*2026 RAINY SEASON OVERALL WHETHER FORECAST*

The 2026 rainy season in Nigeria, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), is characterized by variable rainfall amounts, early-to-normal onsets, and pockets of severe mid-season dry spells. Nationwide temperatures are expected to be warmer than normal, with extreme heat experienced in the North.

*Key Regional Breakdown*

1. *Southern Nigeria* : Rainfall onset began early (late February to March), and total seasonal rainfall is predicted to be normal to above-normal. The Little Dry Season ("August Break") is expected to be severe and prolonged in coastal states like Lagos, Ogun, and parts of Oyo, lasting between 28 and 40 days. Rains in this region will likely extend into December.
2. *Central & Middle Belt States* : Rainfall onset will be early-to-normal, though farmers are warned against a "false onset"—early showers that might not be sustained. This region will experience frequent thunderstorms and risks prolonged mid-season dry spells.
3. *Northern Nigeria* : Onset is projected to be normal, although Borno State and a few other areas may experience a delayed start. Rainfall is expected to end in October. Dry spells during the peak growing months (June–August) pose a risk to crops.

*Crucial Advisories*

1. *Agriculture* : Farmers are advised to wait for consistent soil moisture rather than planting immediately after the first rains to avoid seed loss from false onsets.
2. *Public Health* : Increased vigilance is advised for malaria in the South and meningitis in the North due to elevated heat and humidity levels.
3. *Infrastructure* : Coastal and urban centers should ensure proper drainage systems are cleared to prevent flash flooding during peak storm periods.

*Plan smart and farm smart*
