Èlégbé in Yorùbá/Ifá Tradition

Èlégbé is the spirit of companionship and the gatekeeper of Egbe Òrun (heavenly peers). It connects humans with their spiritual society from Òrun who influence destiny on earth.

When ignored, Èlégbé may cause setbacks, disappointments, and loneliness.

When honored, it brings favor, support, and alignment with destiny (Ayànmọ̀).

It is appeased through Ifá divination, ebo (sacrifice), and offerings that invite sweetness, harmony, and companionship.

In the Yorùbá spiritual tradition, Òdù Ifá are the sacred scriptures or patterns of wisdom revealed through Ifá divination (consulting Orúnmila, the deity of wisdom and destiny).

There are 256 Òdù Ifá in total:

16 Major Odu (Ojú Odù / Mother Odu)

Each major odù has 16 derivatives (Omoluabi Odu), making 256 in all.

Each Òdù carries:

Sacred verses (ẹsẹ Ifá); poems, parables, proverbs, stories.

Guidance for human life; health, relationships, destiny, morality, and spiritual balance.

Prescriptions (ẹbọ / sacrifice, taboos, rituals) to realign one’s life with their destiny.

It’s both a spiritual system (divination, ritual, guidance) and a repository of knowledge (history, medicine, ethics, philosophy).
