The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made it clear on Monday that it does not expect anything less than an outright win by the Nigerian Super Eagles when they face the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in the final Group C match of the 29th Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.
Draws in two games so far have now rendered Tuesday’s encounter a must-win for Nigeria and the NFF says there is no excuse for the players and technical crew not to do Nigeria proud at the tournament.
Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee, Chief Emeka Inyama, said: “This team has received tremendous support from the Government of Nigeria, the football federation and the good and passionate people of our country. There is nothing the players or the Head Coach and his crews have requested for that we have failed to provide."
“After qualifying for this championship, the team has played a number of friendly matches and everything that is needed to motivate players and officials have been provided for them. All that is left now is for the team to go all out and show a high level of commitment and patriotic fervor in getting the job done.”
The NFF organized top-class friendly matches for the Super Eagles in the run-up to this tournament, with the team playing against Venezuela in the United States of America, Catalonia in Barcelona and Cape Verde (one of the first teams to reach the quarter finals here) in Portugal. They also played against Dutch team FC Rotterdam and Portuguese club Farense during a 20-day final training camp in Faro, Portugal.
Before the kick-off of the championship and despite limited financial power, the NFF ensured payment of salaries of all members of the technical crew till the end of this month.
Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Barrister Chris Green, also agreed that there is no excuse for the team not to work hard and do like-never-before to give back lost honor to Nigeria on Tuesday.
“There is no reason whatsoever for the team to fail. The NFF has done its part, done almost everything required of the federation to train a team for this competition and motivate that team."
“The draws against Burkina Faso, and Zambia were uncalled for, but those matches are behind us and we have a huge opportunity to put things right against the Ethiopians.”
The Super Eagles have savored the beautiful environment of their Hunters’ Rest home since arriving in Rustenburg on Sunday afternoon, ahead of the testy duel with the fast-paced, tireless Antelopes of Ethiopia.
But Barrister Green says: “We have to be very careful against the Ethiopians. They run hard and forever and do the short-passing game brilliantly. But with the personnel that we have here, we should be able to contain them and get the goals we need to reach the quarter finals.”
Skipper Joseph Yobo has recovered from injury he sustained in the first game against Burkina Faso and could come into the fray on Tuesday, with youngster Kenneth Omeruo sure to fill in at right back, earlier occupied by midfielder Ogenyi Onazi against the Zambians last Friday.
NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu said on Monday: “The Super Eagles should just go into Tuesday’s game and show why they are super. Nigerians have lost patience. We have had enough of draws, and it is time to start winning.”
Cup holders Zambia will take on Burkina Faso’s Etalons at Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium simultaneously on Tuesday. Depending on results of Tuesday’s matches, the Super Eagles will either stay in Rustenburg on their way home or return to Mbombela for Sunday’s quarter finals.

