FACTS ABOUT YOGHURT
Yoghurt is a dairy product made by fermenting milk with a yoghurt culture.
Health benefits range from protecting against osteoporosis to relieving irritable bowel disease and aiding digestion, depending on the type consumed.
Yoghurt is high in protein, calcium, vitamins, and live culture, or probiotics, which can enhance the gut microbiota.
These offer protection for bones and teeth and help prevent digestive problems.Low fat yoghurt is a useful source of protein on a weights loss diet. Probiotics boost the immune system.
In 2014, researchers found that consuming yoghurt may help protect against type 2 diabetes.
HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD YOGHURT
BAD YOGHURT: Most yoghurts you get on the shelves of grocery stores are a combination of corn starch, gelatin syrup and other additives which are not healthy.
These ones are loaded with preservatives and so do not need refrigeration to stay fresh.
They have long expiry dates, some for as much as six months.
GOOD YOGHURT: Good quality yoghurt starts as fresh milk or cream. It is often first pasteurized, then fermented with various live bacteria cultures, and incubated at a specific temperature to precipitate bacteria growth.
The finished yoghurt is refrigerated without break from production plant all the way to distributors and to final consumers, because it contains no preservatives and would go bad otherwise.
The expiry date is short, usually 2 to 3 weeks from date of manufacture.
