How to Calculate the Square Meter of Your Roof
One of the most common questions homeowners ask before roofing is, "How many square meters is my roof?"
Knowing your roof area helps you estimate the quantity of roofing sheets, timber, insulation, screws, accessories, and labour cost. It also helps you prepare a more accurate budget.
Step 1: Measure the Roof Length
Measure the distance from one end of the roof to the other.
Example:
Length = 18 m
# # Step 2: Measure the Roof Width (Slope Length)
Measure along the slope of the roof, not the building width on the ground.
Example:
Width = 8 m
Step 3: Calculate the Roof Area
The basic formula is:
Roof Area = Length × Width
Example:
Length = 18 m
Width = 8 m
Roof Area = 18 × 8 = 144 m²
Therefore, your roof area is 144 square metres.
For Gable Roofs
If the roof has two equal slopes:
- Measure one side.
- Calculate its area.
- Multiply the result by 2.
Example:
One roof slope = 72 m²
Total roof area = 72 × 2 = 144 m²
For Hip Roofs
Hip roofs are made up of several sections.
Calculate the area of each section separately and add them together to obtain the total roof area.
Don't Forget the Roof Overhang
The roof usually extends beyond the walls.
Always include the overhang when taking measurements because it affects the quantity of roofing materials required.
Why Roof Area Matters
Calculating your roof area helps estimate:
- Roofing sheets
- Timber
- Nails and screws
- Ridge caps
- Insulation materials
- Labour cost
- Overall roofing budget
Engineering Tip
Do not estimate roofing materials using only the floor area of the building. The roof pitch, overhang, valleys, and roof design all affect the actual roof area. Proper measurement helps prevent material shortages, unnecessary waste, and unexpected costs.
