Pig Farming is profitable for an agriculture students to enback on because The reproduction period and system of pig is faster than any other livestock like cattle or goats.
Pig can convert more energy/nutrient into protein and as a result they grow faster than cattle, goats or other livestock animals.
Pigs can survive and produce more by consuming little amount of low quality foods. You can feed them roughage, kitchen garbage, agricultural waste etc. for the purpose of reducing feeding cost. Need less amount of investment. Although, investment depends on the size of your farm. Many Nigerians are experiencing malnutrition problem due to absence of sufficient protein in their regular food. By raising pigs, we can meet up this demand. A large amount of daily necessary protein derives from plant and a little amount from animals. Animal protein is very essential for human body because of it’s high biological value and contains the building stones for good health and proper growth. By raising pigs, we can easily meet up this demand, A sow generally give birth of piglets twice a year. Each time they give birth of 10 piglets (sometimes more). And the gestation period is not more than 114 days. So, you can go for large scale commercial production within very short time if you start with few pigs. Weather condition and geographical location of Nigeria is very suitable for pig farming. Very profitable business idea with great ROI (Return of Investment) ratio.

STARTING PIG FARMING
Pig farming in Nigeria can be a great source of employment and income. You can start raising pigs both in domestically and commercially. For commercial pig farming in Nigeria, follow the steps listed bellow.
Select Suitable Land
Before starting pig farming business in Nigeria, you must have to acquire a suitable land. The size or area of the land will depend on the scale of your pig farming business. The more pigs you want to raise, the more land will required. Divide the land into several plots. This will help you to raise different aged pigs separately. It will be better, if you can select a land far from the residential areas. Calm and quiet place will be very effective. While selecting land for pig farming business in Nigeria, keep in mind some necessary facilities.

Sufficient supply of fresh and clean water in the farm area. It would be better if there any pond, lake or other water source available.
The selected area will be very near to the market.
Far from the residential area.
Foods are available near the farm land.
Availability of all types of veterinary service
Buying Breeds: After selecting a suitable farm land, it is very important to select proper pig breeds/piglets. Because, profitability from pig farming in Nigeria mostly depends on selecting proper piglets. You can choose both local and hybrid piglets. For commercial purpose crossbreed of exotic and local breeds are very suitable. This types of crossbreed pigs consume more feed, grow faster and become healthier than other available breeds. There are various types of crossbreeds available. So, it might difficult for you to select the right breed for your pig farming business
Housing: Housing is very important for commercial pig farming in Nigeria. A good house can keep them healthy, productive and free from adverse climate and all types of predators. Housing also help the pigs to keep them warm during winter season and cold temperatures. It also help them to keep moderate temperature during excessive heat in summer season.
Feeding: Feeding good quality, fresh and nutritious food can make your pigs healthier and ensure proper growth, You can feed your pigs almost everything including roughage, kitchen garbage, agricultural waste, stalk from beverage companie.so feeding is not has expensive as other domestic animals like poultry
PIG MARKETING AS A STUDENT
As a student you can sell your piglet at winners stage or sold at maturity
Pigs probably have the highest profit potential of all farm animals because they eat almost everything, and produce more meat than cattle, a few entrepreneurs are already enjoying the lucrative benefits of this enterprise. Despite cultural and religious influences in parts of our country that limit pork consumption and production, demand for pig is rising!

We can raise pigs humanely to produce our high quality pork for events and piglets suitable for people who would like to start their own farm, imagine for a year you’re able to rear 200 pigs to maturity, you will be making N8, 000,000 from the sales. . Also, the manure can be subsequently collected and turned into an important component of fertilizers. You can sell it out to another farmer and make some money out of your pigs waste!

Note: Piggery is lucrative if you are farming with the right breeds of pigs

Cost Analysis for 100 layers
The poultry sector is one of the most organized and vibrant segments of the agriculture industry in Nigeria . This sector generates direct and indirect employment and income for about 1.5 million people. The daily increase in population as make the demand so high. Ironically so many people have been misguided into thinking poultry farming is a get rich quick venture with promises of making millions over a short period of time. IT IS NOT TRUE.
Below is a practical street analysis of raising 100 layer birds.

