My Biggest Mistake When Starting My Baking Business

When I started my baking business, one of the biggest mistakes I made was underpricing my products. Because I was new, I allowed sentiments to influence my pricing. I felt the need to attract customers and didn’t want to charge too much. As a result, I priced my baked goods too low—sometimes even forgetting to include delivery fees.

At first, I didn’t realize the impact of this mistake. After every delivery, I had little to no profit left, yet I kept wondering why my business wasn’t growing. I struggled financially and found myself constantly complaining about not making gains.

It wasn’t until I attended a business workshop on pricing that I had a breakthrough. The session opened my eyes to the real issue—I was the one holding my business back with poor pricing strategies. I learned how to properly structure my prices to reflect my costs, time, and effort.

That experience changed everything for me. Since then, I’ve applied what I learned, and my business has significantly improved. Looking back, I realize that understanding the value of your work and pricing accordingly is crucial for any business to thrive.

CHALLENGES MAKES IT BETTER

As I mixed and kneaded the dough for my famous Chinchin or the batter for cakes I couldn't help but think about the journey that had brought me to this point. Building a successful baking, catering business, and liquid soap from scratch had not been easy.

There were days when the oven broke down, and I had to scramble to find a replacement. Times when catering orders were cancelled at the last minute, leaving me with a batch of unsold food. And moments when my liquid soap recipes just wouldn't come together as planned.

But despite the setbacks, I persevered. I remembered why I started this business in the first place: to share my passion for baking, cooking, and sustainable living with my community.

So, I rose above the challenges. I sought out mentorship, attended workshops, and joined online forums to learn from others in my industry. I adapted to changes in the market, experimented with new recipes, and innovated my products to stay ahead of the competition.

And slowly but surely, my business began to flourish. Customers raved about my sweet cakes, catering clients praised my attention to detail, and my liquid soap products gained a loyal following.

As I slid the sweet Cake into the oven, the aroma wafting from the kitchen reminded me that every challenge is an opportunity to grow, learn, and rise above. Pastries by Elma
