🚗💦 WATER PUMP OR WATER CAN — DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?
A lot of car owners confuse these two, but they have completely different jobs!
The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. When it starts failing, you may notice overheating, coolant leakage, unusual noise around the pump, or your temperature gauge rising higher than normal.
The water can, also known as the coolant reservoir or expansion tank, stores excess coolant and allows the cooling system to expand and contract as the temperature changes.
So, how do you know when they are failing?
🔧 WATER PUMP FAILURE:
Overheating, coolant leaks, unusual bearing or grinding noises, or a damaged pump pulley can be warning signs.
🔧 WATER CAN FAILURE:
Cracks, coolant leaks, a broken cap or coolant constantly disappearing can indicate that the reservoir needs attention.
Now, should you repair or replace them?
For a worn-out or leaking water pump, replacement is usually the better option. A seriously damaged pump should not be trusted with a temporary repair because it can leave your engine overheating.
For the water can, if it is cracked, badly damaged or leaking, replacement is usually the best solution.
And please don’t wait until your car overheats before checking your cooling system! 🚨
Always get the problem properly diagnosed first so you don’t spend money replacing the wrong part.
