Here are key findings from the 2024 Lagos Diesel/Petrol Genset Study, a collaborative initiative between SEforALL and the Lagos State Government.

Lagos households currently run 4.5 million fossil fuel generators, generating an estimated 8.8 GW of capacity and consuming roughly 9 billion litres of fuel annually. The price tag for keeping those home generators running? A staggering ₦1.43 trillion each year.

Across commercial sectors, businesses (MSMEs) in Lagos account for an estimated generator capacity of 10.4 GW. Across households, commercial entities, and markets, these generators release roughly 39 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) per year.

Here are some interesting findings from the 2022 Lagos Diesel/Petrol Genset Study, a landmark collaborative initiative between SEforALL and the Lagos State Government.

Lagos households currently run 4.5 million fossil fuel generators, generating an estimated 4GW of capacity and burning through 9 billion litres of fuel every year. The price tag for keeping those generators running? A staggering ₦1.43 trillion annually.

When you combine that with the 61GW of estimated generator capacity powering local industries, the true scale of off grid fuel reliance in Lagos becomes clear.

What will it take to move Lagos closer to 24/7 power?

That was the question at the centre of the Lagos State Electricity Market Town Hall Meeting, chaired by His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, also in attendance.

The meeting brought together key players across the electricity ecosystem, including Lagos State, Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Lagos Independent System Operator (LAISO), Lagos State Electricity Market Authority (LSEA), Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources TRANSMISSION COMPANY OF NIG. Nigerian Independent System Operator Gas Aggregator Company Nigeria Ltd/Gte Eko Electricity Distribution DisCo Ikeja Electric Plc, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Africa Finance Corporation, alongside other government, industry and private sector stakeholders.

The conversation reflected the scale of what Lagos is working towards. Building a reliable 24/7 power economy requires more than additional generation. It requires the infrastructure, market structures, investment and coordination needed to connect the different parts of the electricity value chain and make the system work more effectively.

Vista Advisory Founder, Habeeb Alebiosu, CEO of Decentralised Energy was part of the conversation, engaging with stakeholders across the power ecosystem on the opportunities and challenges shaping Lagos’ electricity market.

The direction is clear: building a stronger electricity market for Lagos will require stakeholders across the value chain to keep working together to unlock investment, strengthen infrastructure and deliver reliable power for the people and businesses that drive the state.

We were at the official launch of the Lagos Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR).

Hosted by LASEPA in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. The event brought together stakeholders committed to improving emissions reporting and advancing climate action through digital MRV systems.