Ezekwesili Reiterates Challenge of Federal Government to Debate Transparency and Accountability
Oby Ezekwesili, who at the weekend accused Nigeria’s governments since 2007 of “squandering of the significant sum of $45 Billion in foreign reserve account and another $22Billion in the Excess Crude Account,” today said she remains resolute “in demanding full disclosure and accountability by the Federal Government on the issues of poor management of oil revenues.”
The former World Bank Vice President for Africa made her original remarks during last week’s convocation lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, following which the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, accused Mrs. Ezekwesili of “misinformation” and “a surprisingly limited understanding of government finances.”
Although Maku made these sweeping statements, he did not provide any substance to his attempted rebuttal of Mrs. Ezekwesili, who was briefly the Minister of Education before her departure for the World Bank.
But Minister Maku did say of Mrs. Ezekwesili that she “collected” N352.3 billion as Minister of Education, suggesting that Ministerial budgets are normally “collected” by Ministers.
“I wish to reassure Nigerians that my integrity and transparent record in public office can never be tarnished by baseless allegations regarding my ten months as Minister of Education,” Mrs. Ezekwesili responded today.
She added: “Citizens who follow Education sector closely will know that the Education Sector budget which the Government spokesperson carelessly referred to represents the consolidated direct budgetary allocation by the National Assembly to the 22 parastatals plus all the Federal Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the country. At no time does a sitting Minister of Education have access to the Budgets of statutory bodies under her Ministry.”
During her lecture, Mrs. Ezekwesili said, among others, “Six years after the administration I served handed over such humongous national wealth to another one; most Nigerians but especially the poor continue to suffer the effects of failing public health and education systems as well as decrepit infrastructure and battered institutions. One cannot but ask, what exactly does Nigeria convey with this level of brazen misappropriation of public resources? Where did all that money go? Where is the accountability for the use of both these resources plus the additional several hundred billions of dollars realized from oil sale by the two administrations that have governed our nation in the last six years? How were these resources applied or more appropriately, misapplied? Tragic choices! Yes. Our national dignity continues to be degraded by cycles of stagnation because of the terrible choices my generation and those before repeatedly make as a result of free oil money. The wealth and poverty of a nation never found a better Symbol!"
An apparently startled government, finding itself under such withering assault from a credible international figure, responded through Mr. Maku, who seemed determined only to inflict a personal attack on the speaker. Not once did he focus on the challenge offered by Mrs. Ezekwesili, which is on good governance on the grounds of transparency and accountability.
The former Minister, who was also widely-known for her leadership of the Due Process department in the presidency before she became a Minister, pounced: “I have already asked the Federal Government to a PUBLIC DEBATE of the FACTS raised in my speech,” she said in her response today.
“Such an open debate of facts and figures of oil revenue since 2007 would help situate public accountability as the centerpoint of our democracy. In accepting to publicly debate the questions raised in my speech, the Federal Government would model the democratic culture of responding to citizens' demands for accountability especially at a time when the general public is eager for improvements in the good governance records of the Administration.”
Shying away from the central issue, Mr. Maku merely urged Nigerians to acknowledge the achievements of the government. He did not say what those achievements are.
Nor did he say whether the government will accept the challenge to publicly debate the facts concerning government expenditure of Nigeria’s oil revenues.
In December 2011, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo similarly blasted the Goodluck Jonathan government, saying it had squandered over $35 billion of Nigeria’s foreign reserves since May 2007. The former President said the money may have been “shared.”
Mr. Jonathan has since declared that the only entity that is fighting corruption more than his administration is the United States.

Nigeria’s top music stars: What they worth!
By OPEOLUWANI OGUNJIMI
As far as today’s Nigerian music is concerned, its story is incomplete without these musicians. They are the movers and shakers of the industry, and their finger prints have shaped our music and made it acceptable to the world. They make bulk of their money from entertainment shows and events in the form of performance fees and corporate endorsements. However, controversy has ensued on who is the greatest among them as regards fans, annual earnings and deals among others. Come with us as we take you into their world.
2face
2face whose real names are Innocent Ujah Idibia ranks among the very best of Nigerian music stars. At the time, he came to limelight after leaving the now defunct Plantashun Boyz, 2face was virtually an unknown name in the nation’s music scene. But his desire to go solo under Kennis Music, and floating his own record label, Hypertek Entertainment, marked a turning point in his career. And today, 2face is a crowd puller any day.
His “African Queen” song released in 2006, was used in the soundtrack for the film Phat Girlz, which was released internationally. He also released a promotion album in 2008, releasing the single, “Enter the Place”. Problems with album distribution in 2007, caused as shift of the release date of the album from 2008 to 2009. Tuface released two singles from the international version of his Unstoppable album and is the first Nigerian artist to have an appropriately priced international album.
The Unstoppable International Edition album, released in 2010, won two awards at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards. Although he just joined Twitter, he already has over eighteen thousand followers. Few months back, the rumour mills had it that the African Queen crooner paid the sum of N10 million each to Pero and Sunbo – his other baby mamas – as settlement before going ahead to marry, Annie Macaulay. AFCON: CAF hammers Referee over undeserved penalty against Nigeria
Grisha Ghead, the Egyptian referee who officiated the Nigeria versus Zambia match has been sent home. We gathered that the referee was sent home by the Confederation of African Football after it was discovered that the penalty he awarded to Zambia which resulted in the equaliser against Nigeria, late in the second half of the crucial encounter was questionable. Our checks confirmed that the decision to send the Egyptian home was taken after CAF had undertaken a review of the tape of the match and it was concluded that the penalty was uncalled for and undeserved.

