H-PYLORI TEST: The Stomach Bacteria Test Many Don't Understand

You have treated ulcer 3 times and it keeps coming back? The problem might not be pepper or stress. It might be a bacteria called H-Pylori living in your stomach.

Let me break down the test in plain English.

WHAT IS H-PYLORI?
H-Pylori means Helicobacter pylori. It's a bacteria that lives in the stomach lining. It survives inside acid where other bacteria die. Over time, it can cause gastritis, ulcer, and constant stomach pain, bloating, and that burning sensation.

More than 50% of people in the world have it, many without symptoms.

WHY DO DOCTORS REQUEST H-PYLORI TEST?
If you have:
- Recurrent stomach ulcer
- Burning pain in your upper stomach especially when hungry
- Frequent bloating, nausea, belching
- Unexplained weight loss
- Family history of stomach ulcer/cancer

THE 4 TYPES OF H-PYLORI TEST:

1. H-Pylori Stool Test (Stool Antigen Test) - MOST COMMON
We check your stool for the bacteria. Very accurate for active infection.
Price: Usually affordable.

2. H-Pylori Blood Test
We check your blood for antibodies your body made against H-Pylori.
Problem: It can stay positive even after you have been treated, so it doesn't tell if you still have it now. We don't recommend it alone.

3. Urea Breath Test
You drink a special liquid and breathe into a bag. If H-Pylori is there, it breaks down the liquid and we see it in your breath. Very accurate, but not available everywhere.

4. Biopsy / Endoscopy Test
A camera is passed into your stomach and a small piece of tissue is taken. This is done when ulcer is severe or not healing.

For most people, stool test is the best.

HOW TO PREPARE SO YOUR RESULT IS NOT WRONG:

This is where many people get false results:

- Stop antibiotics 4 weeks before the test
- Stop omeprazole, esomeprazole, and other ulcer drugs (PPIs) 2 weeks before
- Stop Pepto-Bismol / bismuth 2 weeks before
- Do stool test early morning if possible

If you don't stop these drugs, you can get a false negative - the test will say you don't have it when you do.

HOW TO READ YOUR RESULT:

- Positive: You have an active H-Pylori infection now. See your doctor for treatment. Don't self-medicate.
- Negative: No active infection found. If symptoms continue, your doctor may check for other causes.
- Blood test positive: May mean old infection, not current. Always confirm with stool test.

TREATMENT:
It is NOT just one drug. Doctors usually use combination: 2 antibiotics + 1 acid reducer for 10-14 days. You must complete it. If you stop halfway, the bacteria becomes resistant and ulcer returns.

After treatment, you will need to repeat the stool test after 4 weeks to confirm it is gone.

HOW TO PREVENT REINFECTION:

- Wash hands properly, especially before eating
- Drink clean water
- Avoid sharing utensils, bottles with infected person
- Wash fruits and vegetables well

WHEN TO RUSH BACK TO HOSPITAL:

Vomiting blood, black stool, severe weight loss, difficulty swallowing.

Your H-Pylori can be treated and cleared, but only if you test properly and treat completely.

Have you ever done H-Pylori test before? What was your experience? Let's talk in comments.
