Fontanelle called Ntiwa isi by our people are the two weak/soft points on the head of the newborn babies. One in front and the other one at the back of the head. The one at the back closes after 6weeks of delivery while the one at the front closes about 18 Months of life. These openings are normal in babies as they allow the brain of the newborn baby to expand and grow well for better brain functioning. It closes when the brain has good development. Any baby that doesn't have these openings Will have repeated convulsions as the brain will be growing in a closed space and this cause pressure on the brain that will cause convulsions. The baby if not detected earlier may die or have mental illness both in the childhood and later in life. There head is usually very small therefore housing SMALL BRAIN MATTER!When detected earlier, surgery is done to create the artificial opening which will now act as NTIWA ISI so that the brain can have space to grow and function well.
But our people will now see this as a disease and will even start applying medications so that It will close. HABA! THANK GOD THAT THOSE HERBAL MEDICATIONS DO NOT WORK!
It is important also to know that some NTIWA ISI are not normal more especially when the baby is not growing well at the same time. In all, always contact your doctor to examine the baby to ensure all is well! Have a lovely Sunday!