Lagos prostitutes celebrate matron at 70
Even though prostitution, the oldest profession in the world is an open sore in the urban areas, especially in the commercial city of Lagos state where the business booms, there are yet many shocking happenings in the name of s*x-for-money.
It was all glitz, fun and razzmatazz over the weekend at Ejigbo, a densely populated area of Lagos as commercial s*x workers, otherwise known as prostitutes gathered to celebrate one of the top members of the bed-to-wealth business who turned 70.
The well-attended event reunited both retired and active members of the Association of Nigerian Prostitutes (ANP) who came to shower praises on the septuagenarian who they described as their ‘Matron’
Over 60 prostitutes converged at a popular brothel in Ejigbo, a shanty house built with wooden shacks, which accommodates over 15 stakeholders in the ‘dirty’ business.
Madam Juliet (surname withheld) who turned 70 got a surprise birthday bash from members of ANP for her distinguish role. She described it as her best gift ever.
According to the septuagenarian who once acted as the Treasurer of Lagos South chapter of ANP, life has been boring since she retired from active prostitution.
“I can say that I am the happiest person on earth today because I never knew some persons still love me like this. I came into this business at the age of 21 and now I am 70. I am so happy because people are celebrating me not because I embezzled government fund or killed anybody. I’m being celebrated because I made some people to understand that you can make it even if you are not a politician”

Everybody must not work in A*o Rock or NNPC, so I find joy in whatever I do, now you have heard all the testimonies. I thank God for everything. I know some people are out there condemning this profession but the gospel truth is that, they are the worst pretenders.

Asked how she ended up as a prostitutes, Zion Gate, as people would call her because of her gap teeth, frowned at this reporter, “We are not prostitutes, we are relievers. If you want to see prostitutes, go to Ikoyi or Island at night you will see them. So mind your utterance young man.
When prodded further, on what pushed her into the s*x-for-money trade, she said angrily: “I think you are a journalist and you are happy writing, right? Asking me why I ‘relieve’ people is just like me asking you why you eat food.”
Asked if she still service people even at 70, she said: “Seriously, like they say, old wine tastes good, some of my old customers still call me for servicing, but I made them to understand that old age has finally caught up with me that I need to rest now.”

She disclosed that her memorable day was the day she tricked a pastor’s wife into prostitution. According to Zion: “Then I was squatting with my aunty at Ikotun and the pastor’s wife happened to be my friend, she often complain that her husband doesn’t have her time because of ministerial work. I tricked her into the business and she abandoned her husband, the saddest thing was that she died 8 months later, while on her way to Imo to service one of the top government officials,” she recalled with nostalgia.

Recounting further, Zion told this reporter that before she clocks 100, she hoped to have trained over a thousand girls on how to make money without the government.
One of the ringleaders in a chat with DailyPost extolled Zion for her excellent role. According to her, the celebrant did not only bring her into the business, but got her established . “I’m happy to know her,” she said.

She was presented with a gas cooker and a TV set.

AfCON 2013: Keshi, Assistants Not Owed A Dime – NFF

Reports making the rounds that head coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, along with his assistants, are being owed salaries and other financial entitlements, has been debunked by the Nigeria Football Federation.

Barrister Chris Green, executive committee member of the NFF, also disclosed that the Federation had never owed Keshi or any of its coaches salaries.

informationng.com quotes Green as saying, “The NFF is not owing Keshi salaries and we have never owed him in the past. We have seen reports in some sections of the media claiming we owe the coach salaries but these stories lack facts and substance.”