Analysis for 100 layers

Price of chick - #140
100*140=1400
The pullet doesn't eat like broiler so they require 1.5kg for 4weeks
1.5kg* 100=150kg
I. E 150kg/25kg= 6bags

From 4 week-8week they require 1.5kg-1.7kg
But let's use 1.5kg also
1.5kg*100=150kg/25kg=6 bags

Total of chick mash require =6+6 bags=12bags of chick mash
Each feed mash cost = #3500
12bags * 3500= #42,000

From 9-16 weeks
They require 4kg of feed,i.e 2kg per 4 weeks it is not certain but also depends on the breed and the temperature
4kg*100 birds weeks=400kg/25kg=16bags
A bag of grower is 2850 depends on the company feed
16*2900= #46,400
At 16weeks many people will start usin layer mash but is advisable to continue the grower feed till 20weeks of age.
16-20week they will consume 2kg also =2*100=200kg/25kg=8bags
8bags* #2900= #23,200
Summary :
Total bag between 9-20 weeks =24 bags of grower* 2900= #69,600

Total cost so far
Chick= #14000
Chick mash = #42000
Chick Grower = #69,600
Total = 125,600

For the drugs, the standard calculation = 125,600*5/100= #1850*4= #7,440
The price of medication 1850 for each month, we analysis for medication is 4 month.

For vaccination the standard price for each bird is #6 per week,(Gumboro and Lasota only) for 100= #600 per week. For four weeks=600*4= 2400.

Some necessary vaccination for layers

koromorov at 6weeks= #750 for 100 birds

Fowl pox at 8 weeks #700 per 100 dose.

Deworming at 10 weeks #450

Debeaking at 12 weeks #20 per bird= 2,000

Komorov at 16 weeks #750 per 100 dose

Total cost for vaccination = #7,050

Total cost so far =125,600+7,440+7,050= # 140,090

At 21 weeks they sud start Laying.
Will expect 70percent of the birds to be laying.
I. E 70 eggs per day.
We have 70eggs/ 30= 2.10 creates * 850= 1,785 in a day

Feeding per day of layers
100 layers require 12.5kg of feed per day.
Note 25kg of layer =3150, half will be #1575 per day

Profit per day will be = #1,785- #1575= #210.
In a month will have #210*30= #6,300 per month

For A year 12 month, the production usually rise and fall. Let's forfeit a month to Maintain the production standard.
6300*11= #69,300

Spend Layers will be sold
Let say we have 6% mortality and we have 94 birds on ground.

94*1200=112,800 for spent layers.

The total profit = 112,800 - 140,090 = #42,010

This analysis make not be achieved if BIOSECURITY measures is not strictly follow.

Note: for every 6 weeks you do Lasota, which prevents Newcastle, and serve as egg booster.

Medication should also be given at this age I. E., Vitamins, anticoci, and anti biotics should be done at 6 weeks interval

Farming is, no doubt, a very lucrative business and becoming well known around the globe. Lots of people, both old and young, are now delving and swerving the steering of income in agricultural directions. Farm record keeping is one of the important aspects of farming that can make or mar a farm enterprise. There are different types of farm records that can be kept to monitor the progress of the farm.

Farming as we all know has different sectors and every sector is very relevant in the economy building as they are interwoven in terms of their operation. Talk of crop production; it is a source of animal feed. Also, the wastes of these animals are reused for fertilizer to increase the yield. This is zero farming techniques where there is maximum utilization of resources.

This farming system is indeed a very lucrative one and this is what most successful farmers implement. But, one important yet neglected aspect a farm manager must give preference is farm record keeping. A farm manager must be a record keeper because farm records are indicators of success or failure in every farm enterprise; it will show the state of the business.

Recording keeping has countless benefits and it is necessary a clever farm manager embraces the habit of farm record keeping. There are different types of record keeping in agriculture, I will elucidate some farm records and how relevant they are in the success of the farming business.

The 8 types of farm records you must keep as a farm manager

1. Farm Diary:

Farm diary record is the farm record book that houses the daily activities of a farm and the farmer. This farm record keeping book is very important as it serves as a reference book to obtain past information on the farm. Examples in poultry farming, where a farm manager needs to vaccinate his birds or give the birds so medications at a particular period. It is very normal for humans to forget things easily, once this farmer has a farm diary to input the date and time for the operation. He will carry this out and it will prevent future outbreak of any potential threat or menace on his farm.

However, it is not a farm diary record if it is not used daily. It has to serve the purpose it is intended for. As a farmer, it is imperative you keep farm records and accounts of what happens in your farm daily. This will enhance the progress of the farm.

2. The cash book and payment receipt:

This is one of the types of farm records a good farmer should take note, cash book and payment receipt is a farm record book of all financial transactions, both the income and expenditure, of the farm. With it, a farm manager can access loans, detect fraudulent practices and know the state of the business. It is a farm accounting record book. In addition, the farm manager can make productive decision based on the figures present in the record.

