We were working through brand values with a client recently. Not the polished kind that live on a wall somewhere. The real kind, the ones that have to hold up when a job is complicated and the margin is thin.
At some point in that conversation, we landed on something I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.
In their industry, most competitors do exactly what was agreed. They deliver, they invoice, they move on. But the companies that keep winning aren’t doing that. They’re doing more than was asked, not to impress anyone, but because they genuinely respect the person on the other side of the work.
That respect shows up as excellence. In the quality of the finish. In the report that was clearer than it needed to be. In the follow-up that came before anyone thought to ask.
And here’s the thing: customers feel it, even when they can’t name it.
They also feel the opposite. The email with the wrong name. The product that works but was clearly never thought about beyond “working.” Those small signals add up too, and what they say is: we don’t really see you.
Excellence is a form of respect. And in a market where most brands are doing the minimum, it’s one of the most powerful things you can offer.
What does excellence look like in your business, in the details most people don’t notice?
