Do you find it hard to follow some of the self-care routines advertised outside? Whether it's because you don't know what you need to do, or because you're just too busy all the time. Like many others, you keep putting off your self-care plans for later.

But taking some time for yourself is incredibly beneficial for your mental health and general well-being, and it can be surprisingly easy to do. Although self-care varies from person to person, certain aspects such as reducing stress, eating better, and getting enough sleep, serve as the foundation for self-care. So, if you don't know where to start, here are the six simple self-care tips to become a better you.

Get some tools to live intentionally every day here

Make A Sleep Routine:

Do you have a consistent time to go to bed? Practicing self-care is easier when you create a routine because it mentally prepared you to disconnect. And it's especially helpful when it comes to going to bed. If you find that you have trouble falling asleep, try to create a plan that prepares you for bedtime. Drinking water before bed or reading a book to wind down are some things you could try.

Some even say that dimming the lights before sleeping works well as it signals your brain to start producing melatonin, the sleep hormone. This tip works great especially if you spend hours in front of a computer or phone.

Eating Mindfully:

Are you mindful of what you eat? While working out is always mentioned in self-care articles, what you put into your body is also equally important. Apart from how it affects your physical well-being, it also can play a role in your mental health.

Consider the 100 million nerve cells that line your gastrointestinal tract that is in constant communication with your brain. According to an article published in 2017, inflammation of your bowels may be one of the causes of issues like stress, anxiety, and depression. Ultimately, you might want to consider making it your goal to eat better to feel better rather than only to look better.

Create And Enforce Boundaries:

Do you set boundaries with other people? While some may falsely believe that boundaries exist to deliberately exclude certain types of people from your life, it doesn't. Although it can end up doing that, boundaries primarily exist as a reminder that you need to take care of yourself first. They serve as guidelines for other people on how they should approach and treat you. It can also save you from a lot of emotional, or mental distress and help you foster better relationships with other people.

Disconnect:

Are you always plugged into your computer or your phone? This may be difficult to do, especially with how much your work and personal life require you to be online all the time, but taking time to disconnect is important for your mental well-being. Whether it's because you scrolling through your phone to look at the news, social media, or because of work, looking at your screen for a long period without breaks is an unhealthy habit.

This is why you must spend some time offline as well. Perhaps, you can go for a walk, do some yoga, or get involved in a hobby. Whatever it is, being disconnected from your screens from time to time can help you clear your mind and relieve stress.

Organize Inside And Out:

What does your room look like? The environment around you can affect your mental health. Researchers have shown that a disorganized home can contribute to depression, anxiety, and weight gain. So, if you find yourself surrounded by a lot of clutter and mess, it may be time to start organizing things around you.

Whether it's looking for what sparks your joy or just sorting through your things one by one. You can start to take the steps to create a more tidy and clean environment for yourself and your mental well-being.

Do Something You Love:

Are there hobbies that you love doing? When most people think about self-care, it's probably something that involves dancing around to your favorite music. While you might think it's cheesy, the point is that you're doing something fun.

Ultimately, self-care is about you, so do something that makes you happy. Whether it's reading a book, or going for a run, like other people, doing something you love and making yourself happy is essential in caring for yourself.

Self-care is a necessity and not a luxury. It's giving the world the best of you, and not what's left of you, plus you are setting yourself up to function at your very best.

Which tip did you find most helpful? Let's know in the comment section.

Why would the farmer put the plow in the ground in the spring if he couldn't see the vision of the harvest when the summer is finished? Is it possible to see the finished harvest and the answer is Yes? We do that simply by faith. Faith is the ability to see things that don't yet exist. That's how things exist.

How did this hotel get here? Someone saw it while the property was vacant. Is it possible to see this hotel when it isn't here and the answer is Yes? If somebody cannot see it when it is not here, then it will never be here. So, it's possible to see things that don't yet exist.

Human beings have this remarkable ability to finish something and then start it. We've heard the old expression don't count your chicks until they're hatched. They know we can count our chickens long before they're hatched because we know we have faith. So, it's possible to see the end and then begin.

Start looking into the future of what you would like to accomplish, where you would like to go, and the person you'd like to be, and see if you can get a better picture of the finished objective. See yourself there, see yourself in possession of it. Decide what you want and then act as if you already have it. The reason we can act thinking that it is already ours is that not only do we visualize the result, but we can also vision the beginning of making it real.

Also read, The Harder You Try, The Worse It Gets (Law Of Reversed Effort)

We don't start till it's finished but human beings can finish something before it starts. Human beings are the only life on earth that has the incredible capacity to change the course of their life. No other life form can do that. Every other life form except humans seems to operate simply by instinct in the genetic code.