The NFF top brass also revealed that bickerings between players and the NFF which have severally threatened to rock the Super Eagles in the past will not be experienced in South Africa.

“As I speak to you, we have paid all camp allowances and other financial entitlements to all the players in Faro, Portugal. Morale has never been higher among the players and we are confident they will recompense our efforts with a good showing at the AfCON,” he said.

First Nigerian troops to reach Mali in 24 hours

ABUJA - The first of a planned 900 Nigerian troops will deploy to Mali in the next 24 hours as part of a UN-mandated African force aimed at helping the country battle Islamists, a defence spokesman said Tuesday.

“The president approved the deployment of a battalion, and in the next 24 hours a company of the battalion will be deployed,” Colonel Mohammed Yerima told journalists. “The remainder will be deployed later.”

He added that Nigeria’s total commitment will be around 900 troops, or 300 more than previously announced. The first company will include 190 personnel, he said.

The planned 3,300-strong African force is to be commanded by a Nigerian, Major General Shehu Usman Abdulkadir, previously his country’s chief of army standards and evaluation.

Nigeria announced at the weekend that a Nigerian military technical team as well as the commander were already on the ground carrying out support and preparation work.

The country, the continent’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, has the biggest military in 15-nation regional bloc ECOWAS, which is organising the African intervention.

France began an air assault against Islamists who control northern Mali last week after the extremists took a key central town and threatened to push further south.

French defence sources said Tuesday that Paris is planning to triple the size of its force in Mali to a total of 2,500 troops.

The Islamists’ advance has raised fears that Mali could become a safe haven for Al Qaeda-linked extremists and criminal gangs, posing risks to the region and beyond.

Meanwhile, west African army chiefs met in Bamako on Tuesday on plans to send the African troops. A summit of west African leaders is also to be held on Saturday.

Since the French air offensive was launched on Friday, the Islamists have fled three key towns under their control: Timbuktu, where residents have suffered some of the worst abuses of the past 10 months, as well as Gao, also in the north, and Douentza in Mali’s centre.

Though driven from their strongholds by French Rafale fighter jets, the Islamists struck back Monday in the government-held south, capturing the small town of Diabaly some 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of Bamako.

The African force had not been due to deploy before September, but the Islamists’ advance further south last week, sparking the French assault, led to expedited plans.

Regional countries have since been pledging troops for the force, with most committing 500. Nigeria has so far committed the largest number. (AFP)

Arepo Explosions: NNPC officials aiding, abetting vandals – Amosun

…As 3 more bodies recovered *Pipeline vandalisation, a big business—DPR
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Sunday, accused officials of National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, of conniving with vandals to wreak havoc on the country’s economy through pipeline vandalism.

He said this following the fire at the corporation’s pipeline at Arepo village in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state, which claimed unsuspecting number of lives.

Meanwhile, the Arepo explosion has disrupted fuel supply to South-Western states, an official of Pipelines and Product Marketing Company, PPMC, has said. The pipeline supplies fuel from Atlas Cove jetty in Lagos to other South-Western states.

Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, has, meantime, described the Arepo pipeline vandalism as big business for youths in communities close to the pipelines, because vandalisation had gone unchecked for over a decade, adding that explosions would occur as long as the security operatives and managements of NNPC/PPMC refuse to tackle the issue headlong.

Meanwhile, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, yesterday, said it had begun evacuation of dead bodies from Arepo village, scene of the pipeline explosion, adding that three additional bodied had been recovered.

It would be recalled that the death of over 50 suspected vandals occurred following a fire which was sparked off by some vandals, who stormed the creeks by boat to siphon fuel from NNPC pipeline.

Speaking when he visited scene of the explosion, Amosun told newsmen that, he was disappointed with the attitude of NNPC officials, who he said deliberately abandoned the multi-billion naira project for it to be damaged by hoodlums.

