PROFITABLE MAIZE PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA

Maize is a raw material to several industries including, feed mill, flour mill etc.
Maize can be produced during cropping season as well as through irrigation. Commercial maize production in Nigeria is highly profitable when modern production technologies are employed which include use of farm machinery to bring large expense of land under cultivation, use of high yielding hybrid seeds, timely adequate and correct application of inputs (herbicides, fertilizer etc.) and strict adherence to other agronomic practices.

When properly cultivated, maize can give up to 50% return on investment (ROI) in less than 3½ months. A yield of over 4.5 tons per hectare can be achieved in both irrigated maize plot and rain fed maize plot as recorded at CSS Farms during 2021 cropping season. Presently a bag of 100kg of maize goes for more than N14,000 during glut season and up N35,000 after glut season.