3. Annual valuation record:

It is imperative that at the end of each production year, a farmer should evaluate his or her venture to know the current state of the business. The farm strength and weakness have to be determined; this is only possible when the farmer has the annual valuation record. This farm record keeping book shows the value of stocks present on the farm from the beginning of the year to the end. It will aid decision making to prepares the farm plan for the next production year.

4. Farm inventory:

This is the farm record book that shows the lists of all the items present on the farm at a particular time, examples are farm equipment, farm building, farm plots, furniture, etc.

Farm inventory shows all the equipment and their value also the current state of the equipment, the record is usually taken at the beginning and end of the production year.

A good inventory record can assist farmers to get bank loan.

5. Yield and production record:

This is one of the essential farm records to be kept in a farm, it is the farm record that shows the yield or output of the farm. For both animal and crop production; the daily or seasonal production rate is recorded in the record. It contains the numbers of eggs laid per day or the sizes of litter after farrow or the tonnes of crop harvested per season.

It shows the success rate of the farm during the production year.

6. Payroll and labour record:

This is another cogent farm record book, it shows the amount and types of labour hired or employed to work on the farm. Also present in this record is the rate and wages paid, this record enhances transparency on the farm.

7. Farm input utilization record

This farm record book shows all the input acquired and utilized during the production year, it shows the relevance of a particular input in the production. It shows the level of input application and it is also used in combination with output record to determine resources productivity.

8. Profit and loss record:

This is the principal record; it shows the economic level of the business. This farm accounting record is the only record most farmers tends to keep, however, the aforementioned records are prerequisite to this record.

This farm record book is normally prepared at the end of every production period, usually at the end of the year to determine whether the business is making profit or otherwise.

These are the types of farm records an aspiring successful farmer must prepare and keep; they are computer aided farm records. The importance of farm records is copious and cannot be overruled; the uses of farm record:

Procurement of bank loan.

Aids productive decision making.

Help to detect fraudulent practices.

It helps to know the economic status of the farm.

It shows the strength and weakness of a farm

Record keeping in agriculture is very important; I implore every farmer to take note of these records.

Feeding takes the highest percentage in poultry production. It accounts for about 75 percent of the total cost of production. Chicken feeding guide varies with species of poultry birds; feeding chicken in the right quantity and quality will greatly improve the productivity of the enterprise and increase the efficiency of the poultry feed. Chicken growth stages also play an important role in the feeding of chicken. They have different nutritional requirements at different stages of growth; the nutrient requirements of poultry vary with several factors; such as:

Age

Health status

Prevailing environmental condition

Nutrient availability.

Purpose of production.

There are different types of poultry feeds, not the brand name but the physical presentation of the feed. We have:

Pellets

Mash

Crumbs

Mash is commonly served to chickens because of its simplicity and it costs less compare to pellet and crumbs. However, pellet is the best type of poultry feeds as it allows even delivery of nutrients. Laying chickens fed with chicken layer pellets would have excellent access to all the nutrients available in the feed and lay maximally.

Overview of chicken feeding guide

It is very imperative to know the physiology of chickens before feeding them; this will enable the farmer to know what to feed chickens naturally, what not to feed chickens and possibly determine the cheap ways to feed chickens. Chickens are monogastric animals; this means that they have simple stomach like humans. However, they do not eat like humans.

Chickens, irrespective of their age, will primarily eat to satisfy their energy requirement. As soon as this is met, chickens stop to eat. But in humans, we eat to satiation. In poultry feeding guide, chicken diet is formulated around the energy requirement of the chicken.

There are two species of poultry birds; The meat type and the egg type.

The meat type is the broiler chicken while the egg type is the laying chicken. The nutrient requirements of these chickens are not the same. There is difference between broiler feed and layer feed; this is because the nutrient composition of chicken layer feed will stimulate egg laying while broiler feed will stimulate rapid growth rate.

Chicks feeding program.

The chick’s phase of the chicken growth stages starts from a day-old to 4weeks of age. During this period, several medication and attention are paid to the chicks, especially the feeding. Heat is very important during this phase to activate the appetite of chicks, making them feed well. What to feed chicks is not the same as what you feed laying chicken. Day old chicks are fed chick starter feed; Layer pullet chicks need 18 to 21% protein chicken starter.

This type of chicken feed is usually high in nutrients, about 23% CP for starter feed for broiler chicks. This poultry feed allows rapid growth and development of the tissues, bone formation and enhance overall performance during this phase of the chicken growth stages.

