV pull up.

The driver opened the doorA man stepped out.

Cynthia froze.

Her heart began to pound.

Her hands started shaking.

"No..." she whispered.

"It can't be."

The man turned around.

It was Daniel.

Older.

Richer.

But it was Daniel.

Before Cynthia could move, a beautiful woman stepped out of the car.

Then a little girl followed her.

The little girl quickly ran into Daniel's arms.

"Daddy!"

Daniel laughed and carried her.

The woman smiled.

They looked like a happy family.

Cynthia's eyes widened.

She felt confused.

She felt lost.

She felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.

"Daniel..." she whispered.

She wanted to run to him.

She wanted answers.

She wanted the truth.

But before she could move, Daniel entered the car.

A few seconds later, the SUV drove away.

Cynthia stood there like a statue.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.

That night, she returned to Amaka's house quietly.

Amaka immediately noticed something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Cynthia told her everything.

From the day she met Daniel in Nnewi.

To the promise he made.

To the child he left behind.

To seeing him that afternoon.

Amaka listened carefully.

Then she sighed.

"Cynthia, forget him."

Cynthia looked at her.

"He has forgotten you."

"No," Cynthia replied immediately.

"Yes, he has."

Cynthia shook her head.

"You don't understand"What don't you understand?"

"I never knew the truth."

Amaka frowned.

"What truth?"

Cynthia looked down.

"I never knew Daniel had a wife."

The room became silent.

For the first time, Cynthia began to wonder if the love she had waited for all these years was nothing but a lie.

And somewhere in Lagos...

Daniel was sitting in his living room with his wife and daughter.

Completely unaware that the woman he left behind in Nnewi was now living in the same city.

A nd that fate was about to bring them face to face again.

THE ENGINEER SHE FELL LOVE WITH
CHAPTER 4 —

Cynthia was happier than she had ever been.

Every evening, she sat with Daniel under the mango tree near his house.

They talked.

They laughed.

They shared stories.

And with each passing day, Cynthia loved him more.

One evening, Daniel looked unusually quiet.

He was not smiling like before.

He kept staring at the ground.

Cynthia noticed immediately.

“Daniel, what is wrong?” she asked.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“There is something I need to tell you.”

Cynthia's heart started beating fast.

“What is it?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I have to travel to Lagos.”

The smile on Cynthia's face disappeared immediately.

“Travel?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe a few weeks.”

Cynthia felt like somebody had poured cold water on her.

“A few weeks?” she whispered.

Daniel nodded again.

“I have some important business to take care of.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The night suddenly felt colder.

The lantern beside them flickered quietly.

Then Cynthia's eyes filled with tears.

“Are you leaving me?”

Daniel looked away.
“No.”

“But you're going.”

“I have to.”

Cynthia wiped her tears.

“I thought you loved me.”

Daniel felt a sharp pain in his chest.

The words hit him hard.

Because part of him truly cared about her.

But he was hiding a dangerous secret.

He reached for her hand.

“Cynthia, listen to me.”

She looked at him.

“I do love you.”

Cynthia's eyes brightened a little.

“Then why are you leaving?”

Daniel forced a smile.

“Because I need to settle some things first.”

“Will you come back?”

Daniel squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“You're not lying to me?”

Daniel's heart skipped.

For a few seconds, he could not answer.

Then he nodded slowly.

“No. I'm not lying.”

Cynthia smiled through her tears.

“Then I'll wait for you.”

Daniel looked away again.

The guilt inside him was growing every day.

But Cynthia trusted him completely.

That night, she went home and told her mother.

“Mama, Daniel is traveling to Lagos.”

Her mother stopped cooking and looked at her.

“Lagos?”

“Yes.”
“When is he coming back?”

“He promised he would return for me.”

Her mother stared at her quietly.

Something about the whole thing did not feel right.

But seeing the happiness in her daughter's eyes, she kept her worries to herself.

The next morning, the whole village gathered to say goodbye to the engineers.

The road project was almost finished.

Workers loaded bags into trucks.

People waved happily.

