Business Survival Tips for Entrepreneurs in Tough Times. We all know the economy may be uncertain, but your drive as an entrepreneur should remain strong!

Here are a few tips to help navigate these challenging times:

1. Diversify what you offer: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Explore new products or services that meet current demands. Add other things to your business that people need.

2. Focus on retaining old customers : It’s cheaper to keep a customer than acquire a new one.

3. Offer loyalty programs or special discounts to keep them coming back. For example customers who spend N100k get N500 off their purchase etc .

4. Leverage Digital Marketing: With more people online, social media is a cost-effective way to reach your audience. Stay visible! It's not a time to be shy. Things have changed.

5. Cut Unnecessary Costs: Audit your expenses. Prioritize essentials and eliminate waste. Every saved penny counts. If you need to reduce your staff, reduce electricity usage, packaging items etc

6. Collaborate and Partner: Find like-minded businesses to collaborate with to help both parties grow. No need for unhealthy competition. If a customer asks for something you don't, quickly get from someone who has and add to your own.

7.Keep Innovating: Tough times demand creative solutions. Adapt your business model where needed to stay relevant.

You should also consider the kind of product you sell, some product are highly competitive and may require you reduce the profit margin to 20 or 25 percent especially fast moving consumer products like groceries.

GOOD CHARACTER vs SKILL

During a recent interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with a young intelligent lady. As we delved into her work experiences, I asked her about her previous employers, and I noticed she frequently used the phrase "you get", "you get", "you get" and kept portraying a bad image of her previous employers and their work relationship. To put her at ease and better understand her character, I created a relaxed atmosphere during our conversation.

In less than 15 minutes, my intuition led me to a decision. For me, character holds immense importance, and it remains a key factor in any evaluation.

Character and skill are inseparable. A doctor may possess exceptional expertise, but without good character, the consequences could be severe – For example, he might leave some patients psychological disturbed. Have you met doctors that subtly body shame their patients?

So, I believe in blending good character with skill and skill with good character. It's the harmonious interplay of these attributes that can lead to true excellence.

So please if you have a great character, kindly develop adequate knowledge and skill about your job. It's rare to find these days!

The cumulative effect of various taxes, levies, exorbitant bank charges and high operational costs already put significant pressure on businesses, making it challenging to thrive and remain competitive. I can't imagine paying penalties for late remittance.

You do not need the pay VAT on the following items as a business person
1. Basic food items ( cooked food by restaurants are not included)
2. Baby products
3. Medical products
4. Educational materials

A lot of business owners are usually scared of tax officials. You need not be. You can actually learn from them so you don't incur huge penalties.

I advice startups to ensure they have adequate knowledge of registration, documents,taxes and levies required of them when setting up their business so your ignorance is not taken advantage of.

Dear Business Owner, if you do not put the right systems in place. Your employees and customers will dictate how you run your business.
It is important to have laid down policies, practices and procedures for all to follow even when you are not there.

I have had my share of employee palava and I can tell you it's extremely frustrating. If it's not theft today, it's non-chalant attitude towards work tomorrow.
