The flooding devastating Abuja right now is not a weather event. It is a systems failure. 🌊
Wuse 2. Maitama. Lokogoma. Gudu. Mabushi. Some of Abuja's most developed districts are underwater and the question being asked across the FCT is the same one.
How did we get here. And who is responsible.
No single cause explains what we are seeing. This is the collision of climate change, infrastructural design choices that prioritised aesthetics over drainage, regulatory oversights that allowed structures onto natural waterways, and civic behaviours that have treated drainage channels as dumping grounds for years.
The FCTA is ordering demolitions. That is a start. But demolitions without a long-term structural plan are just visible action in the absence of visible solutions.
Abuja was a planned city. A city designed from scratch should not flood like this.

⚡ Powering Communities: What Will It Take for AMAC to Turn Renewable Energy Commitments into Reality?

A climate action plan only means something once it leaves the page. For a business owner in Utako, a family in Kabusa, or a clinic in Jiwa, the energy transition isn't a distant policy conversation. It shows up in simple questions:

Is there reliable power to keep a shop or a livelihood running?
Is clean, safe cooking fuel within reach?
Are the streets lit and safe at night?

Under its Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP), AMAC has set a clear benchmark: a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions against business-as-usual by 2030, anchored by a Stationary Energy Pillar built around decentralized solar, efficient lighting, and integrated waste management.

The target is the easy part. The harder questions are the ones that decide whether it becomes real:

Financing – how are these systems funded and sustained beyond installation?
Skills and jobs – who is trained to maintain them, and are young people in these communities part of that pipeline?
Equity – do rural and underserved wards get the same attention as central Abuja?
Accountability – how is impact actually measured and verified?

GeIS and EFI at the Electoral Round Table: "Reclaiming Our Vote"
On 13th August 2026, we will be at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, for the Electoral Round Table, "Reclaiming Our Vote: Enfranchising a New Generation of Voters." The conversation runs from 12 Noon WAT and brings together INEC, the National Orientation Agency, civic society groups, and youth voter education advocates to look at what it will take to get more young Nigerians registered and engaged ahead of future elections.

The panel includes Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN (Chairman, INEC), Prof. (Amb.) Iyke Aliechal, Lilian Azu (COO, Humanitarian Foundation for Social Justice), Amirat Salaudeen, and Dr. Gerald Esemonu (Executive Director-EFI), also representing Organized Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). The event is organized by Create Studio, in partnership with The Humanitarian Foundation for Social Justice, Environmental Friendly Initiative (EFI), INEC, the National Orientation Agency, and other civic institutions.

Green-Eco Innovative Solutions Limited (GeIS) and Environmental Friendly Initiative (EFI) are joining this conversation with Dr. Gerald on the panel representing CSOs, and with our team mobilizing civil society organisations to be in the room. This is where our work in ESG and the green economy comes in: waste management, renewable energy, carbon credits, and climate-smart agriculture all depend on policy decisions, and policy follows the people who get elected. We see voter enfranchisement and sustainability as connected, not separate conversations, which is why we are calling this push ‘Vote for Climate’: helping citizens see the link between who represents them and what happens to their environment, their land, and their livelihoods.
