How to Keep your Poultry 🐓 Farm Free Flocks From Diseases ( Biosecurity).

Biosecurity refers to procedure use to prevent introduction and spread of diseases causing organisms in poultry flocks.

How to stop disease spreading :

The following procedures won't stop diseases getting into farm, but they will stop them spreading and reduce their severity.:

✅️ Ensure all birds are correctly vaccinated and medicated.
✅️Have one age of bird per farm.
✅️Use all-in all-out sheds.
✅️Dispose of dead bird properly.

Disease Of Poultry.

The two most serious poultry diseases that must be kept out of Poultry flocks are Newcastle disease and Avian Influenza.

Diseases Which Are Control By Vaccine Include :

• Fowl Pox.
• Fowl Cholera.
• Newcastle Disease.
• Coryza.
• Chronic Respiratory Disease.
• Infectious laryngotracheitis.
•Egg Drop Syndrome 76 ( EDS 76) .
•Infection Bronchitis.
Avian Encephalomyelitis.

How To Keep Disease Out :

Some Disease can be control by both vaccine and keeping them out of Farm.
Disease can enter your farm via Carrier bird, people, Wild bird, Day old Chicken, Equipment, Wind, pets, and Insects.

✅️Bird.

Apparently healthy birds carrying a Disease organism can be a source of Infection of other birds.

✅️Prevention.

Do not keep any Backyard, aviary, show bird, or other birds such as emus on commercial Poultry Farm.

✅️People.

People are the second most most common carrier of poultry diseases. Disease can be carried by footwear, hands, clothings. Visitors from over seas could spread exotic diseases. Poultry producer, family, staffs can bring disease back to farm.

✅️Prevention.

Do not allow people into your farm unless they have essential task to perform. To safeguard the health of your flocks, make sure that contract work crew, service people and Veterinarians who enter shed take stringent precaution such as washing their hands and changing their overalls and shoe's before entering your poultry pen.

HOW TO CUT DOWN MORTALITY RATE.

Cutting down mortality in poultry farming is very important because once birds start dying, profit starts reducing. If you are raising broilers, you must understand that preventing death is easier and cheaper than treating disease. It all starts from buying good quality chicks. Always get your chicks from a trusted hatchery and make sure they are active, bright, and evenly sized. Weak or dull chicks from day one can increase mortality no matter how well you manage them later.

Before the chicks arrive, your brooder must be completely ready. The pen should be properly washed and disinfected, and the litter must be dry. Temperature is very important during the first seven days. If chicks are cold, they will gather together and pile up, which can cause suffocation and death. If they are too hot, they become weak and dehydrated. Feed and clean water should already be available before they enter the pen. The first week of life determines how well the birds will survive and grow.

Your daily routine also plays a big role in reducing mortality. Every morning, check the birds carefully before feeding them. Look for signs of weakness or dullness, observe their droppings, check the litter condition, and confirm that the temperature and ventilation are okay. Early detection of problems can save many birds. Clean water is very important because dirty water can cause diarrhea, bacterial infections, and sudden death. Drinkers should be washed daily, and vitamins or electrolytes can be added during periods of stress.

Wet litter is another major cause of death in poultry farms. When litter becomes wet and produces a strong ammonia smell, it can lead to respiratory problems and diseases like coccidiosis. Good ventilation and regular litter management will help prevent this. Vaccination should never be skipped because it protects the birds from serious diseases such as Newcastle and Gumboro. It is always cheaper to vaccinate than to lose birds.

COMMON CHICKEN DISEASES
DETAILED IDENTIFICATION, DIFFERENTIATION, AND VETERINARY CONTROL

Many chicken diseases show similar signs such as diarrhoea, coughing, weakness, or death. This often leads farmers to confuse diseases and apply the wrong treatment. The key to successful disease control is knowing the unique signs and how to separate one disease from another with similar symptoms.

This guide explains the most important chicken diseases affecting village chickens, broilers, and layers, with extra detail on how to tell them apart

NEWCASTLE DISEASE

This is the most serious and widespread poultry disease in Zambia.

Main identifying signs:
Sudden death of many birds at once
Green watery diarrhoea
Twisted neck (neck turning backward or sideways)
Paralysis of wings or legs
Coughing, sneezing, gasping
Sharp drop in egg production

How to distinguish Newcastle from similar diseases:
Newcastle vs Marek’s disease
Both can cause paralysis, but Newcastle causes sudden outbreaks, green diarrhoea, and respiratory signs. Marek’s develops slowly and does not cause diarrhoea or coughing.

Newcastle vs Infectious Coryza
Coryza causes facial swelling and bad-smelling discharge, but does not cause twisted necks or green diarrhoea.

Newcastle vs Avian Influenza
Both cause sudden deaths, but influenza often causes swelling of the head and bleeding, while Newcastle commonly shows twisted necks.

Treatment:
No cure. Antibiotics only control secondary infections.

Prevention:
Vaccination and strict biosecurity.

INFECTIOUS BURSAL DISEASE (GUMBORO)

This disease weakens the immune system and mainly affects young birds.

Main identifying signs:
Occurs at 3–6 weeks of age
Watery diarrhoea
Vent pasted with faeces
Weakness and trembling
Ruffled feathers
Birds pecking their own vents

How to distinguish Gumboro from similar diseases:
Gumboro vs Coccidiosis
Coccidiosis causes bloody diarrhoea. Gumboro causes watery (not bloody) diarrhoea and occurs strictly in young birds.
