"THE MAITATSINE UPRISINGS DURING SHEHU SHAGARI’S ADMINISTRATION"

Nigeria’s journey as a nation has encountered moments that tested its unity and resilience. One of the earliest and most significant of these challenges was the Maitatsine crisis, which occurred during the civilian administration of President Alhaji Shehu Shagari in the early 1980s.
The movement was led by Muhammad Marwa Maitatsine, a radical preacher originally from Cameroon. He preached against modern education, western technology, and even the teachings of established Islamic scholars. Over time, he gathered a large following, mainly among the urban poor in Kano State. His teachings encouraged defiance of both religious leaders and government authorities, turning the sect into a hostile and militant group.
In December 1980, tensions erupted into full-scale violence. Clashes between Maitatsine’s followers, residents of Kano, and security forces resulted in widespread destruction. Thousands of people lost their lives, and entire communities were shaken. Although Maitatsine himself died during the conflict, this did not bring the violence to an end.
The sect continued to operate through surviving leaders, leading to further uprisings in:
Bulunkutu, Borno (1982)
Rigasa, Kaduna (1982)
Jimeta and Yola in then Gongola State (1984)
Gombe (1985)
These incidents collectively remained one of the most violent religious movements in Nigeria’s history until the rise of Boko Haram decades later.
The Maitatsine crisis stands today as a powerful reminder of the dangers of extremist ideology, misinformation, and social neglect. It also highlights the need for national unity, strong security intelligence, proper education, and economic support, especially for vulnerable communities who can be easily influenced by dangerous doctrines.
For Nigeria to move forward, we must continue to promote peace, religious tolerance, and mutual respect. Our differences should never be a reason for division, but a foundation for strength and progress.