Cynthia stood beside Daniel, holding back tears.

Daniel carried only one small bag.

Before entering the vehicle, he turned to Cynthia.

“I'll be back.”

Cynthia nodded.

“I'll be waiting.”

Daniel smiled.

Then the vehicle started moving.

Slowly.

Slowly.

Until it disappeared from sight.

Cynthia stood there long after everyone had gone home.

She kept staring at the road.

Hoping he would come back quickly.

But far away in Lagos...

A little girl ran out of a house the moment she saw a taxi stop outside.

“Daddy!”

She jumped into Daniel's arms.

Daniel hugged her tightly.
Then a beautiful woman stepped out of the doorway.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Welcome home,” she said softly.

Daniel looked at his wife and daughter.

The family he had hidden from Cynthia.

The family waiting for him all this time.

And at that moment, Daniel knew one thing.

The lie he had built in Nnewi was about to destroy someone's heart.

Then a beautiful woman stepped out of
the doorway.

CHAPTER 3 — LOVE WAS GROWING

Cynthia was now the happiest girl in Nnewi.

Everywhere she went, people noticed the smile on her face.

Even old Mama Ifeoma from the next compound laughed one morning and said,

“Cynthia, your teeth are shining too much these days.

Tell us the secret.”

Cynthia covered her face shyly and ran away laughing.

The truth was simple.

She was deeply in love with Engineer Daniel.

Every day after the market closed, Cynthia would go to Daniel’s house.

She cooked for him.

She swept his room.

She washed his plates carefully.

Sometimes she even stayed late just to hear him talk.

Daniel also enjoyed her company.

He liked the way Cynthia laughed.

He liked the way she cared for him.

And slowly, he became used to her presence.

One evening, Daniel returned from work looking very tired.

His clothes were dusty, and sweat covered his face.

Cynthia quickly brought water for him.

“You look stressed,” she said softly.

Daniel sighed deeply. “Today was hard.”

Cynthia disappeared into the kitchen and came back with hot food.

Rice and stew.

Daniel looked surprised.

“You cooked all this?”

Cynthia smiled proudly. “Yes.”

Daniel tasted the food slowly.

Then he smiled.

“This is the best food I’ve eaten in a long time.”

Cynthia’s heart danced with joy.

Nobody had ever praised her like that before.

That night, they sat outside together under the moon.

The village was quiet.

Only the sound of crickets filled the air.

Daniel looked at Cynthia for a long time.

“You really care about me,” he said quietly.

Cynthia smiled.

“I just want you to be happy.”

Daniel looked away immediately.

For a moment, guilt filled his heart.

But Cynthia did not notice.

She was too busy dreaming about love.

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone started ringing.

He quickly stood up and moved far away before answering the call.

Cynthia watched him carefully.

His face changed immediately.

His soft smile disappeared.

“Yes… I understand,” he said quietly on the phone.

A woman’s voice could be heard faintly from the phone, but Cynthia could not hear the words clearly.

Daniel looked worried.

After the call ended, he returned slowly.
“Who was that?” Cynthia asked.

Daniel forced a smile.

“My office manager.”

Cynthia nodded slowly.

But something inside her heart felt strange for the first time.

Still, she ignored it.

Love had already covered her eyes.

The next day, Cynthia followed Daniel to the river side where the workers were repairing the road.

The workers joked with her immediately.

“Engineer’s wife has come!” one of them laughed.

Cynthia blushed deeply.

Daniel laughed softly too, but he said nothing.

That small moment gave Cynthia hope.
Big hope.

That night, she lay on her bed smiling at the ceiling.

She imagined herself wearing a white wedding dress.

She imagined Daniel holding her hand in church.

She imagined leaving the village with him and starting a new life in the city.

But far away in the city…

A woman sat alone beside a window, holding her phone tightly.

Tears filled her eyes as she whispered,
“Daniel… when are you coming home to us?”

Beside her sat a little girl sleeping peacefully on the couch.

The same little girl Cynthia saw in the picture.

End of chapter 3

“She gave him her heart … not knowing another woman already owned his name.”