Human beings can alter the course of their life. Human beings can live one way for five years, tear up that script, and live a different way for the next five years. No other life form can do this. If you were a tree, you'd be stuck. As a tree, if you used up all the nourishment that was around you and you couldn't change location, you would die. Human beings can change location. Go north, south, east, west. Live here for a while, live somewhere else for a while.

If you keep up your discipline and keep up the present pace that you're on, where will you be in five years? It's easy to say, I haven't thought about that. In five years, here's the probability. You will either arrive at a well-designed destination or an undesigned destination. Five years from now, you'll not want to arrive at an undesigned destination because you may very well wind up wearing what you don't want to wear, driving what you don't want to drive, living where you don't want to live, maybe doing what you don't want to do simply because you didn't design a better destination.

Upfront the decisions are easy sometimes after we've lived a few years. To repair our mistakes and get back on track seems like a tough job. If you've messed up your health for ten years, it takes more than ten days to get it back. If you start early, the fortune belongs to you. All fortunes that are available to humans, if you start early, the promise looms large and the odds are heavily in your favor. Yes, it's possible to do some radical things starting late and still arrive with some good treasures, but when you haven't got that much time left, sometimes the decision has to be so drastic.

We face the direction we design. Direction determines the destination. The destination is not determined by hope. It's not determined by a wish. The destination is determined by direction. You cannot change your destination overnight. Here's what you can change overnight. A few decisions in a change of behavior, change of habit, and setting goals that you've sort of let drift before. The joy of productivity and the joy of becoming valuable. It's only a small journey in a new direction. You don't have to radically do something. You can gain momentum and make changes as you go, just start.

Here's what happens when you start a new direction, self-esteem starts to accelerate. It doesn't take much for you to feel good about yourself. Just committed to a new direction and feel good.

Have you ever tried petting a cat, but every time you come closer, that cat runs away and keeps watching you from a distance? Then, you walk toward the cat in a second attempt, but it runs away again. When you approach the cat a third time, it flees and disappears. However, a few hours later, when you've focused your attention on something else, the cat appears, walks toward you, and jumps onto your lap.

A phenomenon we often experience is that when we chase something or someone, it moves away from us. But when we leave it alone, it comes to us. This mechanism can be hard to reconcile with the idea that effort is the key to success. Even though it's true that achieving goals often requires work, there's also another side to the story.

Also read, Develop A Lifestyle, Learn How To Live.

The law of Reversed effort shows us that, in many situations, putting in work only removed us further from the desired outcome. The more we try, the worse it gets, but the less we try, the better it gets. Hence, achieving goals doesn't just require work; we also must abstain from action. And to know when to act and when not to, we need intelligence and skill.

In this post, we'll explore the law of reversed effort from the viewpoint of performance, achieving goals, and overcoming fears. The law of reversed effort was once coined by English writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley who stated that we only achieve proficiency by combining relaxation with activity. I quote: The harder we try with the conscious will to do something, the less we shall succeed. Proficiency and the results of proficiency come only to those who have learned the paradoxical art of doing and not doing or combining relaxation with activity.

Imagine an insomniac trying to sleep. The more he tries, the longer he seems to stay awake. The longer he stays awake, the more frustrated he becomes and the harder he tries. But after a while, the insomniac stops trying to accept that he can't sleep, suddenly without any effort, he dozes off. Sleep is one of those many things we cannot force. Yet, we often try hard to fall asleep, with horrible results.

Another thing we cannot force is attraction. No one chooses to be attracted to someone or something, it just happens. Even though this is a generalization, by and large, we see that clinginess repels, and elusiveness attracts. The more we chase someone, the less attractive we become. But if we stop chasing, we become more elusive and the attraction may return. As the proverb goes: " absence makes the heart grow fonder". Trying too hard often backfires.

Philosopher and Psychiatrist Victor Frankl observed that when we focus too much on achieving specific outcomes (and preventing others) we generate "anticipatory anxiety". In many cases, this hyper-intention leads to situations we try to avoid. If we try too hard to enjoy ourselves, we're probably not enjoying ourselves because we're so fixated on results that the fixation itself is unpleasant. The more we try, the worst it gets. The more we chase the people we desire, the more they run from us. The harder we try to sell something, the fewer sales we tend to make. But if we don't act at all, we won't see any results either.

