Owing to its strategic location by the coastline, Nigeria is the pivot of West Africa’s shipping activities with over 3,000 merchant vessels in the range of 19,000 to 200,000 GT flocking in and out of the country every year.

The only thing that Nigeria was missing was a shipyard or a ship-building facility in Nigeria which could accommodate ships in the range of 19k to 200k GT.

Through Samsung's business diversification at its yard and the successful completion of the repair works on the VLCC, SHIN has set a new record in its effort to make Nigeria the hub of offshore technology and various maritime services in Africa.

We are thrilled to announce that the 330 metres long Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) berthed at the SHI-MCI yard to receive vessel repair and upgrade works for the first time in Lagos. With this development, prospective clients in other parts of Africa and Europe that carry out ship repairs, maintenance, and upgrades in the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Dubai, and Singapore will find Nigeria a more attractive location and cost-effective country for such works.

Jongseok Kim, the Managing Director of Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria (SHIN) shares how Nigeria is geared to become the hub for various maritime services."Although Nigeria holds a strong geographical advantage that will enable the country to become the hub for various maritime services such as ship repair & conversion and upgrades, there was no adequate ship repair and building facility in Nigeria that could accommodate ships in the range of 90K to 200K GT until now.

Through Samsung's business diversifications here in Nigeria, we are now able to provide suitable and alternative locations to international clients and provide various maritime services such as cargo, container logistics, ship repair & conversion, FPSO upgrades, and so on at our world-class SHI-MCI yard."
