Respectfully… can roadside tailoring sponsor the kind of life you are planning to live?

Not the life you are managing right now o. The life you actually want. The school fees. The rent. The car. The trips. The dignity of not borrowing before the 20th of every month.

Can the shop by the roadside with its #2,000 amendment and I go pay you later customers.

can that kind of business carry that life you’re dreaming of?

Answer it yourself and sincerely. Nobody is listening. You keep the answer to your heart!

if the answer is a NO, then something has to change. And the first thing that needs to change is not your location,

not your equipment,

not even your customers.

It is your orientation!

The skill in your hands is real. The problem is that skill alone has never built a business. It has only ever built a job, one where you are the only staff, the only machine, and the only asset.

Fashion entrepreneurship is a different road entirely. Although it is in Same industry but Completely different destination.

The question is are you ready to walk the fashion entrepreneurship journey?

Your fashion business is struggling?

Check the following things;

1. The product or service you offered.

Is your work neat?
Do you deliver what you promised?
Do you disappoint customers?
Do they have any complaints.

2. Your pricing. Your price may be too small or high. Any of the cases would chase your customers away. There was a day my customer referred somebody to me, The person chatted to make an inquiry about my pricing, I gave the person one ridiculously cheap price 😁 he asked if I was sure sure and I said YES. He said he would get back to me. Going to 4yrs without him getting back.

Why? Just like Most Nigerian tailors, I was pricing for that day’s bills instead of tomorrow's growth.. I had to change my pricing.

3. Another thing you should check is your marketing effort. Start with your Facebook, instagram and WhatsApp stories. Share your stories, customers review and how your customers feel after wearing your outfits. Build trust.

Are you a tailor?

Which out of these is affecting your business?

If not for anything, the fear of poverty should be the most important motivation to wake you every morning and do the most important thing in your life.

PART 5: MUST READ FOR ALL TAILORS

Whenever I see posts by tailors on why they’ve never seen a rich tailor, it made me laugh and shock my head.

Tailors can’t be rich o.

Never!

Though as a tailor, you can be comfortable. Don’t mix it, Tailors and fashion entrepreneurs are different.

Tailors are ORDINARY WORKERS. THEY SIT MOSTLY BEHIND THE MACHINES.

Tailoring you learnt is like a platform, just like Facebook, Instagram and other platforms, if they didn’t create products and monetized they will be frustrated and wind up.

You need to think about how to create products people are willing to buy.

I mean, Chose and kill products That customers can point their fingers and say; yes! I want that one! It may be readymade garments, it may be teaching apprentices, it may be renting your machines to fellow tailors, it may be bespoke making, bedsheet making, apron making, boxer making, socks or hand glove making etc. The list is long! Think! Exercise your brain!

It is not only about the tailoring you learnt, ibut also what you make out of the tailoring. Skill you keep in your brain is like money you kept in bank, the worst is to be decreasing with unnecessary charges from the banks.

Let me burst your brain, do you know as a fashion entrepreneurs, you are entitled to several grants set aside for creative industry stakeholders?

* Yes! free money to train apprentices and create more jobs.

* Free money to make clothes for orphans as an (NGO owner)

* Free money to provide empowerment for fellow tailors

Do you know it exist?

Do you know you can start a fashion business that sew and sell Only boxers?

You think it is not possible?

I’m looking at a day we’ll organize a month PAID intensive training on fashion entrepreneurship. It’ll include A-Z from ideal generation to business management.

Learn to limit the time you spent behind your machine!

I’ve been LANRE see you next time 😊

IF YOU ARE A TAILOR AND WANT TO BECOME A FASHION ENTREPRENEUR, YOU NEED TO READ THIS.

We all know well, you may not know that tailors who passed through apprenticeship system are train to cut, join and measure as workers only. Read it again, workers only. It may be low, mid or high level worker but they are all trained to work under fashion entrepreneurs with ideas.

Becoming an entrepreneur is never a switch, it is a process that hundreds of millions of people do start but a few tens continue. Unfortunately, there is no end point.

WHAT IS FASHION DESIGNS?