We are looking for a middle path between action and non-action, between conscious effort and letting action occur. On the other hand, conscious effort seems necessary to develop our skills. We need to practice, learn, think, understand and analyze. On the other hand, the absence of conscious effort and intellectual activity seems necessary for letting the developed skills emerge naturally. We have to calm our minds and get out of our way, so to speak to perform optimally.

Paradoxically, optimal performance requires us to relax, stop trying, and let our activities emerge and happen automatically.

Of all the parts of our life we want to work well, perhaps the most important is a lifestyle. My wise friend gave me one of his strongest concepts when he said don't just learn how to earn, learn how to live. That's what lifestyle is all about.

Learning how to live. Here's one of the great challenges of life. Being happy with what you have while in pursuit of what you want. Now consider this. Some people have plenty of beautiful things filling their days but they get little happiness from them. Some people have money but they have trouble finding joy in their lives. Imagine a father squeezing paper money and throwing it at his son saying, 'here if you need the damn money that bad, take it. Same money, poor style. Remember it's not the amount that counts, it's the style that counts.

Also read, How To Rediscover And Redefine Your Life.

Remember the challenge is to get joy from your life and what you have to share. It is not the amount that counts. It's the uniqueness, the love, and the attitude that counts. Even people of modest means can experience a sophisticated lifestyle. They simply learn how to save up some of their Pepsi money for a bottle of fine wine. Don't spend all your money a quarter at a time. Save up and buy something of special value.

For a sophisticated person, a few may be better than many. Better a few treasures than a house full of junk. Lifestyle is a matter of awareness, values, education, and disciplined taste. It is an art that brings joy in its practice. Not just a subject to be studied. It is a deliberate decision to savor and enjoy all the experiences and possibilities of life. Remember all good things are upstream, a conscious act from a unique thought. That's where the pleasure is and the act serves as a bridge between dreams and reality. So, develop your lifestyle a little more. Your style of seeing, giving, sharing, and enjoying. It's not the amount that counts, but the experience of choosing to live with style.

Also read, How To Rediscover And Redefine Your Life.

The key to happiness is not more. Happiness is an art to be studied in practice. More money will only make you more of what you already are. If you're inclined to be unhappy, if you get a lot of money you will be miserable. More money will only amplify you more. If you are inclined to be mean and you get a lot of money, you will be a terror. If you are inclined to drink a little too much, when you get a lot of money, you can now become a drunk because you can drink everything.

Lifestyle is reserved for those who are willing to study and practice the higher arts of life. Lifestyle is culture, music, dance, art, sculpture, literature, plays, and concerts. Lifestyle is a taste of the fine, the better, the best. If we don't go for the higher taste, we will settle for the lower one. Develop an appetite for the unique things in life. Study the art and reach for the best to have the best in the time we have available to us. That is the quest. Remember it's not the amount, it's the imagination.

Don't miss anything you can enjoy. Be sure you live your life in style. Here's something else to think about. Did you ever hear where the expression tip came from, as in tipping the waiter or waitress in a restaurant? It began as a symbol for the phrase to ensure promptness. If a tip is to ensure promptness, when should you give it? Do you give it up front? Sophisticated people don't take a chance on good service, they ensure good service by giving the money upfront. Wow, what a way to live. Life in style is also life and balance. Make sure you pay attention to all the values and dimensions of your life. One of them is family. If you have someone you care about, there is no value to match that. One person caring for another is living in the best of style and value.

There are many treasures but the greatest of these is Love. Better to live in a tent on the beach and have a love affair than to live in a mansion by yourself. The family must be cultivated like an enterprise, like a garden. Time and effort in imagination, creativity, and genius must be summoned constantly to keep it flourishing and growing.

Next is friendship. A priceless value friendship. Friends are those incredible people who know all about you and still like you. Friends are those people coming in when everyone else is leaving. Be sure to make the kind of friends on your way up who will take you in on your way down. Life is a bit of both up and down but with true friends, friends who care regardless of your circumstance, the ups are more automatic and the down less devastating. When friendship is so vitally important to those in search of the good life, make sure your friends get the attention and effort they deserve. Properly nourished, they will give back to you that priceless treasure of both pleasure and satisfaction called the good life.

Remember, the good life is not in the amount, the good life is an attitude, an act, an idea, a discovery, a search. The good life comes from a lifestyle that is fully developed regardless of your bank account. It provides you with a constant sense of joy and living and fuels the fire of commitment to all of the disciplines and fundamentals that make life worthwhile.

Get intentional tools to live a more meaningful, fulfilled, successful, happy, healthy, beautiful, supportive, adventurous, purposeful, connected, and balanced life here.

What is wealth without character? Industry without arts? Quantity without quality? Enterprise without satisfaction? Possessions without joy?

