Ibadan stands as a vibrant melting pot of arts, culture, and commerce in southwestern Nigeria. Its proximity to Abeokuta, renowned for Adire tie‑and‑dye, and Iseyin, celebrated as the cradle of Aso‑oke, places the city at the heart of Nigeria’s textile heritage. This geographical and cultural positioning makes Ibadan an ideal location for a project that interrogates and reimagines Nigerian fashion traditions.

The decision by Toyin Gbomedo, PhD researcher at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, to situate her doctoral research “Reimagining Aso‑Ebi: Advancing Cultural Sustainability, Reducing Fashion Waste” in Ibadan—outside the cosmopolitan hub of Lagos—reflects a deliberate effort to highlight the city’s unique cultural and historical significance within Nigeria’s fashion ecosystem. While Lagos is often seen as the commercial capital and a hub for contemporary fashion, Ibadan offers something distinct: a city deeply rooted in heritage, positioned at the crossroads of tradition and innovation.

By focusing outside Lagos, the project underscores the importance of decentralizing fashion research and amplifying communities whose contributions are often overshadowed by metropolitan narratives. For Ibadan’s fashion community, this choice brings tangible benefits: greater visibility through exhibitions, documentary films, and publications; recognition of their craft within global academic circles; and access to international networks that foster collaboration and future partnerships. This positions Ibadan not only as a hub of cultural identity and creativity but also as a vital participant in shaping sustainable futures for Nigerian fashion.

The collaboration draws strength from three institutions. The University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier academic institution, will provide intellectual grounding and contextual support. Zucchini Fashion Center, located in Ibadan, serves as institutional partner, ensuring the research is embedded in the lived realities of practitioners through workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities. Meanwhile, the London College of Fashion situates the project within global academic debates on sustainability and fashion systems, ensuring international relevance.

Ultimately, the choice of Ibadan reflects a conscious effort to center heritage, amplify overlooked voices, and demonstrate that meaningful innovation in fashion sustainability can emerge from spaces deeply connected to tradition.

The Fashion Retail Production service at Zucchini Fashion Center is designed as an enterprise‑enabling platform. Through the Innovation & Production Hub, the Center positions itself as a strategic partner for fashion retail entrepreneurs—particularly women and young people—by providing reliable, high‑quality production services. This model allows clients to concentrate on marketing, customer acquisition, and business expansion, while Zucchini ensures operational excellence in production.

The recent engagement at the Center with Mrs. Ruth, a young, energetic entrepreneur from Lagos exemplifies our consulting approach on the fashion retail production service. Her Afrocentric brand, built around indigenous textiles such as Adire, aligns with Zucchini’s commitment to local identity and sustainable fashion. The consulting process involved structured discussions on business objectives, textile selection, style development, color coordination, sizing systems, and production timelines—each framed as critical deliverables in building a scalable retail operation.

A key insight from Mrs. Ruth was her intentional search for a production partner capable of growing with her brand. This reflects that entrepreneurs seek not just service providers but strategic allies who can support long‑term growth. By attracting her through our online presence and demonstrating alignment with her vision, Zucchini Fashion Center is positioned as that partner.

This engagement underscores the Center’s role as both a production facility and a business development advisor. The responsibility extends beyond manufacturing garments to guiding entrepreneurs in aligning their creative vision with operational realities. This dual role—production excellence combined with strategic consulting—ensures that emerging fashion businesses are not only well‑made but also well‑positioned for sustainable success.

Weaving Health Into Your Wardrobe IV: Choose to Wear Healthy.

Clothing is not just a necessity or a fashion statement — it is a daily choice that directly influences your health, comfort, and overall well-being. By consciously selecting what you wear, you can weave health into your wardrobe and make clothing a partner in your wellness journey.

The fabric you choose is one of the most important factors in healthy dressing. Natural materials such as cotton, linen, wool, and silk offer unique benefits that synthetic fabrics often lack.

1. Cotton: Breathable and gentle, cotton allows air circulation and prevents moisture buildup. It’s ideal for sensitive skin and hot climates.

2. Linen: Derived from flax, linen is naturally antibacterial and highly breathable. Its temperature-regulating properties keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

3. Wool: Known for winter wear, wool is surprisingly versatile. Its thermoregulating qualities make it suitable year-round, while its fire resistance and durability add extra health and safety benefits.

4. Silk: Luxurious yet practical, silk is hypoallergenic and soothing on the skin, making it a great choice for those with allergies or sensitivities.

5. Synthetic Materials: Fabrics like polyester and nylon may be durable and affordable, but they often trap heat and moisture, leading to discomfort, skin irritation, and potential exposure to harmful chemicals.

Building a wardrobe around natural, breathable, and skin-friendly fabrics is an investment in your long-term health. Your wardrobe is a daily opportunity to nurture your health. By choosing to wear healthy, you transform clothing from mere fabric into a tool for wellness.

Weaving Health Into Your Wardrobe III: Clothing Does Affect You.

Clothing is more than just a matter of style — it plays a direct role in your physical and mental well-being. The fabrics, fits, and styles we choose can either support our well-being or quietly undermine it. Let’s explore how your wardrobe can become a tool for better health.

1. Protection: Clothing serves as your first line of defense against environmental hazards such as UV rays, cold temperatures, insect bites, allergens, and infections. High-quality, well-chosen garments safeguard your skin and help maintain good health.

2. Temperature Regulation: The right clothing helps your body adapt to changing conditions. Layering in cold weather prevents hypothermia, while breathable fabrics in hot climates reduce the risk of heat exhaustion.

3. Preventing Skin Conditions: Tight or non-breathable fabrics can trap sweat and bacteria, leading to irritation, allergies, acne, dermatitis, or yeast infections. Choosing breathable, natural materials promotes healthier skin.

4. Comfort and Mental Well-being: What you wear influences how you feel. Comfortable, well-fitting clothes boost confidence and reduce anxiety, while restrictive or ill-fitting garments can cause stress and discomfort.

5. Exercise Performance: Proper athletic wear enhances physical activity by managing sweat, reducing chafing, and supporting flexible movement. This not only improves performance but also lowers the risk of injury.

6. Posture and Musculoskeletal health: Clothing choices like high heels, heavy bags, or poorly fitted shoes can negatively affect posture and lead to long-term musculoskeletal problems. Supportive footwear and ergonomic accessories protect your joints and spine.

7. Sleep Quality: Nightwear matters more than you think. Loose, breathable fabrics encourage deeper, more restorative sleep, while restrictive or synthetic materials can disrupt rest.

8. Workplace Safety: In many professions, clothing is a critical safety tool. Fire-resistant fabrics, high-visibility gear, helmets, gloves, and steel-toe boots prevent injuries and protect workers in hazardous environments.

Clothing is not just about appearance — it’s a daily health choice. By weaving awareness into your wardrobe, you can protect your body, support your mind, and enhance your overall quality of life.
