In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lt. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the Army said troops of Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, alongside other security agencies, were on an intelligence-led patrol mission in Imezi Owa on May 6 when they came under attack.
According to the statement, the operation followed efforts to track suspected terrorist collaborators in the community.
The Army said troops advancing into the community on foot were attacked from a building allegedly used by IPOB/ESN operatives, resulting in injuries to three soldiers.
“Despite the attack, troops maintained operational dominance, foiled the attack and secured the general area, while the injured personnel were promptly evacuated,” the statement said.
It added that the fire outbreak was caused by the detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices allegedly stored inside the building by the suspected terrorists.
“During the exchange of fire, Improvised Explosive Devices stored by the terrorists in the building used as their hideout detonated and triggered a fire outbreak that destroyed the hideout,” the Army stated.
The military further disclosed that troops recovered additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities during subsequent searches in the area.
According to the Army, the shrine was destroyed to prevent further use by criminals, while one suspect described as a collaborator was arrested and handed over to the police for investigation.
The Army urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, while warning criminal elements against using communities as operational bases.
“The general public is hereby reassured that ongoing operations are conducted with utmost professionalism and a firm commitment to protecting lives and property,” the statement added.