Become that person of unusual substance that brings an added measure of genius to the whole, so that our children and the children of many will be the beneficiaries of the treasure.

Something's been bugging me lately and that is the fact that it seems like people feel that they have the right to tell me who I am based on who I used to be or based on minimal information about who I was in the past life. Does this happen to anyone else? Most of the time its family members, close friends, colleagues, etc. They make assumptions about you or think they know you when you have changed and grown in a way they can't even imagine? I'm tired of it.

In this post, I'm giving you a bit of my story and how you too can redefine who you are.

When you are on a journey of any kind, whether a journey of self-exploration or any kind of journey that will change the person you use to be, people around you will tend to keep you on a time frame and in a space in time and history that you have moved past and what that can end up doing is making you feel like you just don't know who you are anymore. It can cause an identity crisis. They're trying to figure out who you are now in comparison to who you were maybe a year ago or two years ago. The thing is that most times when people on the outside are keeping you in a box, it's usually because it makes them feel more comfortable.

It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with if they see that you are making certain changes. If you are making certain shifts in your life and they are not, it makes them uncomfortable, and as human beings, we don't like to be uncomfortable. Therefore, consciously or subconsciously they will make certain comments like, 'you would never do that, who do you think you are?' and a plethora of other things because it helps them stay in their safety net.

The first way that you can rediscover and redefine yourself is:

You Identify What Your Current Values Are:

Not the values you held a year ago, not the values you held ten years ago. What are your current values? What is your current belief system? Because again it changes. Things happen and your belief system, your values, and your morals might change and that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as you're not hurting anyone but you have to identify what your current belief system and values are. If you don't know that, you leave space for other people to tell you what your beliefs and values are. So, figure out your values, what is it that you stand for, your religious stance, your political stance, your belief system about some important things, etc.

Try New Things:

Try the things that you've always wanted to try but maybe you were discouraged from trying them because of what other people had to say and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. We all care about our family's opinions and our friend's opinions but don't let their opinion put you off from whatever things you've always wanted to do that fall within the current framework of who you think you are.

Do Uncharacteristic Things:

Things that maybe you're even a little afraid to do but they push you out of your comfort zone. At some point, you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone or you're not going to grow. Comfort and growth cannot live in the same space. You have to be uncomfortable to grow. When you push yourself out of your comfort zone, you redefine yourself. Yeah sure, when you do that for yourself and other people see that as well, they'll be shocked. Do something that you want to do that you're afraid to do because it will challenge you to define who you are.

Figure Out What Makes You Unhappy:

If you can identify what makes you unhappy, you can remove those things from your life. Whether it is a person, job, relationship, whatever it might be. If you can identify that aspect of your personality that makes you feel unhappy, that makes you think that life is dreary if you can identify and remove it, then you can start rebuilding relationships, situations, connections, jobs, and whatever that brings you joy and that help you feel more connected to who you are.

Also read, Comfort Will Ruin Your Life.

Sometimes you are going to get rid of toxic people to redefine yourself and know who you are today. The beauty of that is that you also get to make new friends and new relationships with people who know you for who you are now and not for who you were.

We usually avoid hard times whenever we can, but I try to do something hard every single day.

In this post, I'll explain why I've chosen this approach. By the end, perhaps you will be inspired to do the same.

It all starts with the COMFORT ZONE. Everyone has a comfort zone, and we like being in it. Usually, it looks like something like this: Going to school or a job where we do what is required of us to get by, but not necessarily more than that, spending weekends hanging out with the same people we've always socialized with, holding on to the same beliefs we've had for years and failing to consider different opinions. It means taking the path of least resistance.

Life becomes a predictable routine, with no real challenges and we find ourselves stagnating. It's easy to understand why the majority of people stay here for most of their lives. As the name implies, it's comfortable here since we're not pushing ourselves. At the first glance, there seems to be nothing wrong with that. Why would we voluntarily put ourselves in a position of struggle, if we don't have to? If we only live our lives in our comfort zone, we might unknowingly do ourselves an injustice.

You see, while our comfort zone is indeed comfortable, it also has one big downside. People who are stuck here for too long, don't just stagnate but they often regress backward as well. When you're doing the same things, the same way over and over, the comfort zone itself begins to shrink. The things you are comfortable with before, are now less comfortable. Let me give you an example.

