Seize More Business Opportunities Through Follow-Up Mastery
Follow-up starts before you draft your message or before you have that meeting with a potential client…
Yea, you read that right.
And yes, you can put my name against that statement.
This whole concept occurred to me after working with a few start-up founders.
You know, we review the business structure, align the founder with the business and what have you…
And yet, the challenge still lingers:
Revenue is not coming up.
Then, like a bolt out of the blues, it dawned on me:
Follow-up should be more than an administrative chore. It should be a core business skill.
Follow-up is an art.
And just like a pencil drawing, you must be articulate in your approach.
If you start planning your follow-up strategy only after the meeting with a potential client, or after sending the mail or message, I am afraid you have missed a step—or mixed up the steps.
The strength of follow-up is in your ability to create a reason to call back or send another message from the very first conversation.
That is what makes you skillful at selling.
If your first call or mail “says it all” without carefully creating room for another conversation, you have just cut the conversation short.
Sales is a beautiful art of conversation where the last statement eagerly awaits the next response until a logical conclusion is reached.
And in sales, that conclusion is closing the deal.
But here is something important:
This works whether you are in B2B, B2C, B2G, C2C or D2C.
A good salesperson does not simply convince.
A good salesperson influences.
And this is not only for salespeople.
Whether you are a founder, entrepreneur, consultant, freelancer, professional or business owner, your ability to follow up can determine how many opportunities move from conversation to conversion.
So, if you are building a business, here is my advice:
Take your follow-up process away from administration and move it into your core business skills if you want your revenue to improve.
When you move follow-up from a daily administrative job to a core business skill, you begin to realize that follow-up is not just about getting an immediate sale.
It is about relationship cultivation.
And those relationships can produce repeat sales, referrals and opportunities that can take your entire organization to the next phase of impact.
Say it to yourself repeatedly until it sinks into your subconscious:
Follow-up is not just a daily administrative task.
It is a core business skill I must hone.
