MOST ASKED QUESTIONS BY BEGINNERS IN FISH FARMING (VOLUME 2)
We published Volume 1 of the most asked questions by beginners in aquaculture, and it generated a lot of engagement, with more farmers asking for additional guidance. So, we decided to release Volume 2 to help answer more of your critical questions. Aquaculture is a field of non-stop learning. To survive and graduate from "beginner" status, you must confront the next set of costly mistakes. Stop hoping for luck and get serious with learning the professional answers to the questions you're still asking wrong.

QUESTION 1. Should I use a borehole, river, or tap water for my farm?

The Professional Answer: It depends entirely on the water's chemical profile. The source doesn't matter as much as its content. Borehole water is often best because it's stable and pathogen-free, but it can be too acidic or have high levels of dissolved iron that must be aerated out. River/stream water is high in natural nutrients but carries massive risks of pollution, parasites, and disease. Tap water (if treated) is safe but can contain trace levels of chlorine that must be removed before stocking fish. Your mandate is to test the source water, not just assume its quality.

QUESTION 2. How do I stop my fish from getting sick and needing antibiotics?

The Professional Answer: The most affordable way to stop your fish from getting sick is by mastering prevention (Biosecurity) methods, not by buying expensive treatments. Most disease outbreaks in amateur farms are secondary infections that can easily be prevented (meaning they were caused by high stress from poor water quality, like Ammonia or low D.O., or improper handling). If you manage your water rigorously and quarantine all new stock for 5-7 days, you eliminate 90% of the reasons your fish get sick. Biosecurity is your cheapest medicine.

QUESTION 3. Is it possible to feed my fish kitchen leftovers or homemade feed?

The Professional Answer: No, not if you want profit. Whi