Someone who is socially, and is afraid of social interaction, usually doesn't like the idea of meeting new people. Experiencing that is outside their comfort zone. So, instead, they prefer to spend their time alone, or if they do socialize, it's with people they already know well and that's fine. Let's say this person starts spending less time with their current friends and even more time alone. Slowly, their current comfort zone will become smaller because they don't confront their fear. The fear becomes even bigger and even the idea of calling up their current friend group becomes more difficult. You can see how paradoxically, giving in to current comfort can lead to future discomfort.

Also read, 10 Things You Must Improve Daily.

When a muscle isn't used for a longer period, it wears out (atrophies) and gets smaller because there is no reason for it to stay big. The same happens when we don't challenge ourselves. We become less capable of handling the obstacles that life throws at us. That is the first reason why I try to do something difficult every day. I don't want to stagnate, and I don't want the things that I'm comfortable with now to become uncomfortable in the future.

However, when we push ourselves and do something a little more challenging for us, we leave our comfort zone. Then we enter the GROWTH ZONE. This is where we struggle and we might feel incompetent but this is exactly where all real progress is made. Probably, you have noticed it yourself. For example, when working out at a gym, you don't improve if you simply lift the same weight every time. When learning a new language, you're not advancing if you only practice what you already know. To improve and see progress, you have to leave your comfort zone and increase the challenge.

That means, increasing the weights on your lifts, or reading something new and trying to recall the information without help. Yes, you will be uncomfortable, you will struggle. There's no improvement without challenge.

BEST SELF - Download now

It's completely fine to stop progressing in some areas if you're happy with where you are. There's no need to push yourself at everything you do. But if you are not happy with where you are, there are a few ways to go from comfort to growth. You probably already have a certain area in mind where you're stuck and want to improve. There are three ways you can go about it:

The first way is by doing it more constantly.

The second way is by doing it more intensely

The third way is by doing it for longer periods.

All three of them will increase the difficulty of whatever you want to improve on. I think they are mostly self-explanatory.

There is a third zone. If someone were to push themselves too far out of their comfort zone, they might just pass the growth zone and go straight into the DANGER ZONE. This is where we feel uncomfortable in the first place. There is such a thing as pushing yourself too far. After all, if you exercise too much, you might suffer an injury. If you work too much, you might experience burnout. Discomfort is a very useful alarm, preventing you from getting hurt, as such an injury would likely set you further back.

So, it makes perfect sense why most people stay in their comfort zone. They want to avoid the danger zone at all costs.

How do we make getting out of our comfort zone easier, so we can operate in the growth zone, but at the same time, avoid the danger zone? Positive change requires moving beyond our comfort zone, yes. However, nowhere does it say all has to be done at once. A far more effective method is to go about it gradually in small and manageable increments.

Also read, 10 Things You Must Improve Daily.

Another benefit that comes from doing it gradually is that you create a positive feedback loop. Since you're able to do what you set out to do, you give yourself evidence that you can indeed improve and change. This proof of progress, even if it's small, makes you feel really good and more confident in your abilities. This in turn fuels persistence to push through more challenges further down the path.

The point of this post isn't to over-exert yourself until you can't go further. Rather, I'm trying to convince you to find a worthy challenge in hopes of bettering yourself at things you care about. Unfortunately, a lot of people give up at the first taste of failure or discomfort and they never see what they are capable of. If you never push yourself to the limit, how can you know where your limit is?

Only those who constantly push past their comfort zones and embrace the struggle can reach their true potential.

If you show that to people, they will know a lot more inside you and what is to come.

Expertise:

Preparation:

The ability to constantly prepare ourselves for the things that lie ahead will help us achieve the success we desire. If we don't prepare for things to come, we will miss many opportunities. Look for the things that make you a better person.

Self Reliance:

Be independent and make sure you can be responsible for anything that comes your way. Be the person who can rely on yourself when it matters most and don't make excuses for things to go wrong around you.

Image:

If you are viewed as the person in control who can be a great leader and use your power to help others, you will want to help in return. Also, be aware that your self-image is important to you too, as the way we act and think affects how well we can accomplish tasks and achieve goals. Be the best you can.

Character:

When we show we have the character to do the right thing and stick to our goals, rather than try for a while and then give up, we become people of integrity. We can grow and show that nothing is impossible, which leads to more growth and personal success. If we take care of those around us, they will stay in our journey forever.

Self Discipline:

Never slack off and stick to your tasks. Be regimented in the jobs you have, and the tasks you set so you can be reliable to those around you. Do your part, to bring the whole of a project or business together.

Performance:

Demand excellence from yourself. To obtain the great things that you want, you must do the great things that go along with it to make it complete. Make sure you get the very best and settle for nothing other than absolute excellence.

Don't forget to share, motivate, and inspire other people.
