I could barely recognize him because the man I saw was quite different from the one I knew in the past 2 years, he used to be a heavy built and tall man who had this signature subtle smile whenever we use to meet, but today I was shocked and speechless due to the fact that the once heavily built man was now looking like a model for a slimming tea production company or better still a weight loss supplement manufacturing company

I was so curious to know why he became a shadow of his former self because I had privy knowledge about how much the organization he was working for was paying him. Of course I had once consulted for that company and to be fair the pay over there and the treatment of employees welfare was not bad. After we had exchanged pleasantries I asked him about his family and how he was faring

He broke a not too pleasing news to me by telling me that he was sacked from the company and that since then life has been hell for him. Although I didn’t really know much about his career capabilities as a sales representative but in the short time I consulted for the company I knew him as one who was always so punctual to his duty post. I asked him about his closest friend who was also his colleague in the company, he told me that they had promoted the colleague and also increased his pay

I was forced to ask about the reason he was laid off and he told me that the company had consistently complained about him not meeting his sales target and ended by saying that he gave all his best to the company while insisting that there was nothing he could do. My mind flashed back to his former colleague whom he just told me that was rewarded with a promotion and I remembered about how the colleague use to ask me to recommend sales materials, resources and trainings so that he can develop himself

Looking at this young man I felt nothing but pity for him, then quickly asked him about what he did to develop his sales skills while he was still working, he told me that the work volume didn’t even give him time to think of personal self-development. Immediately he gave that answer I knew where his problem began, I told him that self-development must be an intentional and continuous process meaning that any career person who does not involve himself on intentional self-development will surely pay dearly for it.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SALES PROFESSION
There are several misconceptions among the public concerning sales profession, which eventually rob off on our youth in Nigeria. Most youth, times without number claimed that there is no job in the country, meanwhile, millions of our youths are scared of the available sales job.
What are these few misconceptions about sales profession:
1. Sales profession is a tough job
Everyone seems to be struggling with something, no matter how you break it down, something that is hard for somebody is easy for someone else. It is essential to identify what challenges you because that is where you need to focus your efforts. Awkward moments happen to everyone. You must also realize that if you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough. Today, most graduates are hesitant to start their career in sales because of the negative perceptions about sales profession.

2. Selling is all about talking
It is true that customers want your help, but they want your ears first. Good listeners make a lot more money than good talkers. Not listening is an occupational hazard for salespeople and curbing the urge to talk is a sales behavior worth spending time on to master. It must be noted here that there is a lot more to listening than just keeping your mouth closed.

3. Effective salespeople are extrovert
Research has shown that being extroverted doesn’t automatically translate into being a good salesperson. It is very rare that people are 100 percent extroverted or introverted. Most people fall somewhere in the middle, and display a mix of introverted and extroverted tendencies even if they tend toward one side or the other.

4. Great salespeople are manipulative
Persuasion is not manipulation. Manipulation really means that your intention is merely just to maximize the sale for your own benefit whereas persuasion I sales comes from when you actually do have really good intentions, and that you want to help your prospect.
