KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT THROUGH THE OFFICE OF HER EXCELLENCY, PLAYS GREAT ROLE IN WOMEN AND CHILD PROTECTION INITIATIVES.

Safety starts at home, but it’s sustained when leaders make it a priority, In Kogi State women and children have found a consistent advocate in the First Lady. Her work on protection and empowerment has shifted conversations from silence to action, and from policy on paper to physical supports in communities across the State.

Trafficking, domestic violence, and child exploitation thrive where people don’t talk about them, Her Excellency has used her office to bring these issues into open discussion through different schools visits and educational projects, in framing protection as a shared responsibility, she’s helped reduce the stigma that keeps victims quiet.

This has been consistent in which every girl child deserves to stay in school, every woman deserves to work without fear, and every child deserves to grow safely.

Beyond speeches, the First Lady office has backed concrete initiatives which includes the awareness campaigns in markets, schools, and rural communities to educate families on the warning signs of trafficking and all forms of abuse.
Support for survivors, linking them with legal aid, counseling, skills acquisition, different empowerment projects to help rebuild independence.

The focus isn’t just in response after harm occurs, but on prevention through information and economic empowerment.

It Matters for Kogi’s future because when women and children are protected, the whole State benefits.
Girls who stay in school become the teachers, nurses, business owners of tomorrow and many other professional walks of life. Trust in institutions grows when people see that help is available and that their cases are taken seriously.

Building a safer Kogi isn’t a one-day event. It’s daily work conversations in villages, training for frontline workers, and the willingness to call out what’s wrong. Through her advocacy and programs, *Her Excellency Hajiya Sefinat Usman Ododo* has shown that leadership means standing between vulnerable people and those who would exploit them.

In a state where one voice can change a life, her voice has been clear,the future is safer when women and children are protected.

PUBLIC NOTIFICATION

Kogi State Government, through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Fraud and Internet Matters to the Executive Governor, hereby invites the general public, stakeholders, students, youth groups, community leaders, civil society organizations, and all well-meaning citizens to participate in the official flag-off of the Kogi Anti-Internet Fraud Campaign.

The campaign is designed to promote integrity, responsible conduct, creativity, and legitimate means of livelihood among young people across the state, while raising awareness on the dangers and consequences of internet fraud and related crimes.

Theme: Character, Creativity and Clean Wealth

Date: Monday, 25th May, 2026

Venue: Banquet Hall, Government House, Lokoja, Kogi State

Time: 10:00AM Prompt

This important initiative will bring together government officials, security agencies, educational institutions, youth organizations, and development partners in a united effort to build a safer and more responsible society.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and lend their voices to the campaign against internet fraud. Together, we can promote honesty, protect the future of our youth, and build a better Kogi State for all.

Trafficker Bags 7 Years Imprisonment, N4 Million Fine

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on 7th May, 2026 sentenced one Bose Jimoh to 7 years imprisonment and a fine of N4 million for organizing foreign travels that promote prostitution and the intentional exportation of victims for exploitation, contrary to Sections 14(b) and 18 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act (TIPPEA) 2015.

A four-count charge was filed against the defendant, Bose Jimoh, on 15th October, 2025. Having been found guilty on all counts, the defendant was convicted and sentenced as follows:

*Five (5) years imprisonment and a fine of N1 million on Count 1 for exportation of persons knowing that such persons would be subjected to exploitation;
* Five (5) years imprisonment and a fine of N1 million on Count 2 for exportation of persons knowing that such persons would be subjected to exploitation;
* Seven (7) years imprisonment and a fine of N1 million on Count 3 for organizing foreign travel that promotes prostitution; and
* Seven (7) years imprisonment and a fine of N1 million on Count 4 for organizing foreign travel that promotes prostitution under the TIPPEA Act 2015.

The terms of imprisonment are to run concurrently, with effect from 7th May, 2026.

Discipline by a parent isn’t a crime in Nigeria. The law recognizes that parents have a right and duty to correct their children.

Where it becomes an issue is _how_ the discipline is carried out. If it crosses into physical harm, assault, or abuse that endangers the child’s health or dignity, then the law steps in to protect the child. Sections 295 and 55 of the Penal Code, and the Child Rights Act, draw that line between correction and abuse.

So it’s not about stopping fathers from raising their daughters. It’s about making sure discipline builds them up without causing lasting harm.

SAY NO TO DESPERATE CHOICES:

To "say no to desperate choices" in the context of human trafficking means recognizing that traffickers specifically target individuals in crisis by preying on their dreams and needs through deception. While poverty, political instability, and family crises often create a "limitless supply" of vulnerable people, awareness and proactive measures can prevent exploitation.

Nobody wakes up and plan to be trafficked. It start with one moment of desperation. One fake job offer. One whispered promise of “better life abroad”. One “yes” said too fast.

Humans trafficking does not always begins with kidnapping. It begins with a choice, a desperate choice made when options feels small and hope feels far away

To avoid being lured into a trafficking situation, we need to be cautious of Job offers that seem too easy: Be wary of roles that promise high pay for little effort or experience.

Unusual interview requests: Meetings in unsafe or remote locations, or requests for revealing photos, are major warning signs. Pressure to keep secrets whereby legitimate employers will not ask you to keep your job a secret or lie about your age.

Ways in which we can protect ourselves and others is:
Verify Opportunities: Research any employer or institution thoroughly and of course check for legitimate business licenses and reviews.

Stay Connected: Always tell a trusted friend or family member where you are going and who you are meeting. Share copies of your travel documents with them.

Human trafficking ends when desperate choices ends. And desperate choices end when we know our worth

Say No to Desperate Choices. That’s how we keep tomorrow safe.

Earlier today, I played host to the students of Mass Communication of the Kogi State Polytechnic on the subject: Research on Child Abuse and Human Trafficking eradication plans of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo and Her Excellency, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo in Kogi State.
