Happy Heavenly Birthday, Dad
There’s an empty chair at the table today, but heaven feels a little fuller.
I still hear you in the little things
The way you taught me to plant seeds with hands bigger than mine,
How you’d hum your choir songs on-key while fixing anything broken,
And those slow Sunday mornings when your laugh filled the whole house before the aroma of gwate did.
You measured love in actions, not words:
Waiting up until I got home safe,
Slipping me extra tasks sheets and prayer point with a wink,
Saying “I’m proud of you” like it was the most natural sentence in the world.
The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, is the only thing that holds me together today. Because some days the weight of missing you doesn’t make sense. But I know you’re celebrating where time doesn’t hurt.
So today I’ll light a candle, play your favorite song, and tell of your heroic deeds to my boys like you’re still here nodding along.
I miss you in ways words can’t carry, Dad.
Happy birthday up there. Save me a hug for when I see you again.
Love,
Your son Dahwei Jonathan John Choji
