• The History & Origins Of Halloween •
🎃 The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would wear costumes to ward of ghosts as the veil was thin at this time.
🎃 Celts believed that this day marked the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of the dark cold winter, a time associated with death where the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and spirits returned to the earth.
🎃 It was thought that the presence of otherworldly spirits made it easier for druids and priests to make predictions about the future, and for a people entirely dependent on the natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and solace during the long dark winter.
🎃 To commemorate the event, huge sacred bonfires were built and people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to sacred dieties. Costumes were worn and people attempted to tell each others fortunes.
🎃 When the celebration was over, the people lit their hearth fires to help protect them from the oncoming winter.
