My 11-Year-Old Son Gave Me a Masterclass in Financial Mindset…”
😂 You think adults resist financial discipline? Try explaining it to an 11-year-old.
A few weekends ago, I taught an MBA class on Financial Forecasting and Budgeting. Midway through the lecture, a lady shared something simple yet profound:
She no longer gives her children packaged juice for school.
After an honest family meeting with her five children, they collectively agreed to switch to healthier, more affordable fresh juice.
No shouting.
No threats.
No “because I said so.”
Just a genuine conversation… and a collective decision.
Her story touched me...
So when I got home, I decided to share the same wisdom with my 11-year-old son, the one who drinks fresh juice every morning and still confidently tops it up with Ribena and biscuits as his school snack.
I hadn’t even finished the story when he looked at me and said:
“Mummy… you only have ONE child left in this house.
There’s no need for us to discuss cutting down on my snacks.” 😭😂
I couldn’t stop laughing.
And right there in his innocence was a lesson that many grown adults still struggle with:
👉 People don’t resist financial decisions, they resist decisions that exclude them.
👉 People defend comfort when they don’t understand the purpose.
👉 There is no financial discipline without emotional buy-in.
My son wasn’t rejecting the idea…
He was reacting to the fear of loss, the same thing adults do with budgets, savings plans, lifestyle changes, and financial boundaries.
And it reminded me of a deeper truth:
Financial discipline is not about cutting costs.
It’s about communicating value.
Whether at home, in business, or in your personal life, money decisions require clarity, empathy, and conversation, not commands.
Sometimes the breakthrough you need is not a stricter rule…
It’s a better conversation.

● Have you ever tried to make a financial change and someone resisted? How did you handle it?
