PUBLIC ADVISORY: EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN PURCHASING USED FOREIGN SOLAR PANELS
As the demand for solar energy continues to rise across Nigeria, many individuals and businesses are turning to the purchase of used foreign solar panels as a cost-saving option. While this may appear economical at first, buyers are strongly advised to exercise caution before making such an investment.
It is important to understand that solar panels naturally lose efficiency over time. On average, a solar panel degrades by approximately 0.5% to 1% each year, meaning older panels may no longer deliver the performance required for reliable power generation.
Before purchasing any used solar panel, ensure it is thoroughly inspected for the following:
Microcracks in the glass surface, which may not be immediately visible but can significantly reduce energy output.
Hotspot discoloration, an indication of overheating and damaged solar cells.
Delamination or air bubbles, showing that the protective layers have begun to separate, allowing moisture to pe*****te.
The condition of the junction box, ensuring it is intact, properly sealed, and free from defects.
Damaged, bent, or weakened frames, which can compromise the panel's structural integrity.
Corroded connectors and electrical terminals, which may lead to poor performance, electrical faults, and potential safety hazards.
Remember, a low purchase price does not always represent good value. Buying substandard or heavily degraded solar panels simply because they are cheap may result in repeated maintenance costs, poor energy production, premature replacement, and greater financial losses in the long run.
As the saying goes, "Buy cheap today, pay dearly tomorrow." Invest wisely by insisting on proper testing, professional inspection, and quality assurance before purchasing any used solar panels.
