My experience with a little boy yesterday
It was late afternoon yesterday and I stepped out to buy airtime when I noticed a young boy, maybe 9 years old, sitting by the corner of a small kiosk with a basin of fresh okra.
He wasn’t shouting or calling for buyers — just sitting quietly, using a stick to draw lines in the sand. I passed him at first, but something tugged at me. I turned back.
Me: Hello, what’s your name?
Boy: Ayo ma
Me: You’re selling okra?
Boy: Yes ma. My sister gave me to sell before evening.
I looked into the basin — fresh, clean okra. But it was a lot.
Me: How much for all of it?
Boy: ₦600
₦600 for a whole basin? I was shocked. That’s easily over ₦1,500 in the market. But I realized immediately: they probably harvested it themselves from a backyard garden.
Me: You’ve not sold any today?
Boy: No ma. People say they don’t want okra today.
It was almost sunset. I imagined his sister getting upset if he went home with unsold okra.
Me: Okay. Bring a bag.
Boy: I don’t have any ma.
So I walked into the nearest shop, bought a nylon bag for ₦100, and packed everything in.
He kept looking at me with disbelief.
Boy: Are you really buying everything?
Me: Yes. Go home. You’ve tried.
He said thank you about five times and dashed off with a huge grin on his face, swinging the empty basin. I walked home smiling too, even though I was already thinking, What will I do with all this okra? 😂
Kindness doesn’t have to be grand.
Sometimes, just noticing someone’s struggle and stepping in — even for a moment — makes all the difference. 💛
Show me kindness too by buying one or two of my product
