It all started in 2015,

What happened? My entire perception to piano music changed.

Who did I meet? Supreme Etang, the piano guru and a product of music department, University of Uyo, Uyo. I spent 7 days in his house, then at udoette street, and those days where deeply transforming for me. Supreme Etang revealed 7 mystics in piano music that contributed 65% to my growth in piano music, I won't fail to share these mystics in my next post here.

Moral lesson: we see far when we see sitting on the shoulders of great minds.

Have you heard of pivoting chords?
Let me take out few seconds to brief you on them.
They are supporting chords (though mostly passing chords), and are useful for supporting chordal transition i.e progression. They are the reason you hear professional musicians sound amazing and play seem complex. It isn't shaaaaa.
Pivoting chords are more often used by the auxiliary pianists though the lead pianist can use them. Surprisingly, these chords can be built by you.
Let me drop some of them but its application will be our next topic for the next post.
E.g (246), (357), (613), (247), (6 #13), etc.

I'm asked this question so many times.
Me : It isn't the quantity of time but quality of time that matters.

Rules for naming chords

1. Omission of m, mi or min implies a major 3rd.

2. Inclusion of a 9th, 11th or 13th in a chord implies existence of a 7th.

3. If the 5th is not there, you should have a b5 or #5.

4. If a 7th is in a chord, then 2, 4 and 6 becomes 9, 11 and 13 respectively.

5. Extended chords like 13 implies the inclusion of 7, 9 and 11.

6. Chord naming communicates theory not voicing.

7. You can use directives such as "add"e.g C(add9), "sus" e.g C(sus4), "omit" e.g C(omit5).

Do you know how to correctly use the pedal?

"Don't use my pedal or any other pedal if you don't know how to CORRECTLY use it", those were the words of Supreme Etang to me during one of our indoor piano lessons, and I'm re-echoing these same words to you.

A grand piano has 3 functional pedal: sustain pedal(right), soft pedal(left) and suspend pedal(middle).
For today let consider the sustain pedal, it's what you and I know much about.
The sustain pedal works in two ways:
1. Depressing, and
2. Releasing
To correctly use a sustain pedal, play the note or chord you wish to sustain then catch up with it with the pedal, that's the basic.
Please don't put your feet on the pedal as if it's your foot rest mat🤣🤣🤣
