President Buhari Passes Away.

Nigeria’s former leader Muhammadu Buhari (1983–85 military ruler; 2015–2023 democratically elected president) died on July 13 in London at age 82.

Key points:
• Served Nigeria for 8 years as civilian president
• Championed anti-corruption efforts
• Burial in Daura, Katsina (Islamic rites)
• National mourning declared (flags at half-mast)

And for those who are rejoicing at his passing, remember that death is not a punishment for wrongdoings or a reward for good deeds. If that were the case, the virtuous would not die. The reality is that all must face mortality eventually.

Rejoicing at the death of an 82-year-old man reflects poorly on one's character and values. Such a reaction speaks to the upbringing and principles of the individual expressing it.

For too long, one particular group of people has been a major obstacle to the progress of Nigeria. These people treat government positions as their birthrights and make themselves wealthy while the nation suffers.

The “Permanent Government Pikins” (PGP) depend on these privileges and government funds for survival. We need real change in this country where leaders know they are accountable for what they do and also that everyone can see what is happening at all times.

But I don’t think we should try anything too drastic just yet – maybe some small changes would work better first of all? I believe if there is going to be an African renaissance anywhere then why not start here with Nigeria? And why not let this happen peacefully by following the law and democracy.

In the current political climate, it is sad to see that many rich people and their followers are more concerned with what they can get for themselves than what is good for the country. If a nation is to do well, all of its inhabitants must cooperate and be united. This goes beyond any form of distinctions or selfish interests. We can only move forward if we stop fighting over unimportant issues and join forces towards achieving success as defined by everyone.

Peter Obi was the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 election in Nigeria. Recently, he gave a speech at Godfrey Okoye University. He said that the biggest threat to democracy in Nigeria is not the electoral commission that runs the elections. Instead, it is the judiciary (the system of courts and judges).
Obi explained that while there are still some excellent judges, the judicial system in Nigeria has declined a lot. He said justice often goes to the highest bidder - meaning the person who can pay the most money is more likely to get a favorable ruling from the courts. Justice has become "commodified" or treated like a product to buy and sell.

According to Obi, when the rule of law breaks down, it especially hurts the most vulnerable people in society. He emphasized how important it is to have an independent judiciary that upholds justice fairly for all. Competent, ethical judges with integrity are essential for upholding human rights and keeping order in the country.
Obi warned that Nigeria has become a place with no real rule of law, where anything goes because the judiciary is compromised. He called for revitalizing and reforming the judicial system as an urgent priority for building a better Nigeria.

In the 2023 presidential election, Bola Tinubu of the APC party won, followed by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP in second, and Peter Obi in third. Both Obi and Abubakar challenged the results in court, but the Supreme Court ultimately dismissed their appeals in October 2023, affirming Tinubu as the winner.

In a significant move aimed at providing Nigerians with affordable and cleaner fuel options, the federal government, acting through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has issued a directive to all filling stations nationwide to commence the sale of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This new order is set to take effect immediately, presenting Nigerian motorists with the opportunity to refuel their vehicles at remarkably low prices, potentially as little as N200.

This development brings with it a glimmer of hope that the long-standing challenges associated with fuel costs in the country may soon be alleviated. With the anticipated commencement of operations at the highly anticipated Dangote Refinery, there is a growing optimism that Nigerians will not only enjoy access to CNG at economical rates but also benefit from more affordable petrol prices in the near future.

The introduction of CNG as an alternative fuel source is a testament to the government's commitment to exploring innovative solutions that not only ease the financial burden on citizens but also promote environmental sustainability. As the nation continues to navigate the complexities of its energy landscape, initiatives such as this underscore the authorities' determination to prioritize the well-being of the populace and chart a course towards a more secure and eco-friendly energy future.
