Engineering Competitive Advantage: Why Energy Performance Is Designed—Not Discovered
Most organisations believe energy costs become a problem after operations begin.
The reality is that they often begin much earlier—during engineering and design.
Long before a facility is commissioned, decisions about process design, equipment selection, plant layout, system integration, and control philosophy are already determining operating costs, productivity, reliability, and competitiveness for years, sometimes decades.
This is why energy performance should never be treated as an afterthought.
Too often, organisations ask:
• Should we install solar?
• Should we buy another generator?
• Should we invest in battery storage?
These are important questions, but they are not the first questions.
The first question should always be:
What engineering and energy strategy best supports our business strategy?
When strategy comes first, technology becomes an enabler—not the objective.
In my latest Engineering Smarter Energy article, I explore why organisations that achieve sustainable competitive advantage focus on five engineering levers:
✅ Energy Audits
✅ Process Optimisation
✅ Waste Heat Recovery
✅ Digital Energy Management
✅ Predictive Energy Analytics
These are not simply engineering tools—they are strategic capabilities that help organisations reduce operating costs, improve productivity, strengthen resilience, and create long-term business value.
For Africa, this conversation has never been more important. Rising energy costs, fuel price volatility, grid instability, and increasing global competition demand more than additional energy supply.
They demand better engineering decisions.

Question for today's discussion:
Do you think energy performance should become a boardroom discussion during project design rather than an operational discussion after commissioning?
Share your thoughts in the comments. I'd be interested to hear your perspective.
