Traditionally, if someone died and the family couldn't afford a proper burial, they will bury their loved one and plan a bigger celebration later, maybe even years later, when their children had grown and could contribute/afford a proper burial.
But nowadays, it's become common for families to create WhatsApp groups and start soliciting donations from friends, acquaintances, and even strangers to cover burial costs. And it's not just about asking for help, sometimes people are added to these groups without being asked or informed, expecting them to contribute. You are already struggling with bills and this just adds to the stress.
Is this a sign of changing times or a loss of cultural values? Shouldn't we respect people's boundaries and financial situations?
So, if you find yourself in this situation, what do you do? Do you exit the group and avoid the drama, or do you stay and contribute even if you can't afford it? Or do you speak up and address the issue? What's the best way to handle it?
