Why Time in the Market Beats Timing the Market

Time in the market means staying invested for a long period. While Timing the market means trying to predict the best time to buy and sell.

Why staying invested can help

1. Markets can rise unexpectedly. You may miss strong gains if you're waiting for the “perfect” time to invest.

2. Compounding needs time. The longer your money stays invested, the more opportunity your returns have to generate additional returns.

3. Less stress. You don't need to constantly predict when prices will rise or fall.
Short-term movements are unpredictable. Even experienced investors can struggle to consistently buy at the lowest point and sell at the highest point.

Simple example
Imagine you invest regularly and leave your money invested for 20 years. Your investment has more time to experience market ups and downs and potentially grow.

You don't need to predict every market movement to build wealth; consistency and patience can be important.

Risk vs. Reward in Investing

Risk is the possibility of losing money or getting lower returns than expected.
Reward is the potential profit you can earn from an investment.

Low risk is usually lower potential returns
Higher risk is usually higher potential returns
Higher potential return does NOT guarantee higher actual returns.

Examples
1.Money market funds:
👉Lower risk
👉Lower potential returns
👉More stable

2. Bonds
👉Generally moderate risk
👉Moderate potential returns
Ta a tt
3. Stocks
👉Higher price fluctuations
👉Higher potential returns
👉Greater possibility of losing money

Before investing, consider:
👉How much money can I afford to lose?
👉How long can I leave the money invested?
👉How comfortable am I with price changes?

Simple rule:
👉 Don't take more risk than you can afford to handle.

How Compound Interest Builds Wealth

Compound interest means you earn returns not only on your original money, but also on the returns you have already earned.

Simple example
Suppose you invest ₦100,000 at 10% per year:
After 1 year → ₦110,000
After 2 years → ₦121,000
After 5 years → about ₦161,000
After 10 years → about ₦259,000
After 20 years → about ₦673,000

Why it grows faster

Your money earns money and those earnings earn more money and the cycle continues.
The key is time. The longer you leave your money invested and allow the returns to compound, the greater the potential growth.

How to Read a Stock Chart

A stock chart shows how a stock’s price changes over time.

1. Check the time period
Look at the bottom of the chart:
1D = 1 day
1W = 1 week
1M = 1 month
1Y = 1 year

2. Look at the price
The side of the chart shows the stock price.
Higher = price increased
Lower = price decreased

3. Look at the trend
Ask yourself:
Is the price generally going up?
Going down?
Moving mostly sideways?

4. Understand volume
Volume shows how many shares were traded.
High volume = lots of buying and selling
Low volume = less trading activity

5. If using a candlestick chart
Each candle shows the stock's:
Opening price
Closing price
Highest price
Lowest price

Simple rule:
📈 Rising price = buyers are generally stronger
📉 Falling price = sellers are generally stronger

Note: A chart shows what has happened in the past; it does not guarantee what will happen next.

Stocks vs. Money Market Funds

1. Stocks
👉You buy a small part of a company.
👉Your money can grow through price increases and dividends.
👉Higher risk because prices can rise or fall significantly.
👉Usually better for long-term investing.

2. Money Market Funds
👉Your money is invested in short-term, low-risk investments.
👉You mainly earn through interest.
👉Lower risk and generally more stable than stocks.
👉Often suitable for short-term goals or keeping money accessible.

Simply put:
Stocks = higher risk, higher potential returns.
Money market funds = lower risk, more stable returns.
