Yesterday, we had the privilege of attending an exclusive closed-door agricultural meeting hosted by renowned agribusiness leader Tsekohol Denison . It was an eye-opening and highly impactful gathering that brought together passionate stakeholders, professionals, investors, and key players across the agricultural value chain.

The discussions covered virtually every aspect of agriculture, from PRODUCTION, MECHANIZED FARMING, PROCESSING, HARVESTING, STORAGE, VALUE ADDITION, FINANCING, MARKETING, and COMMODITY TRADING. The depth of knowledge shared and the practical insights provided were truly remarkable.

One of the highlights of the event was the mentorship session delivered by Ogu of Syngenta agro AG africa middle East and whose wealth of experience and industry expertise provided valuable guidance on building sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises. His insights reinforced the enormous opportunities that exist within the sector for those willing to approach agriculture as a serious business.

Beyond the knowledge gained, the event created an excellent platform for networking and collaboration. We had the opportunity to connect with experienced farmers, agribusiness entrepreneurs, industry experts, and innovators who are actively shaping the future of agriculture.

Another memorable moment was meeting the co-founder of a fintech startup Obtainly where discussions centered around agricultural financing and how access to capital can empower farmers and agribusinesses to scale their operations.

This gathering further strengthened our conviction that agriculture remains one of the most promising sectors for wealth creation, food security, job creation, and economic development. The conversations, mentorship, and connections made will undoubtedly contribute to our agricultural journey and future ventures.

Yesterday, we did a breakdown of how much your net profit could be if you operate a 5,000 layers bird farm. Next, we will also show you how much profit you can make from just 500 layers birds.

But before then, let us calculate something very interesting…

HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE FROM JUST 50 BROILER BIRDS?

Yes, just 50 birds.

Many people think poultry farming must start big before it becomes profitable. That is not true. A small broiler setup can be done 3 to 4 times in one year, and each cycle can keep turning over profit for you.

And the good thing about Nigeria today is this:

We now have festive periods almost every 3 to 4 months, Easter, Salah, Summer events, December celebrations, weddings, birthdays, and weekend parties.

This means selling 50 mature broiler birds should not be a problem if you plan properly.

So let us break it down in simple terms.

50 BROILER FARMING COST BREAKDOWN (BEGINNER FRIENDLY MODEL)

This estimate is based on a normal 7-week broiler farming cycle in Nigeria.

1. CHICK COST

50 day-old broiler chicks
₦1,500 per chick

Total = ₦75,000

2. EQUIPMENT & BROODING SETUP

Feeders, drinkers, charcoal pots, and basic brooding materials.

Estimated cost = ₦30,000

3. BEDDING, TRANSPORT & LABOUR

Litter materials, transportation, setup assistance, and handling costs.

Estimated cost = ₦15,000

4. MEDICATION & VACCINATION

Vaccines, vitamins, stress relief drugs, and preventive treatment.

Estimated cost = ₦20,000

5. FEED — THE MOST IMPORTANT PART

A broiler bird can consume between 4.8kg to 5.5kg of feed within 7 weeks.

To be realistic, we use 5.2kg per bird.

50 birds × 5.2kg = 260kg total feed

FEED SPLIT

Starter feed (0–4 weeks) = 60%
Finisher feed (5–7 weeks) = 40%

Starter feed = 156kg
Finisher feed = 104kg

Converted to bags:

Starter = about 7 bags
Finisher = about 5 bags

Total feed = 12 bags

FEED COST

Starter feed = ₦21,500 × 7 bags = ₦150,500

Finisher feed = ₦21,000 × 5 bags = ₦105,000

Total feed cost = ₦255,500

TOTAL PROJECT COST

Chicks = ₦75,000
Equipment = ₦30,000
Transport & Labour = ₦15,000
Medication = ₦20,000
Feed = ₦255,500

GRAND TOTAL = ₦395,500

MORTALITY REALITY CHECK

In poultry farming, losses can happen.

Using a 10% mortality estimate:

50 birds = 5 possible losses

Expected surviving birds = 45 birds

Important:
Even if some birds die, your feed cost does not reduce because feed is already purchased for the full flock.

COST PER BIRD

If 45 birds survive:

₦395,500 ÷ 45 = about ₦8,789 per bird

If all 50 birds survive:

₦395,500 ÷ 50 = about ₦7,910 per bird

PROFIT POSSIBILITY DURING FESTIVE PERIODS

During festive seasons, chicken prices usually go up because demand increases.

If you add just ₦3,000 to ₦4,000 profit per bird:

₦3,000 × 45 birds = ₦135,000 profit

₦4,000 × 45 birds = ₦180,000 profit

Now imagine doing this 3 to 4 times every year and even with like 100 or 200 birds .

This is why many smart people are beginning to take poultry farming seriously.

Instead of waiting endlessly for ₦80,000 or ₦150,000 salary jobs, why not save small money and start something for yourself?
