📍 Context in National Security

Nigeria’s forests have increasingly been used as hideouts by armed groups (including bandits and terrorists), making security in these areas a national concern. The idea behind structures like the NFSS programmes is to provide a specialised, ground-level presence that complements conventional security forces and improves safety in underserved regions.

27/01/2026

The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) is an emerging security organisation in Nigeria focused on safeguarding the country’s forests, combating crime in rural and forested areas, and supporting national security efforts. It evolved from earlier community-based hunter groups and has been gaining prominence in the national security architecture.