The amount of feed per chicken during brooding is not usually determined as chicks are feed Ad-libitum. Chick starter feed is served in a plastic chicken feeder because of easy cleaning and handling during the first 10 days of brooding. After 10 days, feeds should be served in gravity chicken feeder or PVC chicken feeder in preparation of the other growth stages. Water is one of the important nutrient requirements of poultry. In absence of chicken feed, water must surely be present. Water should be served using a clean chicken water feeder.

As chicken feed to satisfy their energy requirement, chicks pick up all the energy sources in the chick starter diet. Broiler chickens requires high energy diet; a broiler feed contains 3200Kcal/kg, from day old to market size, usually 8 weeks and above. When the energy content is too low, chicks will eat more to satisfy their energy requirements; however, high energy diet will make chicks eat less. When chicks eat less, there is high tendency of deficiency of some nutrients as the chicks will not fully utilize the feed.

Layers feeding programme

Chicken layer feed specification is different from broiler feed. Layer ration should not contain more than 16-17% Crude Protein (CP) and energy of 2745-3000 kcal/ kg. Laying birds come to lay at around 16 weeks; during the beginning of lay, layers can be fed a CP of 18% to prepare their physiological system for laying. When layers fully come to lay, the standard layer feed should comprise 17% CP. The Layer feed is classified into 3 with different composition, according to NRC 1994:

The Starter feed for Layer pullet chicks should contains 18-20% CPand energy content of about 3000 Kcal/kg. The pullet feed should be fed from 0-6 weeks.

The Grower feed which contains14-16% CP and energy content of about 3000Kcal/kg. this pullet feed should be fed from 6 weeks to 12 weeks of age.

Developer or pre-layer diet which contains about 12-14%CP and energy content of about 3000 Kcal/kg. This layer feed should be maintained from 12 weeks till lay, approximately 20 weeks.

In early laying hens, that come to lay at 16 weeks, pullets are fed grower feed or pullet feed prior to laying, from 8 weeks to 16 weeks.

When to start feeding chickens laying mash is dependent on the time of sign of laying. In some birds, it is very fast, 16 weeks, while some is as late as 22 weeks. The genetic makeup of the chicken determines the period of laying. Do not feed layer ration or layer feed to laying hens immediately after the commencement of lay; this is because their reproductive system has not fully developed to handle the egg production processes.

It is therefore advisable to continue feeding with the pullet feed as laying commence till about two weeks. This is when to switch from chick starter to layer feed. Feed consumption of layers is controlled by the length of the daylight and temperature. The longer the daylight, the more the hens eat. Laying hens feed consumption increases with light. During hot weather condition, laying hens generate lots of energy, hence the layer feed should contain less energy, 2745 kcal/ kg is better. On the other hand, during cold weather condition, chicken generate less energy, hence relatively higher energy layer ration should be served.

Generally, at high temperature, feed intake is high, leading to high energy generation. Layer feed should contain more of protein during this period, 17-18% CP. However, during cold weather condition, feed intake is low; high energy chicken layer feed should be served with relatively low protein content, 16 % CP. The best chicken feed is not always achievable as chicken feed varies with nutrient composition, the environmental conditions and purpose of production. What to feed chickens to lay eggs is not the same as what to feed broiler chicken for meat production.

The best chicken feed for laying hens is that feed that is flexibly formulated to blend with the layer chicken feed requirements and environmental conditions.

Feeding schedule for broilers

Broiler chickens are genetically bred for meat production; they attain market weight faster than other chicken breeds. Broiler feed ration is characterized by high protein content and energy; this specification conforms with their genetic make-up. There are two types of broiler feed, namely:

Starter feed for broiler chicks

Broiler chicken finisher feed

The starter feed for broiler chicks is fed to broiler chicks between the ages of 0-4 weeks. During this period, aside from the broiler feed, heat is very important as earlier stated. The broiler starter mash contains a very high CP of 23-24%and energy content of 3200Kcal/kg. The broiler chicken finisher diet should be fed from 5 weeks to 8 weeks, ideally. This broiler feed contains a CP of 20-22%and equal energy content as the starter diet.

When broiler feed is fed in the right quantity and quality, the chicken grows faster and healthier. For effective costing; you need to know amount of feed per chicken. In the case of broiler; how much does a broiler chicken eat from day old to adult weight? Ideally, a broiler chicken will consume 2.5kg to 4kg or more of broiler feed, depending on the predetermined market age. There are several broiler tips on how to get bigger broiler chicken; all are functions of good feeding schedule for broilers.

