⚖️ DOCTRINE OF LAST SEEN: Explained Simply and clearly💯

Imagine this scenario:
Two people (both alive) are last seen together 👥
Later, one is found dead under suspicious circumstances 💔
No eyewitness. No weapon recovered. No CCTV.

Now, the person who was last seen with the deceased has be convicted of murder!
How is that possible?

This is where the “Doctrine of Last Seen” comes in.

What does it mean?
The law is that:
If you were the LAST PERSON seen with someone who was still alive 👀
And shortly after, that person is found dead (especially in suspicious circumstances),
The burden shifts to YOU to explain what happened.

If you cannot give a reasonable and believable explanation,
The court may presume that YOU are responsible for the death.

This doctrine has been applied in many Nigerian cases, such as :
Igabele v. State
Adeniji v. State
And several other Supreme Court decisions.

But you can defend yourself by showing:
✅ The deceased died of natural causes (E.g heart attack with medical evidence ooo
✅ Someone else had access to the person after you left
✅ You had no involvement in the death at all

Key lesson:
Being the “last person seen” with someone who later dies suspiciously puts you in a very serious position.
Silence or a weak explanation can lead to conviction, even life imprisonment or death sentence.

I pray you never find yourself in this kind of position oo, cause it’s always very hard to prove you know nothing about the death. But if such happen :
1️⃣The first thing is to rush the person to a nearby hospital if they can still survive it.
2️⃣Report to the nearest police station immediately and explain what happened or what you know.
3️⃣Third, get a very good criminal lawyer. This is very important oo. Don’t speak further without one.

Every evening, answer emergency questions (so you won’t freeze if asked suddenly).

🔻Record Your Voice Once a Week

Choose a short topic like “What is Law?” or “The importance of justice.”

Record yourself for 1–2 minutes.

Listen to improve clarity and confidence.

🔻Add Real-Life Practice

In class, volunteer to answer at least one question per week.

In church/mosque, student group, or family, practice a short speech confidently.
