Today is World Environment Day. It is a day set aside by the United Nations to encouraging awareness and action for the Protection of our Environment. The Theme for this year's celebration is BEAT AIR POLLUTION.
SOME INTERESTING FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AIR POLLUTION
1. Nine out of 10 people worldwide breathe polluted air. Air pollution is identified as the most important health issue of our time, causing 1 in 9 deaths globally and an estimated 7 million premature deaths every year.
2. Nearly about 1 million of Air Pollution related deaths occur in Africa
3. Air pollution has been a major cause of Heart diseases, Strokes, Lung Cancer, Chronic and Acute respiratory diseases including Asthma
4. The good news is that successful air quality management programs can reduce emissions that lead to air pollution, while simultaneously providing other development benefits that accrue both locally and globally.
5. Air is a complex mixture made up of many natural chemical components; however, these components are not present in equal amounts
6. The major components of the Air are Nitrogen (78%) Oxygen (21%) and Water Vapour and other minor gases (< 1%).
7. Human activities have had a detrimental effect on the makeup of air. Activities such as driving cars and trucks, burning of coal, oil and other fossil fuels, and open or agricultural burning have changed the composition of air by introducing many pollutants.
8. The two basic physical forms of air pollutants are particulate matter and gases. Particulate matter includes small solid and liquid particles such as dust, smoke, sand, pollen, mist, or fly ash. Gases include substances such as carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO2), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
9. Fine particulate matter, ozone or smog and gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO2), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the most common forms of air pollution. There are other common forms of air pollution, but ozone and fine particulates are the most widespread and detrimental to human health.
10. One Major source of human-generated air pollution or “anthropogenic” pollution include Mobile sources of air pollution including most forms of transportation such as automobiles, trucks, and airplanes as well as non-road engines such as diesel generators or construction equipment.
11. Another major source of of human-generated air pollution is from Stationary sources consisting of non-moving sources such as power plants and industrial facilities.
12. Benefits of Air Pollution Management can include improved public health, energy savings, economic development, agricultural benefits and reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other short-lived climate pollution.
WHAT YOUR ORGANISATION CAN DO TO BEAT AIR POLLUTION
As a company, the First thing you need to do is to know the current Air Quality Level in and around your company. This can be done through Air Quality Monitoring. Once you have established the Baseline Ambient Air Quality of your facility, you can then set Air Pollutants Reductions Goals (If any Air Pollutants are present as a result of your company's operations). You can do so by taking the following actions:
Make a pledge to use recyclable materials for your products.
Host a company tree planting day.
Use World Environment Day to ensure your power supply is renewable.
Think about using fresh air ventilation for cooling or install ultra-efficient, hydrofluorocarbon-free cooling.
Make a pledge to buy low-emission or electric vehicles for the company fleet.
Consider how you can reduce emissions of air pollutants from facilities and supply chains.
Get your colleagues to commit to trekking or riding a Bicycle to work more often than they use Hydrocarban powered vehicles.
