The Mkar Conservation Project

```Why is Important?```
The Mkar mountain is fast losing its ecosystems and biodiversity majorly through Human activities which includes but not limited to, indiscriminate tree felling, adoption of harmful farming practices, overhunting, indiscriminate dumping of plastics and non-biodegradable substances on the mountain, encroachment, bush burning amongst other nefarious practices and traditions.
The loss of species and ecosystems can result in the loss of cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and spiritual connections to nature. Increased vulnerability to natural disasters: Healthy, diverse ecosystems can help protect human communities from natural disasters, such as floods, storms and landslides. Let's not forget that we share the earth with other living things whose habitats and life cycle we are disruption, threatening their survival and existence
This project therefore is part of efforts by the Benue Hike Tourism and Conservation (BHTCF) Foundation through the *Benue Environmental Conservation Initiative (BECI) seeking to preserve our natural spaces.
By achieving a Conservation Status for the mountain, many of the above mentioned practices will cease.
Part of the plans is to make the mountain a research center, reintroduce plants and animal species that are at the verge of actually extinction, make it an animal shelter and sanctuary, a recreation spot and study area.
In the coming days, we will continue working with the relevant stakeholders to make it illegal to dump non-biodegradable substances on the mountain. We will also work to criminalize tree felling, use of certain chemicals during farming on the mountain, poaching and encroachment on the mountain .
Part of the project is also tagging trees on the mountain giving each a unique identity and advocate that they do not be felled.
The project has capacity to generate employment and economic empowerment for the host community.
We are working with various partners who are passionate about the environment, they include, Kasejene Agricultural Enterprise, The Scent Shop, Benue Hike Group
Benue Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Aride Landscapes (ACReSAL), Good Health Environmental Living Foundation, Celebrate, a fitness focused organization, Akwaaba Travels,
Center for commercial Agricultural Revolution( SamAgro Services), Victoria Travels, and Jumifa Bread.
We are open to more partners who have the same objective as us.
But perhaps the most important part of the project is that it is being driven by the host communities, it's a cardinal value of the foundation that communities must take charge and leadership in conversation of their natural spaces, in that way the project becomes more sustainable.
A female European Honey Buzzard Bird was fitted with a satellite tracking system in Finland recently and was of particular interest to locals because it spent the most recent austral summer around the town of Reitz in the Free State in South Africa. She left Reitz to start heading north on 20 April and on the 2nd of June, she finally reached Finland where she will probably spend the boreal summer before probably returning again next season for a visit in South Africa.
Here is an image showing the data received from the tracker which plots out the route that she took to head north... so, in just 42 days, she covered over 10 000 km at an average of more than 230 km every single day! Isn’t that just amazing...?!"
What is amazing is how she took a straight line north except for when she had to fly over water. (or Sudan)
Apparently she turned right at the source of the Nile and followed it. It is still fascinating that after that deviation she returned to the same longitudinal line she started on and continued until she reached her destination. Mother nature at its most fascinating best...
Have you seen me in your yard? I'm a Stenopelmatus. Please... DON'T kill me!
I would like to tell you a little about myself. Many people also know me as a potato bug, Jerusalem cricket, Skull Insect, Childface, or Mother of Scorpion. People get scared when they see me and want to kill me. The reality is that I'm running from you.
I'm not a spider nor scorpion or cricket, and I HAVE NO POISON. My only weapon is my mandibles. With them, I feed off the organic waste that is found next to garden plants.
We have a very important role in the environment because we help plant growth, thanks to removing the earth and thus allowing soil oxygenation.
My life span is a year.
If you find me at night, don't kill me. I'm just looking for food and a safe place to hide. Please... DON'T kill me!❀
Benue Hike, Tourism and Conservation Foundation was well represented at the West African Ecofeminism Forum in Senegal.
Environmental issues took center stage. The effects of environmental degradation to the wellbeing of women, and by extension, the entire society were thrashed. All suggestions geared towards tackling this ill pointed to one thing - protect the environment, help nature to thrive for the sake of all of us.
Benue Hike, Tourism and Conservation Foundation is doing her bit in this regard. You too can be a part of this.
Benue Hike Conservative and Tourism Foundation is calling for donations. She has set up a "ComFundMe Campaign" in order to raise funds for Project ACT NOW .
Project ACT NOW depicts the urgency to which the foundation hopes to intervene to save the Benue River.
The project aims at cleaning the River Benue, curbing harmful fishing practices, and ensuring that the river is safe for humans and the other life in it.
Donations will be channeled towards:
1. Producing a documentary titled "When Tomorrow Comes", which will throw more light on the issues on and around the river; and enlightenment on how to make is safe.
2. Local Fabrication of a mowing boat to clean and evacuate waste from the river;
3. Purchase and deployment of drag nets to create barriers to prevent further pollution;
4. Hiring of trucks to evacuate waste;
5. Hiring of space for junkyard where sorting will be done;
6. Purchase of waste and trash bins;
7. Purchase of personal Protective equipment doe volunteers;
8. Get sweep nets for removing trash;
9. Purchase bar Code Scanners;
10. And engage in production and Airing of radio jingles, and other publicity materials.
A donation to this cause is a donation to support nature and save humanity.
Part II
Re: GOVERNOR ORTOM ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO THE WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM OF PURE BIOTECH LTD.
As conveyed by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity Mr. Terver Akase, the Benue Hike Tourism and Conservation Foundation appreciates the proactiveness of Governor Ortom by ordering investigation into the WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM OF PURE BIOTECH LTD, located at Kilometer 12 Gboko road Makurdi.
However we call for a more independent and inclusive investigation into the matter. We demand the government commissions an inquiry into the issue that includes the following .
1. The NGOs
2. The Press
3. Related Professional bodies
4. Academia
5. The Community.
We strongly suspect that this environmental hazard has been perpetuated and aided by the neglect of the government bodies responsible for the regulation of this company. They cannot now turn around to be judges in their case.
If the government really is interested in getting to the bottom of this issue,(as we suspect it is) it should set up an independent enquiry into the matter because from preliminary enquiry, we hold the Government Ministries, Department and Agencies partly responsibile for this neglect and we suspect their involvement in the investigation will compromise the outcome.
They are the co-accusers in this matter and should be questioned rather than take lead in the investigation.
We look forward to hearing from the government of Benue state on this.
Thank you
