Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has called on Nigerians to mark the nation’s 66th Independence anniversary with thanksgiving, courage and optimism, urging citizens to confront the country’s challenges while remaining committed to national renewal.

Mbah spoke on Thursday at a thanksgiving Mass at the Enugu Government House Chapel, saying nation-building was not always accompanied by fanfare, but was sustained by the daily contributions of citizens across different sectors.

“Let us acknowledge honestly the challenges before us. But let us also refuse the temptation to define Nigeria only by her difficulties. A nation is not measured only by the problems it faces, but also by the courage with which it confronts them,” he said.

The governor said the reforms of President Bola Tinubu were creating new opportunities and economic conditions for states prepared to leverage them, describing Enugu’s ongoing transformation as evidence of what resilience, self-belief and purposeful leadership could achieve.

He cited progress across education, healthcare, roads, aviation, agriculture, tourism and the revival of moribund assets, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to security, human capital development, economic growth and improved quality of life.

In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, commended the Mbah administration for significant improvements in security, recalling the severe insecurity experienced in the state between 2021 and 2023.

Onaga stressed that security was essential to investment and development, while charging leaders to use public office to serve the people, particularly the vulnerable. He also called for a stronger national foundation anchored on justice, truth and service.

The Mass was attended by heads of other arms of government, senior government officials and other leaders.

NGE: Mbah’s Projects Demonstrate Solid Infrastructure for Enugu’s Growth

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has commended Governor Peter Mbah’s transformation agenda in Enugu State, saying projects delivered by his administration are laying a solid foundation for accelerated economic growth.

The commendation followed the Guild’s tour of major projects across the state and an interactive session with Governor Mbah at the Government House, on the sidelines of the 2026 All Nigeria Editors Conference attended by over 300 editors, senior media executives and veterans.

NGE President, Eze Anaba, said the tour provided firsthand evidence of the scale and impact of the Mbah administration’s interventions across key sectors.

The projects inspected included the Enugu International Hospital, major road networks, Smart Schools, Ngwo Pines tourism complex, Integrated Livestock Hub, rehabilitated Hotel Presidential and the Command and Control Centre.

“There’s a solid infrastructure on ground that will grow the economy and expand the state. If a sub-national like Enugu can deploy resources effectively and be this dedicated to infrastructure and governance, then there is hope for Nigeria,” Anaba said.

He noted the significant progress since the Guild’s previous visit to Enugu, describing it as evidence of what deliberate and effective governance can achieve.

At the conference gala, former Ogun State Governor and media veteran, Chief Segun Osoba, commended Governor Mbah’s technology-driven security architecture, urging other states to emulate the model.

Osoba cited the swift deployment of Enugu’s security assets following the security breach at Affa in Udi Local Government Area, which resulted in the rescue of two kidnap victims.

Responding, Governor Mbah said the administration’s interventions were deliberately designed as interconnected drivers of economic transformation.

“What you saw—the security, transport, investments, tourism, and all that—are all interconnected. They are mutually reinforcing. They’re all designed to achieve a common objective,” Mbah said.

When Enugu Air Landed in Douala

On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, something bigger than an aircraft landed in Douala.

Enugu Air touched down at Douala International Airport on its maiden international flight, opening a direct air corridor between South-East Nigeria and Central Africa—and advancing Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s vision of positioning Enugu as a regional economic and tourism hub.

Representing the Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the new route was a deliberate product of Mbah’s vision to make Enugu more accessible, connected and investment-ready, with a target of attracting three million visitors annually.

The direct connection, he said, would deepen trade, tourism, sports and cultural exchanges, while Enugu Air’s commitment to sustaining the route would provide a reliable bridge between both regions.

Cameroon’s Littoral Region Governor, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, described the arrival as the beginning of a new partnership with Enugu, while Douala International Airport Director, Jacob Bahayang Mbargaso, called it an event of “triple significance”—diplomatic, economic and commercial.

Nigerian High Commissioner to Cameroon, Sani Umar Jibrilla, said the route would particularly benefit South-East traders and entrepreneurs, strengthening business and people-to-people exchanges.

For Enugu indigenes in Douala, the impact was deeply personal. Lady Love Arum, who has lived there for over 16 years, said the direct flight would end years of difficult journeys by road or through Lagos.

What landed in Douala, therefore, was more than an aircraft. It was another expression of Governor Mbah’s vision in motion—connecting Enugu to new markets, opportunities and people, and turning the State’s regional ambition into reality.

Mbah to Media, Government: Let Truth and Evidence Speak

…As NGE honours Enugu Governor with Good Governance Plaque

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has challenged government and the media to meet at the point of truth, urging journalists to go beyond headlines and political narratives through independent investigation and evidence-based reporting.

Mbah spoke on Thursday while welcoming over 300 editors to the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu, themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” with a sub-theme on detecting and debunking AI misinformation.

The Governor said government must be transparent and accountable, while the media must independently scrutinise its actions and report its findings without being driven by predetermined narratives.

“Sometimes that truth will expose failure. Sometimes it will reveal progress. The obligation for us both is the same in either case – serving the people of Nigeria,” he said.

Mbah urged editors to deepen investigative journalism as AI increasingly enables the fabrication of photographs, cloned voices and manipulated videos.

“My challenge to you, therefore, is simple – go deeper, beyond the surface,” he said, urging journalists to examine evidence, test competing claims and establish what happened.

Highlighting his administration’s interventions, Mbah cited over 1,500 kilometres of roads, more than 7,000 classrooms, Smart Green Schools and Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state’s 260 wards, alongside water infrastructure, transport terminals, CNG buses, Enugu Air, industrial revival and a new city.

He said the administration was positioning Enugu as an economic gateway to the South-East, while acknowledging the support of President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government.

The Governor invited the editors to independently assess developments in Enugu by engaging residents, businesses and communities across the state.

A major highlight of the opening ceremony was the presentation of a Good Governance Plaque to Governor Mbah by the Nigerian Guild of Editors.
