π THE VILLAGE WITHOUT SHADOWS
Episode 18: The Price of Freedom
The villagers stood in silence.
The ancient shrine was gone.
In its place stood a circle of young green trees glowing softly under the moonlight.
Amara looked around.
"The curse is over."
But the Guardian shook her head.
"Not yet."
Suddenly, the ground beneath the village trembled.
BOOM!
Kelechi grabbed Amara's hand.
"What is happening?"
A deep voice rose from beneath the earth.
"You broke the ancient law..."
The villagers began to panic.
Elder Nwafor looked at Amara.
"What law?"
The Guardian answered:
"The law that binds the living to the dead."
The ground cracked open.
Dark mist began pouring from beneath it.
Nneka stepped backward.
"No..."
Amara looked at her.
"What is it?"
Nneka's face was filled with fear.
"The shadows that were stolen over the years."
Hundreds of dark shadows rose from the earth.
They belonged to people who had died long ago.
The shadows moved through the village like lost souls, searching for something.
Then they all stopped.
And turned toward Amara.
Her mother appeared beside her.
"My child..."
Amara reached for her.
"Mama, what's happening?"
Her mother looked toward the dark shadows.
"They are not here to hurt you."
"Then what do they want?"
Her mother pointed toward the forest.
"They want to go home."
Amara looked toward the dark forest.
Suddenly, hundreds of tiny lights appeared between the trees.
A hidden path had opened.
The Guardian spoke:
"Take them home, and the curse will finally end."
Amara took a deep breath.
She stepped toward the forest.
Kelechi followed.
Nneka followed them.
But Elder Nwafor remained behind.
Amara turned.
"Elder, aren't you coming?"
He shook his head.
"I have one last thing to do."
He walked toward the village square.
And for the first time...
He removed his old staff.
Then placed it on the ground.
"The truth must be told."
To be continued...