Fashion is a word that encompasses different aspects of our lives, fashion do not only mean clothing we wear, but also include the perfume we use, wristwatch we wear, un**es, shoes, earrings, caps, veils, creams, jewelleries and so on. Anything we put on is categorized under fashion. That’s why you see most big fashion brands are selling almost all what I mentioned above.

You too can be like themselves , you just need to have a shift of mindset.

WHO IS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

An entrepreneur is one who provides sellable solution at a price people are willing to pay.

WHO IS THEN A FASHION ENTREPRENEUR?

A fashion entrepreneur is one who provide fashion items as a form of value and solution to people at a price they are willing to pay

If we go back to business study or economics back in secondary schools, we were told the basic necessities for the survival of human being which are; Food, shelter and clothing!

Clothing is where we tailors come in, which means as the world continues to exist people will still need us. Unfortunately, if you don’t develop yourself, people may no longer need you or your service. And you become poor like your boss and his/her bosses. That’s the fact!

Before you call yourself a clothing entrepreneur you have 3 important tasks to do;

1. Unlearn all the myth(wrong beliefs) you have about fashion. It includes How tailoring is handwork, how no one can become rich with tailoring, how no one can afford luxury items with tailoring and so on.

2. Learn the forms of value of fashion business (discus later) if you know and apply it, you will be rich even with your village people following you.

3. Relearn new information: this is inform of personal development (it include business books, YouTube videos on “how to”, mentoring from those who are bigger than you and so on.

Once you can do all these, You would gradually start having the mindset of an entrepreneur and business man.

If you learn handwork and want to become an entrepreneur you need to understand how economy work, how value turn to money and how money become more money. Understand these, you must have knowledge of two things which are:

1. Forms of Value
2. Business processes.

Value are what entrepreneurs create that they get paid for. Look at anything around you, you bought it because you need the value of that thing. From mobile phone, television, power bank, tape rule, chalk, scissors, biro, machines and so on. We bought all these things because we needed its values.

As a tailor transiting to fashion entrepreneur, Understanding these forms of value will give you an edge to identify several hundred of other businesses in fashion industry different from sitting behind your machines every time.

According to JOSH KAUFMAN, there are 12 forms of value and few of it are;

a. Product
b. Service
c. Lease
d. Resale
E. Agency
f. Audience aggregate
g. Loan and so on.

As I said earlier, it’ll be a long journey and only the strong can continue.

Let’s stop here today till tomorrow

CLARITY: THE REAL REASONS WHY MOST TAILORS ARE STRUGGLING TO GET CUSTOMERS AND MAKE SALES

I have a colleague we did apprenticeship together. he had a freedom before me and had a very good starting. He grew his workshop to about 6 manual machines. That was a big win in my area back then.

All of a sudden, his customer base and sale start winding down and began to have financial crisis. I did freedom many years after and launched my brand in 2016, incorporated it in 2020. I was able to grow to couple of manuals, industrial and semi sophisticated machines workshop.

My Guy came to me one day and demanded that “I cut soap for him” means “show me the way” in Nigerian parlance.

I laughed and told him; No soap anywhere. The only soap is the approach we use to handle our businesses.

I said, You are a tailor and Trying to assume the role of a fashion entrepreneur, it won’t work! He was shocked and surprised that there are different between the two.

This is exactly what is happening to most of the tailors who passed through apprenticeship system.

All handwork and skills we learnt have technical and business sides. While our bosses are very good in technical but mostly lack business knowledge.

It is no one’s fault, just that you are trying to assume the role you know nothing about.

Have you ever ask yourself these questions

Why do tailors who went for rigorous apprenticeship are still struggling but those entrepreneurs who don’t know much about technical are the ones getting rich in the industry?

WHO IS A TAILOR?

A tailor is the one who measures, cuts and joins fabrics in the workshop. Though, somebody must bring fabric for tailors. It may be customers or the owner of the fashion house.

A fashion entrepreneur is the one who solve people’s clothing problem. He or she inspire people by creating artistic styles, market it, sell, distribute and making TRACKABLE profits out of it.

The above statement lead us to what I call CLARITY.

Now that you know the difference,

Are you a tailor or a fashion entrepreneur?

You still don’t get it?

It is possible for a tailor to become a fashion entrepreneur?

Let’s continue From here tomorrow
