Knowing a digital skill is one thing. Knowing how to turn it into value people will pay for is another.

You can complete a course in digital marketing, social media management, content creation or research, but the real question is: Can you demonstrate what you know? Businesses need people who can solve problems, execute ideas, and drive meaningful outcomes. A certificate may show what you’ve learned, but a portfolio, a well-executed project or a practical campaign gives people something tangible to evaluate.

That’s why the journey goes beyond learning. Build your capability, practise with real projects, document your work and learn to communicate the value you bring. Whether you want employment, freelancing opportunities, agency experience or to build something of your own, evidence of what you can do makes your skills easier to recognise and trust.

This is the thinking behind the Blitz SMA Free Digital Skills Cohort: 2 weeks, 10 training days and 100% free. It’s a starting point to learn, practise and begin building proof of your capabilities. Your next opportunity may start with a skill you haven’t learned yet.

Your competitor just reduced their price. Should you panic, adjust your price, or rethink your strategy?

Before you slash your prices, ask yourself one important question: Did customers really choose your competitor because of price? Perhaps they offer better convenience, communicate their value more clearly, have stronger customer relationships, or make their offer easier to understand. Competing on price without understanding what drives your customers’ decisions could turn your business into a race to the bottom.

Your competitor’s pricing is information, not an instruction. Study your market, understand what your customers value, and identify what makes your offer worth paying for. If you can communicate and deliver a stronger value proposition, you may not need to be the cheapest option to win.

The goal isn’t to charge less than your competitor. It’s to give customers a compelling reason to choose you.

A post can reach 100,000 people and still do almost nothing for the business.

Reach and views tell you how many people saw your content. Conversion rate tells you how many people actually took the action that mattered, whether that is signing up, making a purchase, booking a call, sending an enquiry, or becoming a lead. And that difference is where marketing starts becoming business growth.

Imagine two businesses. One gets 50,000 views and 20 enquiries. Another gets 5,000 views and 100 enquiries. Which one would you rather be? The answer is not automatically the one with more views. Attention is valuable, but action is what moves the business forward.

That is why we should stop asking only, “How many people saw this?” and start asking, “What did they do after seeing it?” Good marketing does not just win attention. It moves the right people closer to becoming customers. Views can make a report look good. Conversion tells you whether the marketing is actually working.

There is a strange trap in learning today: the more skills you see, the more you feel you need to learn.

So you learn digital marketing. Then AI. Then copywriting. Then graphic design. Then video editing. Then another course appears, and suddenly the goal is no longer becoming useful. It is simply collecting skills.

But a skill becomes valuable when it moves from your notes into your work. Can you use it to solve a real problem? Can you make something with it? Can it help you save time, make better decisions, serve a customer, grow a business or create an opportunity? If the answer is no, you may have learned something, but you haven’t necessarily built capability.

At Blitz SMA, this is something we think about constantly. The goal isn’t to know everything. It is to become useful. Sometimes one skill that you can confidently apply is worth far more than ten skills you can only talk about.

So before signing up for the next course, ask yourself: “What will I actually do with this skill once I learn it?”

The last 60 days have taught us something we keep coming back to at Blitz SMA: good marketing starts with asking better questions.

Over the past few weeks, we've looked beyond “what should we post?” and thought more deeply about positioning, customer journeys, retention, growth, and the role content actually plays in a business. One lesson keeps standing out: every piece of marketing should have a job. If you cannot explain what that job is, more content will not necessarily solve the problem.

Take creator marketing. It is easy to look at a campaign and think, “We need more creators.” But more creators can simply mean more people saying different versions of the same thing. What if one creator’s job was to create awareness, another to build trust, and another to give the audience a reason to take action? Suddenly, the strategy becomes much clearer.

That is probably one of our biggest takeaways from the last 60 days: marketing gets stronger when we stop thinking only about activity and start thinking about outcomes. We’re still learning, testing and refining, but that shift in how we think has changed the questions we ask before we create anything. And honestly, we think that’s where better marketing begins.

If someone came to Blitz SMA and said, “We’re launching a brand new food delivery app in Nigeria. Get people to use it,” we wouldn’t start with a content calendar.

We’d start with the market. Who are we trying to win first? Busy professionals? Students? Families? Restaurants? What problem are we solving better than the alternatives? “We deliver food” describes the service, not a reason to switch apps.

Then we’d build the launch around the customer journey: awareness → consideration → first order → experience → second order → habit. Messaging, creators, offers, content, paid media, and partnerships would each have a job. We would test what actually moves people from seeing the app to downloading it, ordering, and eventually coming back.

And that’s the difference between launching an app and launching a growth strategy. The goal isn’t to make Nigeria hear about the app for one week. It’s to give the right customers a reason to try it, a reason to trust it, and an experience worth repeating. Downloads are a starting point. Sustainable usage is the real marketing challenge.

A strong brand is not just something that looks good. It is something people can recognise, understand, remember and trust.

Poor branding can quietly make an expensive business look cheap, confuse customers about what it actually offers, or make a great product seem less credible than it deserves. And no, the problem is not always the logo. Your messaging, visual identity, customer experience, consistency, and even how your business presents its value all shape the picture people form in their minds.

Think about it this way: every customer interaction is adding another sentence to your brand story. If your website says one thing, your social media says another, your visuals feel inconsistent and your customer experience tells a completely different story, people have to work too hard to understand you. Confusion is expensive.

So before asking, “Does my brand look good?”, ask a better question: “Does my brand communicate what I want the right customer to believe about my business?” Because great branding is not decoration. It is clarity, consistency and meaning working together.

If a fintech handed Blitz SMA ₦500,000 and said, “Go and market us,” we wouldn’t start by boosting a post and hoping the algorithm does the rest.

First, we’d ask a more important question: what are we trying to make happen? For a fintech, the answer could be awareness, qualified sign-ups, active users, deposits, transactions or retention. The objective determines where the ₦500,000 goes. We would then build the campaign around the customer journey, not simply around how many people we can reach.

A possible approach could be to divide the budget across customer acquisition, content and education, testing, and retargeting, while tracking metrics such as cost per qualified acquisition, activation and retention. If one audience or message is producing cheaper but inactive users, we don’t keep spending just because the numbers look good. We investigate what is happening after the sign-up and move the budget toward what is actually creating value.

Because fintech marketing is ultimately a trust game. People are not just deciding whether they like your advert. They are deciding whether they are comfortable putting their money, information and financial decisions in your hands. So with ₦500,000, the goal wouldn’t be to simply spend ₦500,000 on attention. The goal would be to turn ₦500,000 into measurable customer movement, learn what works, and use those insights to make the next ₦500,000 smarter.

A growth opportunity hides in a place many businesses overlook: the customers they already paid to acquire.

We’re often obsessed with the next campaign, the next ad, the next influencer and the next batch of leads. But what happened to the people who already bought from you? Did they have a good experience? Did you follow up? Did you give them a reason to return? Did you learn enough about them to serve them better?

Your existing customers already know your brand, your product has already passed the first test, and a relationship already exists. That doesn’t mean they will automatically buy again. Still, it does mean you have valuable insight and an opportunity to build on an existing relationship rather than constantly starting from zero.

Before you spend more money looking for your next 100 customers, look closely at the 100 you already have. Growth isn’t always about filling the bucket faster. Sometimes, it’s about finding the holes that are making your customers walk away.
