Lamentations of A School Boy

How would you rate the education you received from your primary to tertiary level? Was your capacity fully utilized in school? What would you improve on if you could?

My struggle with education started right from primary school (Youngsters Nursury&Primary) I never really did fit in largely down to the fact that I was not a brilliant student of maths and struggled to solve what some teachers will consider simple, which of course was (and is) a major yardstick for performance.

For me the struggle went a new level in secondary school, now it was not only maths; it became maths and a couple of other subjects, I constantly had to compare with other classmates who got better grades and we're seemingly more 'sharper'.

If you don't know maths, automatically you're dull so the brilliant ones were those who knew maths, physics, chemistry, etc. The basis for 'excellence' was basically how smart, intelligent or likable you were.

Looking back at those periods, I never really fitted into the educational system, it didn't exactly catch my interest despite my mother being a teacher in that same school and my father an avid advocate for education.

Did I dislike education? Absolutely not! but I somehow did not fit the system, I never felt at home. It was not all doom though, I mean I got to make friends and beautiful experiences so it couldn't have been all doom.

The same experience came up in the University, at this point, you may be asking 'what is wrong with you?' Well maybe I could have and should have done better but we can't overlook the fact that there is something fundamentally wrong with the school system.

Imagine a football manager using the same techniques and methods to coach his players; goalkeeper, defenders, and attackers what would happen? This is exactly what the school system does, it gathers 50 (in many cases 80+) students with different capacity, interests, and experiences and teaches them the same things; those who manage to hack it are the brilliant ones while those who don't hack it are the dull ones.

Given my experience and those of many others I've heard and read, this system has been a disaster so far and will continue to be.

Is there a better system that would serve the interest and capacity of the individual? How do we as individuals (and subsequently as a people) use education as a tool for advancement? This and more is what Daramola, an educational consultant wants to share with us.

Share your experience of the school system let's reason together.

Make 2020 Your Year

The year 2020 has arguably been the most eventful year of our lives. I remember well on the 3rd of January when WWIII started trending, thankfully it didn't come to that rather we were given COVID 19.

If I ask you just like I've asked myself, you might say 2020 should just end already; we have to stay indoors, livelihood is threatened, people are dying, insecurity is mounting, the economy is declining, I mean what kind of a year is this?

Well, the thing is we still have 8 months to go, over 240 days to go so what are you going to do about that?

Are you going to sit around blaming the world, asking God questions, recalling all the things you could have been doing, all the places you could have gone, all the money you could have been making? Or will you make the best use of it?

Remember we're all in this myself, yourself and more than a billion other people. The irony is we won't all come out as we went in, some will come out better, more fervent, some will learn a new skill, some a new language, some will write a book, some will earn a certificate, some will grow their audience and network, how will you come out of it?

We may all experience the same thing, the s,ame factors, and challenges but different outcomes. Your outcome will depend on your response, will you stand up to it or cave in, will you take action or will you continue to curse your luck, will you push forward or will you stand still?

Your life is in your hand and you, onCOVIDu not COVID 19 can change that. Take control of your life and make the best use of the moment.

If life throws you a lemon, make lemonade.

How are you making use of this present situation? Comment below.

Innovation and Startups: A Tale of Yabacon Valley

Except you are internet disabled or live in a village with no access to the outside world then you would know how important industries are to a countries economy. For instance, the tech industry contributes over $2.3 trillion (12%) to America's GDP.

With the surge in technology in the last 20 years, Silicon Valley has become the biggest cluster of tech startups in the world hosting industry giants like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and the likes. Other countries including Nigeria have sorted to create their own versions with Yabacon Valley being the hole in which Nigeria's tech industry is to be built.

Starting from 2011, interesting Nigerian startups like Andela, Konga, Jumia, Flutterwave, Hotel.ng and others, Yabacon Valley quickly gained a reputation as Nigeria's tech hub.

With the hope and optimism built around Yabacon Valley, it seems to have taken a negative turn in recent years with some even predicting its demise which started with the exodus of companies from the area.

What made Silicon Valley sValley's and Yabacon Valley almost impossible to imitate it? Let examine some of it, some of which you may be aware of already.

1. The first vital catch in the success of silicon valley is the area itself. It had a clear advantage over other locations because of its well-established business infrastructure and talented resource pool. Everything you'll need to succeed as a startup is there, it's a highly sophisticated environment for business to thrive.

This is unlike Yabacon Valley which has the advantage of proximity between Lagos mainland and Island, this doesn't count for much as it does not have the infrastructure and talent pool to match its counterparts.

2. Another factor that gave silicon valley an edge is it's the spirit of cooperation. Startup founders were more interested in promoting each other regardless of company affiliations. The presence of this atmosphere made it a practice for people to share their expertise.

3. Education: Due to the presence of world-class institutions in that area notably Stanford University and the University of California, there was a talented pool of hungry entrepreneurs. With notable individuals like Sergy Brin, Larry Page, Elon Musk, Elizabeth Holmes and many others who made a name in the tech industry.

These factors and some few others made silicon valley and as well made it difficult to be replicated in Nigeria. Given the resolve of government and institutions to do the right things Yabacon Valley can still live up to its high hopes.

Influence: How To Get There Faster and With Less Hassle

At every point in time, youre always under some sort of influence, either willingly or unwillingly. You can consciously choose to model the way you talk, walk, eat, write, smile, dress after someone and other times the influence is unconscious perhaps you like a particular writer so much you start to emulate his style of writing or a particular artist and you start to sing like him.

In whatever shape it comes, influence is one of the biggest factors of our lives, we are all under it even at present.

The difference is this, while one man opens himself to any and all type of influence another man purposely choose which influence to take in and which to shut out.

A notable man once said 'where you'll be from now would be determined by two things; the books you read and the friends you keep' which are both influence.

A man open to the right influence generally comes out better than the man whose not. The difference between a great athlete and an average athlete minus talent and physical abilities mostly come down to influence of some sort.

So it comes down to two things, want to move ahead in the right directions? Read the right books and meet the right people, force yourself into the right circles and watch you life head in a positive direction.