Poultry feed supplement

At times, the poultry ration needs to be supplemented to improve the nutritional value of the poultry feed. Poultry feed supplement is always in form of premixes which is commercially available. Supplement are added to several types of poultry feeds.

For layer feed, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D are very important for the production of good quality shell and bone formation. Calcium requirement varies with age, ambient temperature, rate of lay and egg size. Generally, laying hen requires 3.4g of calcium per day and 3.8g of calcium per day after 40 weeks of age.

Lack of calcium in layer chicken diet can result in thin shelled eggs, lost egg production, cannibalism and egg eating. Feeding egg shells as a source of calcium is not satisfactory because of the poor digestibility of the shells. Laying hens need about 4% calcium in their diet.

Also, in broiler chicken feed, they require Calcium and Phosphorus for bone formation majorly to carry the weight, thus avoiding leg problem as the chicken grows. Calcium and phosphorus are added at a ratio of 2:1 in any chicken diet. A good source of calcium such as limestone or oyster shell must be included in the diet or in a hanging feeder.

A successful poultry farmer needs a pragmatic chicken feeding guide; where precise nutrient requirements of poultry birds are included at different ages. The efficiency of the feed is very important as it helps to maximize utility of the feed and minimize the cost of production.

Sharing is caring!

Entrepreneurship: My experience so far.

While it's a good thing to advise people to start their own business, the hard truth is that being an entrepreneur is tough. It sucks everything out of you- time, money, physical and mental energy etc.

As an entrepreneur, the workload can be intense especially during the early stages, which i can still consider myself to be in after 6 years, when you are the CEO, accountant, HR person, sales staff, marketer, IT guy, and manager. With all these roles, there's no rest. There's always something else to do, like developing new products and researching the markets, writing press releases, developing media contents, managing the social media accounts, seeing clients, chasing production etc. And for those with a family like i do, it's so damn difficult to maintain a balance.

Permit me to share with you some nuggets of information, which i have garnered so far. This is not an exhaustive list of points on the discussion and are not listed in any order of importance.

- The life of an entrepreneur is like that of an animal in the wild. You hustle daily for your survival. You hunt or starve. You kill or be killed (not literally).

- Before you start, have a plan B.

- While you are at it, have a 2nd income and a 3rd and 4th if possible. In essence, have multiple streams of income.

- When making business decisions, always think like you are on a zero budget. Think creatively!

- Avoid taking high interest loans as a start up. The pressure of running a sole business is enough.

- Work on product/service improvement more than anything else.

- Work with your heart but make decisions with your head.

- Maintain low overheads. Build a business model that keeps your overhead at the barest minimum.

- Don't hire an extra hand if you can barely pay yourself.

- Hold off any personal gratification or pleasures until you are sure you deserve it.

- Forget glamour. Focus on your product and services.

- Know or Learn the core of your business.

- Never ignore reality. It doesn't mean you are negative. Running a business is not all about fantasy. Make projections, but act on reality.

- The statement that '£1 is better than zero sales' is not always true. Never lose sight of the bigger picture.

- Sometimes it's better to turn down some customers (politely) than to accept their devaluing patronage.

- If there are loopholes in the market, system or anywhere, exploit them.

- Don't place your hustling instinct above your reputation. Reputation is key!

- Be very careful of those customers who'll ask for special discounts with the promise of refferals or directing business your way. While it's true that some of them will bring you business, they would equally have devalued your business by telling their friends not to offer you more than a certain price. Once you sense this pattern, just stop business with ALL of them.

- ALWAYS remember that offering discount is not the only means of attracting customers.

- A good product/service, targeted at the right audience will sell regardless of the price.

- Don't sell at cheap and hurt in silence. Charge what you think you are worth and don't be sorry for it. Allow the customer walk away if they cannot afford you.
It's better for people to say that you are expensive than to label your products/services as poor.

- Always remember it's about the process not the result. If the results are unfavourable, focus on the positives in the process which you can build on to become better. This approach is the same when the results are what you were expecting. Don't get carried away in celebrating the success that you forget the need for continual improvement. Stay focused and committed to a change system which eventually will lead you to an efficient process which guarantees consistent extra ordinary results.

- Make mistakes but don't make a habit out of them.

- Never operate outside the limits of your competencies.

- Start small.

Having said all these things, i must say that i'm grateful for the privilege i have to do what i truly love, the opportunity to express my creativity and the flexibility and freedom that comes as part of the package. As stressful and frustrating as it is, i wouldn't trade it for another option because knowing myself, i'm not wired to work for people. This not out of arrogance, i just love to be free and spontaneous.