“It shows that we are our own problem in this nation. We are our own enemies, because, this is clearly a failure of governance. We have NNPC there, I have to say it and I am saying it with every sense of responsibility that, NNPC by their inaction is aiding and abetting the vandals.

“I want to believe that they are part of this pipeline vandalism with their inaction. Because, you can’t have somebody there as Group Managing Director and they allow this to happen.

“Even the security people here are risking their lives. Look at the canoe NNPC is using at this age and time. Even when they say the place is combustible, they can use solar power canoe. If they agree, I will get all these place cleared before the end of March.

“Look at where they said the security watchtower is. Who will stay there to watch anything? This is not good for us as a nation, we are our own enemies. Public property are not looked after. We should do the right thing. This is a multi billion naira investment.

“How can we not spend a small amount to maintain it? That is why I said NNPC with their inaction are part of this problem. I want to believe that they are the people aiding and abetting these vandals. How can some vandals put everybody in this nation into problem? Just look at dead bodies littering the place?

“There is no access to go there and these are the people with sophisticated weapons. I even understand that it was the same spot where NNPC engineers were killed, so which officer will want to risk his life? If, we have this type of investment, of course it will do us good. We have started erecting the platform. They will put CCTV there and there will be control room.

“ If they want to stop vandalism in Ogun State, I don’t know of any other state, they should come and we will discuss because I don’t want Ogun State to be on the front pages of newspapers for wrong reasons. I will write again to the appropriate authorities and I have been doing that.

“This is not good for us as a nation. Every time, they will say that vandals have done this and that, what have they (NNPC) done. Some people will be in Abuja blowing big grammars, very ineffective” Amosun said.

A top management staff of DPR who spoke to Vanguard on telephone, yesterday, said, “Arepo pipelines is a big business because, some village live off the pipelines and have no other job, so vandalism will continue.

“Arepo has been happening for years, not one, not two, even over 10 years and since then, the security agencies are not helping neither is PPMC the owners of the pipelines in checkmating the havoc.”

Members of NNPC Group Public Affairs Department contacted by Vanguard said they were in a meeting.

“We were lucky this time around because a lot of people could have died in the explosions. This is because when the first explosion happened, people in the area ran away, and the nearest depot also shut down, so that by the time the second explosion happened, which was more deadly, there was hardly anybody around.”

NEMA’s Public Relations Officer, South West, Mr Ibrahim Farinoye, told Vanguard on phone that, so far, three additional bodies have been evacuated from the area, adding that search for bodies would continue today.

He said the agency will employ the service of the people in the area that know the terrain in the search effort.

“So far, three additional bodies have been evacuated. We are going there tomorrow (today) to continue the search and remove anything we found there.”

Asked to comment on the figure published by national dailies, Farinoye said it could not be established until the exercise was concluded.

Residents flay security agencies
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Journalist Estate Residents Association in Arepo village, Mr Gbayode Somuyiwa, has said that he suspected unholy alliance between some security operatives and vandals, who siphon petroleum products from NNPC pipelines.

Somuyiwa alleged that security personnel attached to the place had failed to safeguard the place against activities of the hoodlums.

He described the situation as a major concern to the residents of the area, who are mostly journalists and urged the Federal Government to intervene, adding that the government needed to go beyond talks to employing more technology in monitoring the areas.

Spokesman for PPMC, Mr Nasir Imodagbe, when contacted by Vanguard, said the vandalisation of Arepo pipeline had disrupted operations of the company, adding that officials of the firm were already on ground to arrest the situation. He added that the effects of the vandals’ activities were minimal as PPMC plans to resume operation soon.

“Vandals have disrupted our operation but PPMC officials are on ground to put out the fire. The effect cause by the damage was not much but as soon as the situation was addressed, we will resume operation. The situation will not be as bad as the first incident that led to fuel scarcity in Lagos and other south-western part in the country.”

He regretted that few nefarious elements were bent to destroy government property at the detriment of Nigerians.

Imogagbe urged Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement made by hoodlums in areas where government property are sited, particularly pipelines.
