Most people don't think twice before setting fire on their plastic and textile wastes as they think that is the fastest way to get rid of it, some send it to the landfill without giving the waste a second chance to live but what they don't know is that such act pollute the environment.
Do you know that, about 90million tons of textile wastes are generarted annually all around the globe? and it takes over 200 years for textile wastes to degrade, plastic wastes on the other hand takes 20-300 years to degrade into micro plastic.
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that are less than 5 millimeters in size. They have become a significant environmental concern due to their widespread presence in oceans, rivers, soil and even the air we breathe.
✓The implications of the above is that, micro plastic has become a threat to aquatic organisms as toxicity or physical injury might occur from ingesting it. No wonder our once beautiful rivers are becoming eutrophicated.
✓Affects ecosystem and biodiversity.
✓Affects human health through the food chain.
But, we can do better by adopting these measures to help prevent or control these effects that are ravaging our society 👇👇
✓Reduce plastic use by minimizing single-use plastics and opt for reusable alternatives.
✓Implement effective waste management systems through recycling and up cycling to prevent plastic waste from entering the environment.
✓Improve wastewater treatment facilities to filter out microplastics.
✓ Advocate for policies and initiatives that aim to reduce plastic waste and microplastic pollution.
