THE METHODOLOGY AND SPIRITUALITY OF CHURCH INVITATION
Church invitation is an art. It is a vital component of increased membership. Hardly will there be increased membership without intentional invitation to church.
After we get a soul born again, the next step is to invite them to church. When they accept our invitation to come to church and begin to gather with us, membership grows and discipleship deepens.
There is both a methodology and a spirituality to church invitation. If you ignore the methodology of church invitation and remain unconscious of the spirituality of church invitation, you will not achieve the results you expect from the invitations you extend.
Evangelism and Church invitation must work hand in hand if we will experience increased church growth. Evangelism without church invitation is harvest that is not brought into the barn. Church invitation without evangelism is putting the cart before the horse.
We cannot use the methodology and spirituality of evangelism for church invitation. The methodology of evangelism states that we must keep soulwinning conversations brief and within the context of the gospel. The spirituality of evangelism is in the angelic ministry that is present with us during evangelism.
While there are diverse angels working with us (depending on our spiritual gifting) to bring a soul into the kingdom, there is a chief angelic ministry that works with every believer during evangelism irrespective of their spiritual gifting; this angel is called the angel of understanding.
The angel of understanding is responsible for opening the eyes of the man outside Christ to a degree that he can believe the gospel. Kindly note that the operation of understanding during evangelism is at the infant stage. The man outside Christ cannot understand the things of the Spirit (realities of the gospel) because he first needs the Spirit within to understand the gospel.
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
— 1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)
But through the operation of the angel of understanding, they are made to understand the gospel enough to believe it.
During discipleship, the angel of understanding works fully with the man in Christ to believe the gospel taught and do the gospel taught.
METHODOLOGY OF CHURCH INVITATION
During church invitation, our extended invitation must be impact-based. What this means is that you must tell the born again person about how church has impacted your life. You must tell them about how your pastor has impacted your life.
People follow people to churches because they desire the same benefit their host enjoys.
Consider the woman at the well. She went into the city and told the men of the city to follow her to see a man who told her everything she had ever done.
John 4 (KJV)
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
²⁸ The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
²⁹ Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
³⁰ Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
This was impact-based invitation. She didn't say, "Follow me to Jesus", she said "Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?" She shared the impact of her encounter with Jesus. She told them what happened to her when she met Jesus.
You must be intentional about telling people about how church and your pastor has impacted your life. That's the attraction point during church invitation.
Another example of impact-based invitation is seen in how Jesus called his disciples. Jesus didn't say to them "Follow me." He said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men."
Matthew 4 (KJV)
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
¹⁸ And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
¹⁹ And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
²⁰ And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
That was Jesus telling them what they stand to benefit should they follow him. He attached benefit to the call. He told them what they would become.
In the same way, when inviting people to church, tell them what they will gain. The benefit could be stability in faith, healing, clarity, community or direction.
Give them a promise of transformation, healing, or miracles. Sweaten the pot during church invitation.
Every good product or service marketing emphasizes benefits, not features.
Saying, “My pastor teaches well,” is feature based. Saying, “My pastor’s teaching transformed my understanding of righteousness and removed fear from my life,” is impact based.
Saying, “Our choir is great,” is feature based. Saying, “The worship in my church restored my joy and strengthened my faith,” is impact based.
Impact attracts.
SPIRITUALITY OF CHURCH INVITATION
Church invitation also has a spiritual dimension.
The spirituality of church invitation is in the angelic operation that is present with us when we invite people to church.
A chief angelic operation responsible for peoples' acceptance of your church invitation is the angel of favor.
The early church grew not only because they preached, but because they had favor with the people they got born again.
We know this because it was recorded in the scripture as a major reason people were added to the local church after they received eternal life.
“Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
— Acts 2:47 (KJV)
In between the evangelistic effort in Acts 2:46, and the numerical increase of the church in Acts 2:47, we see the operation of favour.
Favour is acceptance. It is the influence of God's Spirit upon the hearts of people that causes them to accept your invitation to Church.
The Christian who evangelizes and invites converts to church must recognize the ministry of the angel of favour.
Church invitation is warfare.
Have you ever had someone promise to come to church but fail to show up? Many times, there are spirits at work that seek to keep people away from environments where they will be established in truth.
These spirits know that if these people come to church, they will be established in the gospel of Christ, and they will learn to exercise dominion over them. So, they work hard to keep them from coming to church, especially a church that is given to the accurate teaching of God's word.
The angel that matches this warfare that seeks to keep people from the church inspite of invitations extended is the angel of favor.
When you invite a person to church, this angel causes his influence to come upon the person, and the person feels the need to come to church.
But the ministry of the angel of favour is effectual when the man in Christ is conscious of the presence and ministry of the angel.
Favour to the man in Christ is not a prayer point; it is a consciousness and a confession. The reason it is true is because we have been given angelic ministry in Christ Jesus.
“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,”
— Hebrews 12:22 (KJV)
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”
— 2 Peter 1:3 (KJV)
Consciousness of God's provision in the form of the presence of the angel of favour activates the ministry of the angel.
“That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”
— Philemon 1:6 (KJV)
While the angel of favor like other angels can manifest their ministries in our lives without our consciousness of them, awareness of angelic presence and ministry increases the manifestation of angelic ministry to us.
To the Christian walk, awareness is an instruction to angels to act. Ignorance is an instruction to angels to not get involved with our affairs.
The reason this is so is because ignorance will make us think and say the wrong things that inhibits angelic ministry.
If you are not conscious of the ministry of the angel of favour, you may find yourself doubting that the person you invited will come to church. That doubt is expressed ignorance of the effectual ministry of the angel of favour, and it is also an inhibitor of the ministry of the angel of favour.
Another consciousness that provokes the ministry of favour in our lives is the consciousness that you have favour with God in the gospel, and because of that, you have favor with people.
“To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”
— Ephesians 1:6 (KJV)
"Accepted in the beloved" is favour with God. This favour with God can cause you to have favor with men.
This is what the scripture records concerning the life of Jesus Christ.
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”
— Luke 2:52 (KJV)
Jesus had favour with man because he had favour with God.
It is just as it is for us with respect to righteousness. Because we are righteous before God, we can claim righteousness before men and spirits.
Because we stand before God through the gospel (I Corinthians 15:1) we can stand before men and spirits and even withstand evil men and evil spirits.
So, you can think of yourself as one who has favour with men and spirits because you have favour with God.
You can say to yourself that you have favour with men and spirits because you have favour with God.
I must state that the ministry of the angel of favour with us during church invitation does not mean that everyone we invite will come to church. There are those who are not ordained to be a part of your church family but another church family.
So, having done all that you need to do in using impact-based invitation and consciousness of the angel of favour, you should accept refusal to come to church on your invitation as divine orchestration to align that person with where they ought to be.
Refusal is not always resistance. Sometimes it is redirection.
I am persuaded that if we adopt the methodology of church invitation and the spirituality of church invitation, we will have more success in getting people to come to church on our invitation.
I call you blessed.
