SITREP
Earlier today, Wednesday, 15th January 2025, at approximately 1030hrs, while passing through Adeshina Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos, I encountered a 10-year-old boy named Jeremiah, a native of Akwa Ibom, hawking plantain chips. Observing his demeanor and situation, it was evident that he needed urgent assistance.
I approached him for a conversation, during which he disclosed a troubling story. Jeremiah was brought to Lagos under the guise of being enrolled in school to continue his education. However, upon arrival, the woman who facilitated his relocation sold him to another individual, who has since subjected him to child labor and frequent bullying.
In response, I immediately reported the case at the Ijeshatedo Police Station for a thorough investigation. I extend my gratitude to the Officer-in-Charge of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Itire-Ikate, for his swift response, which ensured Jeremiah's safety before the arrival of the police.
This incident underscores the urgency of addressing the prevalent issues of child trafficking, labor, and abuse in our society. I appeal to the general public to join hands with the government to eradicate these inhumane practices. Every child deserves the right to education, protection, and a life free from exploitation. Let us ensure that no child is forced to hawk during school hours or endure the hardship of staying out of school.
